Look at the teams that are likely sellers. BAL, DET, KC, OAK, WASH, PIT, CHC, CIN, COL.
Then there are the borderline teams that could sell, but they are still relatively in the hunt, expected to compete with the current roster, or multiple big contracts, and probably just retool a bit and try again next year but not necessarily going to sell. LAA, AZ, CHWS, TEX. I would say LAA should sell, but I don’t see their ownership doing it and still trying to compete with Trout and Ohtani, but pending FA could possibly be sold, but they are going to want major league ready returns I’m sure. The only reason I included CHWS here and not buyers is they have a good starting staff that is controlled and Cueto is a pending FA and selling him, but buying elsewhere could be an option because they aren’t out of it yet.
    9 sellers
    3-4 stuck in the middle
17-18 buyers (depending on where CHWS fall)

The price for anyone is going to be high. The demand is much higher than the supply, especially when you factor those 9 teams are selling for a reason…they aren’t good.

    Marco isn’t any better than any options currently. 5 K/9 3.3 BB/9 5.24 FIP

He’s not “in the news”, but I was looking up some recent former Cardinals stats and Seth Elledge has 25ip 1.80 ERA, 5 H/9, 0 HR, 1.8 BB/9 (always his weakness in STL), 12.6 K/9 for ATL AAA.

McHugh looked like a pitcher a team looking for relief help this past off season should have targeted….

And Edman can’t catch a break tonight. Wasn’t it Matzek that made a play like that last year and turned a double play?

I don’t see Mo blowing up the young talent at all. The only young bats I see moving would be the likes of Baker, Nunez, Gomez. Guys that are clearly blocked and limited defensively. There’s also the guys like Delvin Perez, Julio Rodriguez, Torres who are still on the “prospect list” but their value has clearly fallen off a lot that maybe seems like an overpay but a team willing to take a chance for a pending free agent (ex. Thomas for Lester)

What about Greinke from the Royals?

There’s better options and I think he’s going to be able to chose his destination and it will be Houston.

    Yepez 11.8, DeJong -7.6 = +4.2
    Thor +3.7

And who replaces Yepez on the roster? Especially if they can convince Albert to retire and stay around as a coach or something for the season.

I think I would take a long look at Madison Bumgarner.

I’d take Corbin over Bumgarner. Washington would be more wiling to take a flyer on DeJong too.

Mo’s vision is to be better than the likes of CIN, PIT, CHC, etc. He succeeds darn near every year.

Billy Beane used to say just get into the playoffs and hope for the best, because the playoffs are a “crapshoot” and don’t play out like the 162 game season. Look at Cardinals 2006 World Series title with 83 wins, 2011 with 90 wins and 2nd in the division. Won over 100 games in 04, 05, 2015 and other years with 95, 97 wins and no title to show. So there’s probably a lot to your statement that is true. He’s working with a limited budget and not going to break the bank. So there’s probably a serious thought of “be competitive, be contending for the division, and at least get in as a wild card and let it play out”. They aren’t going to, and can’t spend like LA, LA, NY, NY, Philadelphia, Boston.
It’s frustrating watching the pitching though for sure and knowing with the money for McFarland, Wittgren, VerHagen though could have got at least 1 good reliever and you’d think they could have found the money for another, and frustrating seeing them struggle against other likely playoff teams like Philadelphia and Atlanta and probably Philadelphia again and LA later this week and next.

Yeah Bader is massively underrated and doesn’t get near enough credit. Look around the league at CF play. He gets way too much undeserved hate.

Also Yadi’s bat took years to become respectable. His job was to handle to staff. Difference is Herrera is a bat first catcher.

And wouldn’t Alcantra and Gallen look great in our rotation now. Both traded for Ozuna who was barely adequate on offense and less so on defense.

