Muñoz gets a run back with a HR. Glad he figured out triples don’t lead to runs! Unfortunately it came just after DeJong was out stealing because he couldn’t maintain the bag on his slide.
Is sliding another one of the fundamentals that has fallen by the wayside? It seems like a lot of guys have trouble maintaining the bag throughout the slide. Or is it just because replay has allowed more scrutiny of the slider’s separation from the bag?
July 21, 2019 at 3:28 pm #98805Hopefully a clean inning from CMart. He has struggled lately.
July 21, 2019 at 3:35 pm #98806Good win. We can’t control what the Cubs do unless we are playing them but if we keep winning series we will be in good shape.
July 21, 2019 at 3:36 pm #98807Martinez issued a two-out walk, but fanned Votto to save the win. Cards take three of four.
July 21, 2019 at 3:36 pm #98808Except for a 12-11 game, pitching has been great since the break.
July 21, 2019 at 3:36 pm #98809Co players of the day are Gallegos and Munoz.
July 21, 2019 at 3:37 pm #98810I suspect DeJong’s slide was worse because he had a bad jump and had to know he was dead. Fortunately for them, they did not need his run.
July 21, 2019 at 3:38 pm #98811Cmart does it again. That is, give me another ulcer.
July 21, 2019 at 3:38 pm #98812Martinez can’t get the clean inning after again getting the first two relatively easy. The walk to Winker was a potential killer, but he nails Votto with the ꓘ. Overall good work.
The loss yesterday was disappointing, but taking 3/4 is a really good weekend.
July 21, 2019 at 3:49 pm #98813That is a series win against a team you should beat 9-10 times.
I agree that winning the division should be the mark but I do not think they’ll do enough on the trade market to make a serious run at it. Need at least one veteran starter, one solid bullpen addition and veteran bat for the infield to make a serious run at it.
July 21, 2019 at 3:53 pm #98814Whiner of the day is Jack Flaherty. He got mad for being pulled in the fifth yet it was he who created that mess. Shildt knows that he has to manage to win if we want to catch the blistering hot Cubs. He doesn’t have the luxury of baby sitting guys who might get their feelings hurt.
July 21, 2019 at 3:57 pm #98815On a good note, the Padres lead the Cubs 2-1 after 7 innings.
July 21, 2019 at 3:59 pm #98818Don’t jinx it Rat.
July 21, 2019 at 4:29 pm #98823Its now 5-1 San Diego in the top of the 9th.
And Arizona leads Milwaukee 4-0 in the 4th.
I am off to the Dubois County Bombers game tonight.

July 21, 2019 at 4:44 pm #98824UPDATE: Brewers have tied the D’Backs 4-4 in the 4th.
Cubs lose to the Padres 5-1.
Cubs now go to San Francisco for a three game series. Giants have been hot, maybe they will do the rest of the NL Central a favor.
July 21, 2019 at 4:54 pm #98826I like your thinking Rats Buddy. I looked yesterday and at the end of next week the Brew Crew and Cubbies start playing each other for 2 consecutive series. One or the others gonna lose. If we’re winning then we will be picking up games. With some good momentum we can really get some breathing room. Congrats to Cardinals for a good series and good pitching.Go Cardinals!
July 21, 2019 at 5:00 pm #98827By the way, did anybody else notice this or did I imagine this?
The Homeplate umpire on Friday night (Carlos Torres) that tossed Suarez and Bell wasn’t around for the games on Saturday and Sunday. At least I don’t think he was.
Whats up with that anyway?
July 21, 2019 at 5:14 pm #98828We are now 2 1/2 games back. It would be nice to whittle that down a little more before the Cubs come to Busch at the end of the month.
July 21, 2019 at 5:32 pm #98830I like your thinking Rats Buddy.
Right on Wooster! Other than Rats’ unhealthy dinner selections, what’s not to like about his thought process….especially when it comes to baseball? Rat and his buddy, Whitey (Not Bolger), are literally two peas in a pod.
This is a series win that you should beat the team 9-10 times.
Maybe if you’re the 1927 Yanks, ’67 Cards or ’75 Redlegs, Booyah. This upstart Reds squad who we just throttled 3-4 games this weekend, is a very respectable group. One wouldn’t be straying too far off base in saying that they may very well be on the precipice of post season play.
Well, I’m about to sit down to an early Sunday dinner, starting out with cold melon, then chicken livers and shallots sauted in butter and flambed in Armagnac, crispy French fries and a green salad with fresh lettuce from our vegetable garden. Hope that inspires these kids to knock the cover off the ball today.
Looks like Munoz was checking in on CardinalinFrance’s post. I know it inspired me to knock the cover off my cupboard. The Esteemed Rat needs to use CardinalinFrance’s dinner entrees as Exhibits A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, J, K, L, M, N, P, Q, R, S, T, U, V, W, X, Y & Z, as to how to eat like a king and living to the ripe old age of 95 in doing so. Speaking of “King”, our good friend from the south of France just may be a real life King? Keep those dinner menus coming, CardinalinFrance!
July 21, 2019 at 8:52 pm #98832Flaherty needs to learn that there’s more to pitching than throwing hard.
July 21, 2019 at 8:55 pm #98833Dubois County Bombers and Owensboro Riverdawgs rained out in the 4th inning of a 5-5 tie tonight.
I thought the gal that came in and sat in front of me might be the one but she had a big rock on her finger.
r/Esteemed Rat <~~~~who is still wondering about his umpire question?
July 21, 2019 at 9:06 pm #98834Box score says Torres was 3B ump Saturday and 2B ump today. I didn’t really notice him either of those games. I did notice Friday that he had a rough game calling balls-strikes.
July 21, 2019 at 10:43 pm #98836
stlcard25ParticipantI didn’t catch the game today, but glad to see the team finish off the series. Keep winning series and good things are bound to come.
July 21, 2019 at 10:52 pm #98838Considering the cubbies have played 9 more games at home vs on the road, that 2 1/2 game lead they have is merely a mirage.
July 22, 2019 at 5:21 am #98839Hitting since the All-Star break. We are 6-3 in this span. BA HR RBI
We have four hitters at better than 200 and are winning! Some key HRs with runners on base have made all the difference. Example, Edman has one hit that generated an RBI, and it got four.316 2 2 Wieters (6 for 19)
188 2 7 Goldschmidt
348 0 1 Wong
176 2 8 DeJong
226 1 4 Edman
378 4 12 O’Neil (14 for 37)
176 0 0 Bader (3 for 17)
118 1 5 Martinez (2 for 17)Molina and Ozuna haven’t played.
200 0 1 Knizner (3 for 15)
182 0 1 Fowler (6 for 33)
200 0 1 Carpenter (3 for 15) -
