What kind of person with half a brain hits a wall with his hand? Especially when his living depends on those hands? This was no accident it was sheer stupidity.
Everybody is always ragging on about JMart’s defense, but Ozuna hasn’t been very impressive in that regard lately either. Good thing O has got his bat back.
Minuteman: Yes, I understand the game is changing and I quite agree with you on W-L. Remember when things like complete games and shutouts were considered desirable?
I too am glad to see Martinez in the order these days. I think it’s highly likely he will drive in many more runs with the stick than he will allow with the occasional defensive miscue.
These days we are absolutely drowning in stats, to the point that it’s almost wringing the joy out of the game, obscuring the beauty that is baseball. I know that many of you live and die by these things, and that’s OK. And I know that old fuddy duddies like me are a vanishing breed. But the numbers on the back of a baseball card (do they still have those?) are enough for me. It seems a shame to reduce The Boys of Summer to lines of figures, and despite what many of you believe there are some things that simply can’t be measured.
I also wish somebody would pull the plug on that statcast thing and oblige these broadcasters to give us more real descriptions of stuff on the field that we can’t see on our screens.Amen, Bob Reed. This is the world we live in now. Cheating. No shame.
And the only thing I can say about that Yelich guy: Wish to hell he was playing for us.
I was not real happy with the Cardinals b’cast team (aside from Edmonds whom I really like) until I listened yesterday to the Pirates announcers. It made me a little more appreciative. I would go with Mclaughlin and Edmonds on a regular basis, with just a smattering of McCarver for a dash of nostalgia.
I also think Ozuna could vastly improve his defense if he ran just a little bit harder in the direction of fly balls hit to his neighborhood. Or does he have a problem with his legs as well as his shoulder, which I was led to believe was cured?
I wish I could say that makes me feel better. He sure has ruined my weekend (not to mention a nice outing by Wacha).
Another foot and Jmart would have been a hero.
Ozuna needs to try running. He might catch more balls that way.
It’s very difficult to get a handle on this team from my distance, especially as I’m not able to watch any spring training games, but from what I have been able to glean from the occasional radio broadcast, studying box scores and spring statistics, reading y’all’s thoughts and comments on this forum and various thumbsuckers from elsewhere, I’m just not finding much to make me feel optimistic. I know all the arguments: It’s only spring train training, players are at varying levels of readiness, staff is experimenting with different ideas and combinations, etc., but I just don’t have the feeling we have a playoff team out there. God knows I hope I’m wrong.
I’ve always liked the goofy guy with the big bat. Defensive liabilities notwithstanding, I’m glad we’re going to have him around for the next couple of years.
I understand the game is changing and I do appreciate some of the new analytics to help evaluate performance. But in the process we seem to have lost some of the romance of the baseball we love, the unquantifiable heroics and legends, even the craziness. In the end, I think old farts like me were mostly satisfied with the info we found on the back of a bubble gum card. It’s hard to love a statistic.
