Having Reyes and Flaherty, who aren’t even pegged for the rotation yet, is nice insurance.
February 26, 2018 at 10:52 am #44705I dunno…i watched every pitch twice just to try understand what happened and the results are the results…i just agree with what has been said
he couldnt locate his breaking pitches at all, his high fastball wasnt bad, but they sat on the low ones…i thought he had plenty of zip on the fastball though it seems a little flat to me, but without being able to locate his breaking pitches for strikes he was left sitting in hitters counts being forced to throw his fastball over the plate
he doesnt walk guys…and that was evident…which i like…but if he can only get the fastball over without walking then that wont help…
the bite he had on his curve and cutter though were pretty impressive when he got them over the plate
the Fisher HR (which was the backbreaker) if i remember correctly ended on 3 straight fastballs…and any good hitter can time a guy on 3 fastballs in a row…especially when the last one was in the guys wheelhouse
What i loved the most was Maddux talking about talking with Miles…and how Miles knew all the problems without Maddux saying anything…it’s a bad outing…and the first…he gets a long leash from the FO and from me…but i have to say i was impressed with the stuff…maybe he just needs to shake off a little offseason rust to get his control on his breaking pitches back…that K looking to Springer for the first batter was impressive
MAyers was a beast though…very glad he is doing well…and though i am one of the many that would have preferred Wick to still be around…i will be so happy to be proved wrong by a good MAyers helping!
Poncedeleon looked pretty good too…there are worse guys to have at AAA in case of emergency…and it’s a victory no matter what to see him pitching again…great story
February 26, 2018 at 11:39 am #44709One of the PD articles quoted somebody (Mo?) saying Mayers will probably be starting at AAA?
Flaherty
Hudson
Gant
Gomber
MayersNot sure where that puts Helsley. Gant to the pen?

ParticipantI would think that Helsley, Pearce, Ponce, and Herget should be ahead of Mayers on the depth chart. If Mayers does get a spot we are a lot deeper than I thought.
February 26, 2018 at 12:36 pm #44712Mikolas’ success in Japan was real.
We had scouts there scouting him, and so did several other organizations. Those scouts must have recommended signing him. And MO is high on him
February 26, 2018 at 2:57 pm #44716They say the Cubs wanted him over Chatwood. It’s not like we were the only one in on him.
His numbers looked legit. The low walks too
February 26, 2018 at 5:18 pm #44718Rough start but why get excited over early spring training games.Everybody is still working the kinks out and just getting ready for the season. There is still a month or so of ST games to go.
February 27, 2018 at 9:41 am #44729Exactly BW. I do not pay much attention to early Spring games, although it is that time of renewal, and fun to see who might emerge as a dark horse to win a big league job. Then again, that can bite you later on. Sometimes a guy you did not expect to play well has a nice spring, so you make a decision to move another guy, and the spring-phenom becomes a flop.
February 27, 2018 at 10:41 am #44732Shane Robinson, 2013 spring training MVP, begs to differ. 😉
Spring training reminder. In 2013, Shane Robinson had a .435 BA and 1.215 OPS based on 9 doubles and 3 HR in 64 ABs for #stlcards. He drove in 14 and scored 18. 7 BB/7 K, 4-4 in steals. pic.twitter.com/0sGhKCMGuO

February 27, 2018 at 1:11 pm #44736Other side of not-too-high or low #stlcards spring training reminder: Tommy Pham in 2017: .209 BA, .599 OPS with 32% K rate.

February 27, 2018 at 1:42 pm #44738Yeah Shane had a 1.0 WAR that season which is solid for a 4th OFer making the minimum.
