I am ok with it at 1 year pen and rotation is a question and making pen stronger helps the rotation…
March 29, 2018 at 11:33 am #46687I don`t like this move at all. 14 million and losing high draft pick.Stupid move in my opinion.
March 29, 2018 at 11:54 am #46693Did you think they were going to spend the $14 million elsewhere? Losing pick #59 is far cry from losing a first rounder.
March 29, 2018 at 11:57 am #46694My guess (hope?) is that Holland goes on the 10 day DL, rehabs in Memphis, and gets called up when ready. Gregerson could actually be back first.
However, Lynn was pretty much lights out in 3 innings just a few days after signing. Depends on how ready Holland has kept himself.
March 29, 2018 at 12:01 pm #46695The bigger question than the 25 man roster move is the 40 man roster move required. I only really see Voit as an option. Sosa would be a long shot particularly since there are reports of improved powe in his stroke.
March 29, 2018 at 12:09 pm #46696Losing the draft pick stings a bit but this is a big time move. Getting Holland on a one year deal is a steal considering what it took to get Wade Davis. Also, it sends a signal to the Cubs and to our fan base that we are serious about winning NOW.
March 29, 2018 at 12:18 pm #46698i think Brebbia is an option for being removed too…his ST wasnt great and he did kind of come out of nowhere last year
i dont want to lose him…but vs Sosa and Voit he might be the one to go
nice move…1 yr deal is perfect and the loss of the pick does matter but it is probably worth it to give us more backend assurance…
our pen looks pretty formidable IMO
March 29, 2018 at 12:38 pm #46703Yes he came out of nowhere with 9k/9 and a WHIP of .096. This after a 1.16 ERA in Memphis. He has performed at the big league level way above average (76% by ERA+). Voit performed below major league average last year (OPS+ 8% below). Can’t grasp your reasoning.
March 29, 2018 at 12:47 pm #46706This coupled with the fact Voit offers little to no positional flexibility. If he was a left-handed hitter, this would be a different story.
March 29, 2018 at 12:51 pm #46708Real Simple Cut Norris was stupid to sign him from get go
March 29, 2018 at 12:57 pm #46709Holland has to pass the physical first.

I don’t understand the disinterest in Holland
FINALLY!!!

Participant41 Saves
70 Ks in 57 innings.
3.61 ERA pitching in Colorado…What’s not to like on a 1-year still-in-his-prime deal?
March 29, 2018 at 1:19 pm #46716If KC wasn’t stupid enough to basically give away Martinez to us, Voit would actually have significant value but they did.
March 29, 2018 at 1:31 pm #46718I like the signing fwiw.
Maybe it will even be enough to stop mo from signing yet more people into a bullpen that is in theory about 15 arms deep as-is…

ParticipantRelease Norris add his salary to the cost of getting Holland.
March 29, 2018 at 2:36 pm #46751I dont WANT to let Brebbia go…i am just saying he is another option that we may not think
Lucas seemed destined to be safe too, but he was removed too
Stop putting words in my mouth CC
March 29, 2018 at 4:53 pm #46765Jags, please show me where I put words in your mouth? Everything I said was fact and was not attributed to you nor contradicted anything you said. I added another fact – that I cant grasp your reasoning. It is not personal, If the team waives Brebbia, I will say the same thing – that I dont grasp their reasoning.

ParticipantI couldn’t care less about who’s dropped from the 40-man. They may not even get picked up by another team. Don’t they have 10 days?
So far we’ve lost Lucas (redundant for obvious reasons) and Valera (redundant due to Munoz). Voit can play elsewhere. Is he even that much better of a hitter than Ravelo? Also, if Carpenter or Martinez gets injured, they can just use the other one as the 1B backup, or Gyorko. There is a lot of options here. Plus we have Wisdom that can play 1B. Is Voit better than Wisdom? That much so that you’d really worry about his loss?
March 29, 2018 at 8:32 pm #46774Ravello isn’t on the 40 man roster. Adding him would require another move.
March 29, 2018 at 11:06 pm #46789Wisdom isn’t on the 40-man either, but I don’t think that is the point. They are not needed. Others can fill in.
P.S. I have no idea if Voit will be the roster move, but I agree with those who think he could be a candidate.
March 30, 2018 at 2:27 am #46791This leaves me to wonder if maybe the guys that we were going to use for closer weren’t as good as the team initially said that the were and so the front office had a knee jerk reaction to go and pick up somebody to plug the holes so to speak or if they’d always wanted to sign Holland and just finally did…
March 30, 2018 at 7:53 am #46792I wouldn’t overthink this. Holland’s terms came way down so the Cards jumped in. He is better than any of the relievers they have.
According to Nightengale, Holland turned down a offer from the Rockies that was close to the three years/$52 million they ended up giving Wade Davis instead. Like with Moustakas, Boras misread the market and overplayed his hand. I bet the incentives in Holland’s deal will at least get him over the $15 MM option he turned down and maybe even to the $17.4 MM qualifying offer also rejected so Boras can try to save some face.
For the Cards, it is a one-year deal so they aren’t tied down long-term. He certainly makes the current team stronger. Nothing is going to come without a cost, but to me, the cost seems reasonable.
March 30, 2018 at 8:39 am #46797I am curious when Holland would be available. When I heard the news, I thought maybe he would be in New York Saturday. But after thinking it over, it probably is best for his long term health to give him at least a week, possibly 2 to throw side sessions with Maddux watching.
