I made a post yesterday on the Trade/Acquisition thread about how I laughed at a lot of the posts there. Well I feel it is only fair to give you a chance to laugh at me now. My thought is that the salary structure in the major leagues is way out of wack with reality. Multi-millionaires are spending a lot of their working days on the IL or sitting on the bench with low batting averages. But the sore point is they still get paid regardless of how much or how little they actually do to help/hurt the team.
I would propose a new method of determining salaries for all MLB players. Of course this would never be approved by the union but I bet the owners would jump on it in a New York minute. Here are the bare bones with a lot of the amounts to be filled in:
All players would be paid a Standard Salary – let’s say 1/2 or 3/4 million dollars. Perhaps it could be increased with years service.
Performance pay would determine the rest of a players pay. Dollar amounts (to be determined) would be added for batting average, walks, sacrifices, home runs, singles, doubles, triples, stolen bases, etc. Those would be the ways to increase the salary. Ways to decrease the salary (but never less than the minimum) would be based on errors, strikeouts, pickoffs, etc.
Of course there would need to be a lot more thought given to this type of pay system but the key is for it to be based on performance or lack thereof. The club would still be responsible for many of those things it provides now – travel expenses, food, medical, uniforms and uniform maintenance,etc.
The ultimate purpose of this type system is to encourage the player to perform to the ultimate of his ability at all times. No more multi-millionaires freeloading and no more long term contracts that guarantee money before it it earned.As I said, it’s your turn to laugh but at least give it some consideration. I call it a “Right-to-Earn” system instead of a “Pay-then-Play” system.
It would be a great system, Minuteman3. But of course , any part of it would have 0% chance of ever being implemented. If you could ever have your plan or one where each team would be allowed 2 players to be put on multiyear contracts and all other players on 1 year deals, the quality of play in this league would definitely improve. Of course many other details would have to be included for such a plan to succeed, but yea, it would be great for the game, it’s fans, managers and coaches…..and believe it or not, the players too, as the compensation plan would result in a more diligent, honest, hard working individual.
Great idea. And then maybe we can cut ticket prices down to a third of current prices, knock $8 of the cost of a beer, $5 off burgers, $3 off popcorn, and so on.
Don’t sell it short guys. We just need a MLBFA. That would be the fans’ association/union to collectively bargain on our behalf with all the billionaires, millionaires, and TV execs. TCN posters could be the charter members with MM3 and Pugs serving as inaugural executive director and deputy. Better baseball that’s affordable for all, it’s a big win for the common fan.
In all seriousness, I’ve wondered if there is even a remote possibility for some type of orchestrated/organized approach making fans more rational in their spending choices in order to better serve their own interests. But then, I guess they wouldn’t be fan(atic)s.
I like your thinking MM3. But it would be a devil of a job to devise a fair system that would actually work, and players lack control over many aspects of their game (when, where, how often they play, against right/left handers, when they sit, when they bunt, etc.). But like you I get frustrated with these guys who continue to rake in millions whether they earn it or not.
So often I think of Stan the Man who had to play 18 years before he made $100,000 – and that on a one-year contract.

“Deputy”….sweet! But only if MM3 gives me more than one bullet, Euro. You know, speaking of “bullets”, I used to love that as a nickname when I was a kid…..the Washington Bullets. No way society pulls the trigger on reviving that name these days.
Pugs, I’m sure MM3 will entrust you with the keys to the entire MLBFA ammunition depot. Big bullets and all. You’ll need them for bargaining leverage.
I remember the Washington Bullets. Dandridge, Unseld and Hayes for the championship. This also reminds me of the Colt 45s, who in their current incarnation are determined to win another championship of their own.

And your deputy will need that “full arsenal” if we have any hopes of righting MLB’s floundering salary structure ship, MM3. As most know, the great State of Wisconsin is arguably this nation’s deer hunting capitol. Many friends have attempted to have me go deer hunting with them over the years, but I have yet to venture into the woods. And I am not going until they allow automatic weapons (machine guns, Uzi’s etc) for the hunt. I’d feel naked going out there with only a shotgun or 30 ot 6 rifle (sic). Just as in baseball, a man needs a full clip to succeed.
