I don`t like this move at all. 14 million and losing high draft pick.Stupid move in my opinion.

I think its too early to give up on Norris. He has been a effective MAJOR LEAGUE pitcher as recently as last season. That is something Mike Mayers has not remotely come close to being.mayers has been basically a batting practice pitcher when he pitches in the BIGs.

Like Brian says in his article-Valera could be on the 40-man bubble.

I think its pretty obvious that the Cards FO/Management has decided on the model they will use.Internal Player development with some smart trades added in and a complimentaryy Free agent signing or two .As for the Cubs being smarter (Theo) i dont buy that line of thinking.I am still waiting for people to convince me that THEO is a genius.(When has he built anything without the benefit of a big wallet behind him?As for Cubbies having a period of contending the odds are that after sucking for many years you ought to get lucky sometimes.Tanking didn`t hurt either. After all those top picks they finally got lucky and big checkbook helped also.
I see nothing wrongwith being a steady yearly contender by going the route the Cards are going. It might not be cool or sexy enough for many instant gratification fans (younger) but i prefer a team being in contention yearly instead of boom or bust.I remember too many poor Cards teams from the 70s and how the Cards teams fell badly after 1964 WS (1965) rebounded in 67-68 and then barely sniffed contention in the 70s.

Did the Cards makes offers to Nicasio and Reed? I think so.You cant force the players to sign the deals offered can you?Stanton is the one who didnt want to come to Stlouis or did you forget that.Cards offered best deal to miami but Stanton nixed coming to Cardinals. You can`t blame FO for that.
Cards DID MAKE THE OZUNA TRADE improving the offense.Cards did sign a extra starting pitcher (Mikolas who several teams wanted including the freaking Cubwads) .Cards did sign Norris and Gregorson 2 guys who have closing experience and Norris was good last season until injured and a couple of bad outings skewed his stats.Cards did trade Grichuk for a young bullpen guy who is coming into his own(Leone.Grichuk was going to be a 4th OF and spot starter.Cards did trade Piscotty for 2 good young INF prospects (Munoz and Schrock).Cards also got Tyler ONeill for Marco Gonzalez who was not going to do much in STLOuis ( ONeill is a top 100 prospect in MLB).

It should be obvious to everyone that the management/FO has a certain way they are going to do business and they are sticking to that style.Choosing to develop players internally instead of handing out big dollar Free agent contracts like popcorn.Cards use their metrics to choose who to sign when they do sign someone and putting the emphasis on player development in the farm system seems to be the way it will be.The results have not been bad no matter what the gloom and doom bunch rants daily. As a long time fan (over 50 years) i would love to have a All-star studded lineup of big name players but the reality is that this is not NY or LA or Boston etc;.Cards choose to use the farm system development augmented with a few complimentary FA signings and trades to keep the team in contention every year.I dont see how anyone can complain about having a team that is in contention yearly.THis is not sexy or fancy and doesnt get the big headlines but it seems to be working because the team is in contention for the playoffs every year.I won`t knock that.

If this team of”verage” players bothers you so much why not find another team with more “not average” players to root for.

    Dejong`s contract per Cots Contracts

    2018 1.0 million with a 1 million signing bonus
    2019 1.5 million
    2020 1.5 million
    2021 4.0 million
    2022 6.0 million
    2023 9.0 million
    2024 12.5 million with a 2.0 million buyout
    2025 15.0 million with a 1.0 million buyout

Cards are basically getting the next 6 years of DeJong for only THREE million more than Wainwright is making this season.
So how is this in any way shape or form a bad deal?

I just think some people would not be satisfied until Clayton Kershaw and Brian Harper and manny Machado walk in the door and sign with the Cards. Then some people would complain Cards paid too much.

Since he does play a position that the Cards are not well stocked in (actually 2 positions SS-3B) and can adequately play 2b and is young 24 ,hits with power and plays average to above average defense …whats not to like..except just complaining because the FO thinks he can be a building block for years. This extension makes a hell of a lot more sense than Molinas IMHO.So Cards paying him more now instead of paying more when arbitration comes up.Geez Jager..Cards sign a homegrown young talent and you complain? Did you complain Martinez got his extension? Carpenter? I just don`t see the issue here. The Cards are called cheap by many fans and yet when the team makes a move to lock in a young rising player people get bent out of shape.IMHO the Cards are saying we will pay you now instead of paying possibly a lot more in arbitration a couple of years down the road.

I just dont see the downside of this deal.He plays a position that the Cads system is lacking in quality starting SS.I think Tommy Edman profiles as a utility type guy.DeJong showed better plate discipline after only walking 1 time in his first 100ABs and he is better than average defensively at SS.His bat is well over average for SS.He is just 24 plays okay defense, hits for power etc; Whats there not to like.

I like the deal.Locked up a guy with a good bat who is still only 24 and plays a premium position that the farm system is not well stocked in.You are paying more now but you will save come arbitration time.Another added benefit is that the Phammites on Cardstalk are raising holy hell because its not Pham.LMAO.The amount of money is not a bankbreaker so why be upset? Cards basically locked up a young guy at a important position and if he moves to 3B when Gyorko leaves 3B is covered.

What does Holliday have to offer anymore? His ability to play defense is beyond below average. He is good for a Homerun everyu now and then. Why take up a roster spot from a younger guy who can pinch hit and play defense? Makes no sense to me.Its one thing the Cards already have-RH batters who play 1B-OF (Jose Martinez,Luke Voit,Rangel Ravelo) and RH hitting OF guys-Adolis Garcia,Tyler ONeill,

Hope he can stay with the organization.Either at AAA or AA and try to get his career back on track. There will always be a need for live arms because of injury or ineffectiveness.

BHC-I might be the “Old man yelling at the clouds” in your words but i like what i like and don`t really give a damn what you think of my opinion.Yes i think Ortiz is a hack POS rabble-rousing turd.

As i said earlier …have there been any incidents of discontent with Norris and his teammates since 2015 when he make the quote? I have read or heard nothing…so IMHO Ortiz is just a hack stirring the ashes trying to get people to read his horseshit column.

So Morris made his comment in 2015 and apologized and has there been any problems because of that since then?
Since I have never read of any problems with Norris and his teammates what was the reason for Ortiz’s comments?Attention whore to get people to read his trash.
