Nice article Brian.Obviously DeJong has things to work on and he has improved somewhat on his walk rate. That said that if he stays at SA or moves to 3B her is hoping that whoever is hitting coach next season doesn’t screw up DeJong’s head and mess him up completely.

Agree Jager.DL Wainwright and no shorthanded roster.IMHo it is dumb enough having 13 pitchers and basically a 3 man bench.7 bullpen guys should be more than enough even for matheny.

Danny Jackson was a bad signing.Tino Martinez was a bad signing.Bob Horner was a bad signing.Minnie Minoso was a bad trade. So I don’t consider Leake a bad signing.Fowler was a bad signing IMHO.Way overpaid when cheaper options could have been signed.

Cards got him to be a solid reliable pitcher who could start every 5th day.He is what he is.

Disagree Wagee 12.He was the only pitcher doing anything good earlier this season. He has been rough lately but its not like he has the 1927 NY Yankees hitting behind him.

Leaks has been better than Wainwright most of this season.Leake has definitely hit a rocky streak lately.Damn I hate the BoSox.Cards seem to play like crap in that dump.

14nyquis-I sure hope you are being sarcastic. If the Cards FO even thinks about that trade then they should be fired .

Sosa and Alvarez have been injured or underperforming this year so that could be a reason for them to go unclaimed.Wick would be somewhat of a risk but I would chance him being taken.

If Jager is right and it makes good sense to have another guy so Cards can have more flexibility.Getting MM to use him will be a job.Rosario will probably be the 3rd catcher. What ticks me off is not using the players available who could help you win a game when you have the possible use of a expanded roster.Using the BS excuse of having a crowded bench is just that BS.TLR did that several years and I hated it .Considered it a wasted chance and opportunities lost.

I have several thoughts and I think CC came up with a excellent list.I would like to add a couple of names for consideration .
1.Josh Lucas RHP AAA Memphis 2010 draft-13-16 saves/save chances.3.43 E.R.A. 1.17 WHIP 63 K 55.1 IP-the Cards bullpen needs help so why not protect Lucas or else sign him before season is over and offer a Spring training shot.
2.Rangel Ravelo 1B-25 year old RH batter.Good contact player. Not a Homerun hitter. At least keep him in the system and maybe he could be another RH contect bench bat.Probably a longshot to be added and is probably thought of as a AAA type roster filler by some but on a team full of swing or miss guys he would be different.

    Players who should be given consideration for 40 man and why;
1.Mark Montgomery RHP 27 -fine season in bullpen at AAA.Low WHIP.Over 1 K per inning.Fits a area of need and could replace Mayers.
2.Ryan Sherriff LHP 27-Cards LH bullpen guys have been inconsistent and why not let Sherriff show what he can do?
3.Tyler O1Neill OF 22-he will be added to the roster.I would mind seeing him in September after AAA playoffs.
4.Nick Martini OF-27 LHbatter-Why not another bench bat behind Garcia and Sierra?
5.Patrick Wisdom 3B-1B- 26 h batter-why not ? See if he can be of any help in the future or let him go elsewhere.

Guys who could be taken off 40-man
    1.Wick
    2.Mayers
    3.Sosa
    4.Alvarez
5.maybe Gilmartin -He has had MLB success working out of the bullpen so maybe the Cards use him that way and keep him.

Don’t see Valera coming up until after Memphis playoffs if at all.Cards have Mejia who passed over Valera earlier this year.IMHO the only guys that come up Sept 1 will be some guys who have been up (Weaver and Gant and Diaz and Sierra.I think Valera and Mejia and Mayers and Bader come up after AAA playoffs. As for a 3rd Catcher can’t Greg Garcia catch in a pinch? I thought he caught a inning or two in Spring training to see if he could be a emergency catcher? Please correct me if I am thinking of the wrong player.

Cecil won’t go anywhere. He has had some rough spots but overall he’s been decent. The only Lefty bullpen guy who has been good most of the year is Lyons and he has had a few screw-ups.Matheny tends to leave guys in a batter or two too long.since he is carrying 13 pitchers that is Matheny’s mistake on when to pull a guy.

I have read several opinions by different writers that KC intends to give Qualifying offer to Hosmer and they want to keep him around. As for Moustakas I have read KC is now leaning towards QO for him also.

I am undecided on which way for the Cards to go this offseason-Free agency or trades.Free agency only cost money while trades cost players and/or prospects.Looking at some possible trade targets
Brian Dozuer -Twins contract only thru 2018-Possibly Twins best player -trade doubtful.2018 salary 9 million.
Brandon Bet 1B-LF SF 29 yrs old-due 16 million each season in 2018-2021-LH bat with pop.Younger than Carpenter.Less OBP.Kind of a push with Carpenter.Carpenter would have to go to make this happen IMHO.
Wil Myers 1B SD 2018 salary 2 million 2019 salary 3 million 2020-2022 20 million each season 2023 option 3 million buyout-SD best hitter.Padres would need to get big return with prospects and /or players.Sd needs help pretty much everywhere so this might be a option.

