I do wish when we gamble on a guy we would find a way to work in an option on the contract so that if the gamble pays off we reap a little more benefit.
The option on Oh didn’t work out well at all though. We were all probably grateful for it pre-2017 though.
February 13, 2018 at 11:13 am #43773Black Hills Cards-as we say in the Midwest-have a nice day.
February 13, 2018 at 5:16 pm #43806For those who follow uniform number assignments, like me, Norris will get Oh’s old #26. TBD if he ends up with his old closing job as well.
February 13, 2018 at 7:12 pm #43809Still no word on the 40 man roster move? I know it is a minority view and unpopular option but I won’t be surprised if it is Voit. I think.he is the most likely to.pass through waivers and we have 2_ minor league FAs ready to replace him.
February 13, 2018 at 10:48 pm #43811The 40-man move will be disclosed Wednesday.
February 13, 2018 at 11:19 pm #43812Well what’s said is said and what’s done is done. Norris is coming and only his performance will decide if he’s here past July.
February 14, 2018 at 10:05 am #43837Rowan Wick was designated for assignment.
February 14, 2018 at 10:31 am #43839bummer for Wick…maybe he slides through and we can keep him
February 14, 2018 at 10:37 am #43841Not to make fun of Wick, but for some reason this came to mind…
Gotta love Spring Training!
February 14, 2018 at 10:46 am #43847I explain Rowan Wick's slide as an #stlcards prospect and identify the team's options for him going forward. (free) https://t.co/YtR3n4DQBr pic.twitter.com/ZaXxhDgvs5

ParticipantNorris replaces Wick… pretty simple stuff. Wick might still wind up in Memphis, but his career has taken a hit. There’s a 50/50 chance he gets released… the AAA is loaded up also.
Maybe he can try catching again.
February 14, 2018 at 12:58 pm #43863Hope he can stay with the organization.Either at AAA or AA and try to get his career back on track. There will always be a need for live arms because of injury or ineffectiveness.

ParticipantWick is actually ahead of Jason Motte at the same time in their development.
February 14, 2018 at 1:47 pm #43866I think the chance of Wick being released is less than 1%. If he was good enough to stay on the 40-man following last season, why would he suddenly become release-worthy during the same off-season? Makes no sense.
(Please do not tell me that the Cardinals have so many better relief candidates than him at Springfield and Memphis that there is no room. I am not buying that – especially before even one spring training inning has been played.)
February 14, 2018 at 3:52 pm #43868I agree Mr. Walton. He still has a place in the system.
February 14, 2018 at 3:56 pm #4386914NyquisT
ParticipantMr. Walton, re-thinking my comment, I believe you are right.
February 14, 2018 at 4:28 pm #43870Willie Mays Hayes. I hit like Mays, and I run like Hayes.
February 16, 2018 at 2:13 pm #43946Goold reporting on twitter Wick has been claimed off waivers. New team is tba
Rowan Wick has been claimed off waivers. Will be going to a new team. #cardinals

February 16, 2018 at 2:48 pm #43948Yet another Cardinal to those scheming, no-good Padres! 😉
Regarding #stlcards loss of Rowan Wick on waivers, Padres had 7th priority based on 2017 win percentage. So six teams passed. Some quantity of the 22 other organizations may have put in a claim as well.
— Brian Walton (@B_Walton) February 16, 2018
Rowan Wick used his 1st minor league option last season with #stlcards so has up to two more years to stick with the #Padres – as long as they keep him on their 40-man.

February 16, 2018 at 3:24 pm #43953Mo really likes being bent over by the Padres. Awesome waste of resources and assets.
February 16, 2018 at 3:44 pm #43954PadsFS
ParticipantHaha. I bet they would’ve picked up any of the players put on waivers. Mayers’ offseason probably sealed the deal with Wick being chosen. I love that you think Mozeliak somehow wasted resources. How is he wasteful exactly?
February 16, 2018 at 3:51 pm #43955Had the same conversation just now on Twitter with an angry fan.
Why does it matter which team? Wick is gone. My point in noting waiver priority is that it could have been 1 of 22 other teams instead. I don't get the Padres anger. They followed the rules to try to improve. Good for them. Players may get better chance elsewhere. Good for them.
— Brian Walton (@B_Walton) February 16, 2018
Easy to 2nd guess. No way to know how hard #stlcards tried to trade Wick. Most teams would likely pass on giving anything of value. If they wanted him, they'd just wait for him on the waiver wire. And if they didn't get him, so what? He was 40th man on 40-man roster.
— Brian Walton (@B_Walton) February 16, 2018
Correction. 41st man on 40-man roster.
— Brian Walton (@B_Walton) February 16, 2018
Good point. At the end of last season, I might have felt the same way, but Mayers started and pitched well in winter ball. So I think his visibility may be up. Plus Wick has 2 option years and Mayers has just 1 remaining. So more runway.
— Brian Walton (@B_Walton) February 16, 2018
My guess is that whoever #stlcards put on waivers would have been claimed – Wick, Mayers, Gant, Valera… Of course, nothing to stop the claiming org from trying to slip the same player thru waivers later. Back in 2007, #stcards reclaimed OF Cody Haerther from Blue Jays that way.

ParticipantI wish we would’ve gotten Wade Miley. I can’t believe he signed just a MiLB deal with the Brewers. I think he would’ve been a good Blanton/Norris conversion candidate for the bullpen as well as backup starter with LH potential.
That would push Bowman or Brebbia to AAA in the hypothetical roster, but they’d be back given the likelihood of injury, then Miley/Gant/Norris (along with Flaherty could fight for the rotation spot.
February 16, 2018 at 4:12 pm #43958You would also have to free up another 40-man spot at the end of the spring for Miley.
February 16, 2018 at 4:38 pm #43962Kind of a strange coincidence that the Padres have acquired 3 of our players recently for nothing, including a Luis Perdomo twice, once back in the day. You can’t keep everyone. And until the Ozuna trade, to a fault, the Cards were hanging on to all prospects. HOnestly don’t think Wick will make it to the majors, but who knows.