I’ll agree with most of your post on this past off season pick ups. I wanted Knebel and McHugh. Knebel has had control issues for Philly, but looked good tonight. McHugh has been pretty darn good in the Atlanta pen. I didn’t like what they did with the pitching staff at all for this season and its shown.
When it comes to the Ozuna trade they needed a bat desperately. You can only assume when they talked Yelich Miami wanted prospects the Cardinals wouldn’t talk (probably Flaherty, Hicks, Carlson), so they talked Ozuna instead. The return for Yelich included much more highly touted guys at the time and looking back now the return for Ozuna was much better. I didn’t hate the trade at the time. I didn’t like giving up Gallen, but you have to give to get, and I preferred giving up Gallen to Weaver, Flaherty, or Hicks. I thought Sierra was nothing and he’s proven to be nothing. Castano was low level and didn’t look like much and hasn’t developed into a whole lot, but on the roster. Alcantara is the total wiff and I didn’t see it either. I think the Cardinals saw what I saw and that he was a thrower, not a pitcher, no control, and probably a middle reliever because of it. Good for Alcantara and Miami in developing. And really turning that trade in their favor. You don’t win them all. But the real issue is purposely passing and not spending the cash on proven needed relievers and signing Japan cast offs and guys who’ve consistently struggled hoping all the stars align and lightning is caught in a bottle and it works out.

Wheeler has been good. Cardinals haven’t missed much because Wheeler hasn’t given them much.

Out of curiosity I put this into the baseball trade values thing and even with just DeJong for Corbin and $45.92 million is says the Nationals are getting about a $6 million advantage.
I don’t know. Maybe there’s something here, maybe not. Just looking for a way to add SP without having to include Burleson, Herrera, Donovan, Winn, Graceffo, McGreevy so on and so on.

Alright, going way outside the box here.

DeJong and a low level minor leaguer to Washington for Patrick Corbin and $45.916 million (paid out 8 this year, 15 in 2023, 22.916 in 2024). Cardinals owe DeJong about $3.083 remaining this year, Corbin is owed about 11.708, the $8 about evens it out. Then 2023 DeJong is owed $9.166 and Corbin $24.416, so Washington pays $15 of it to even it out. Then 2024 DeJong has a $12.5 option, but more likely a $3 buy out of 2024 and 2025. Corbin is owed $35.416. Washington pays $22.914 of it, plus the $3 buyout of DeJong and they still save $9.5 and the Cardinals are only on the hook for what is essentially the cost of picking up DeJong’s option. If DeJong does turn it around and they pick up the $12.5 option then again it’s evened out with money.

Corbin hasn’t been the same after 2019, but he’s still only 32, his velocity is still remaining at 92 where it’s been, his ground ball % is still good, and his FIP is 4.73 and xFIP is 4.14 this year, meaning he’s had some bad luck and bad defense behind him. The real concern is the BB% has gone up, but not astounding.

I don’t know that it’s worth it or if they need more, or even makes sense at all. But it moves DeJong and he’s a veteran who can eat innings and is along the lines of adding Lester and Happ last year. If the Cardinals defense is really #1 in the MLB by the margin its claimed to be it can only help a guy who’s stats show he’s been a victim of a lot of bad luck.

The Cardinals are the favorites for Frankie Montas?

This kinda scares me. I’ve said before I expect the asking price to be similar to Jose Berrios. Which is going to mean Burleson and Graceffo/McGreevy to get him and I don’t know that he’s worth that at all. I’d much rather make smaller traded getting rid of Nootbaar, Woodford, Sosa, and I know it’s not popular opinion to sell low on O’Neill but I’d do it. Actually I said in the off season I would have sold high on him, but that doesn’t matter now.

Yadi was supposed to come back to STL for evaluation and update sometime this week, but that was the last I heard. As for Cabrera, just judging the 40 man roster situation he had to have been on the COVID IL because it doesn’t count against the 40 man and they would have be at 42 if he wasn’t.

Tyler Green had really good range too. Let things play out. It’s ok to look at potential, but you’re talking about a 20 year old AA player who’s at least a year if not 2 away and the big league team has a 27 year old SS doing just fine in Thomas Hyunsu Edman.

Yes they did. Arenado and Yepez were both off balance, but able get the barrel to the ball and sneak them over the wall. But Gorman and Carlson were timed up and launched. Best left handed swing out of Carlson in awhile. Looked real good.