    Freddie Freeman 1B-3B ATL-solid hitter 2018-2019 salaries 21 million 2020-21 salaries 22 million.

    Free agents
Jay Bruce RF -power LH bat could cost 12-16 million a year .he is 31 years old .
JD Martinez Of 31 yrs old Rh power bat probably cost same as Bruce .
Todd Frazier 3B-1B 32-RH power bat having a bit of a down year.Adequate at 3B.Might be had a little cheaper because of down year so far?
Whichever way Cards go it should be obvious a big bat is needed.

IMO Wisdom is not protected.Arturo Reyes ditto and same for Blake Drake.Sherrif is on the fringes…and I think Cards drop Valera and Mayers Mejia also from the 40 man.Lynn and Duke leave thru Free agency. That and some offseason trades give a little room on the roster.I think Gilmartins staus depends on how well he pitches the rest of the year.If he can stay healthy maybe Cards could consider him for the pen and deal one of their other LH bullpen guys (Seigrist).Just throwing some thoughts out there.

Thanks for the reply Brian W.I sure hope O’Neill gets a callup.I am a fan of Grichuk but RG looks lost and seems to have totally lost his confidence right now.Pham has done a good job and Martnez has done fine as a RH bench bat.I see your point about Flaherty but if the season continues sinking down the crapper why not give him a audition with Weaver?Cards need to keep Kelly.Yadi needs to be told he isan`t the manager and to concentrate on playing ball.If he wants to be a social diva then go marry a Kardashian.

This move is another in a series of moves that baffle the mind. How many guys does MM need to sit in the bullpen? This team is offensively challenged ……you have some decent bench bats at AAA .Why not add a contact bat who seems to hit for average with some pop.(Rangel Ravelo 1B RH hitter, good average ,extra base pop, good eye).Nick Martini OF (LH bat ,good average, good eye).I know Sierra will be called up but why not either Martini or Ravelo as bench bats to replace Mayers RP who will join a cast of thousands in the already crowed bullpen.FWIW I would also like to see Tyler O`Neill get a callup ……replacing Valera who is not a real option IMHO.

    Question for Brian;
What are your thoughts about these possible moves concerning 40-man roster and some Memphis players
1.Tyler O’Neill OF-potential power bat could replace Breyvic Valera INF-OF on the roster.O’Neill offers power while Valera offers little besides some versatility and you have said BV lacks big arm for middle defense.BV has been passed over by Mejia anyway it seems.

2.Jack Flaherty RHP to replace Sean Gilmartin LHP injury AAA.Couldn`t Gilmartin be moved to 60 -DL to open a spot for Flaherty.
3.Nick Martini OF or Rangel Ravelo1B -either could replace a Mike Mayers RHP who would just be another guy to sit in a already crowed bullpen with possible callus Gant and Wick and Weaver.Martini could be a LH bench bat with Sierra and/or Ravelo could be a Rh bench bat .Both make good contact which is something Cards need.
4.What about a 3rd Catcher for September?…..Lino or Rosario or neither?

Pham only had several years at each level to finally get his act together.Still he is a career .258 minor league hitter and I seriously doubt he averages 30 points higher in the majors.Freak year..aberration…..somebody had to have a good season since most everyone else is playing under normal standards. If he was doing this at 25 I would be a little more impressed.Phams fans will say he missed all that time due to injury….well you can’t help the team in the trainers room.I don’t dislike him I just am not getting enthused about a 29 year OF.

I have been a fan of the Cardinals for over 50 years and I will express my displeasure about the current team when I feel like it.If that bothers you then simply don’t read my posts.I realize a housecleaning probably won’t happen. It`s too extreme for current management and the management is afraid a housecleaning would cause a loss in revenue. Not everyone has your rosy outlook about this team so continue to enjoy the season your way.I will speak up about my way.

Get rid of Molina,Matheny,Pham,Carpenter,Mabry and Clean house and start over.Molina because he needs to either shut up or retire and go into managing.Pham because he is playing way over his head and is fools gold,Carpenter because he is overpaid underproductive and its time for a change.Mabry and Matheny because MM might have lost the clubhouse and Mabry because the offense stinks.Others who should be on the hot seat are Grichuk -who should get the remaining season to show if he can be productive.Wong who needs to show he can be consistent and justify his contract.Oh who is gone IMHO.Seigrist needs to show he can turn it around.I think Piscotty gets a chance to show e can return to 2016 form.
