I believe the rangers also DFA’d Garcia and resigned him back after no other team claimed him to add a little context.
My biggest concern is the cardinals scouting of Latin Players, including their own.
Apparently one of the Cardinals assistant hitting coaches took a job as assistant hitting coach at Ole Miss Softball, he came to the Cardinals from Seton Hall where he coached Softball….if that does not sum up the resources spent on this team and staff then I don’t know what does.

This concerns me a little bit, this easily could be that Dewitt is to cheap to eat the remaining year on Marmol’s contract, if he is that cheap I don’t see him paying what is needed thru free agency to get a couple of front of the rotation starting pitchers
Gorman probably brings you the best pitcher back b/c of his power….I would think he will be a 30 HR guy at some point if he hits 240 that is pretty valuable in todays game.
They would be crazy to trade Walker…guy has played the OF for just over a year and is still very young, not to mention he makes very little.
They have a lot to address for this winter….Starting Pitching, Bullpen, Catcher, Offense, coaching and so on.
As bad as the pitching is (and it’s a disaster)….the offense needs help for next year as well
The other question is do you just go into tank mode by resting Arenado and Goldschmidt for a better draft position.
Mikolas is a #5 at this point….great deal signing him to 20 mill plus for the next few years….at some point Dewitt needs to wake up and see the pitching decisions by the Front Office brain trust have been a disaster
Money should not be much of an excuse as coming off the books is Wainwright $18.5 million, Montgomery’s $10 million, Flaherty’s $5.4 million, Stratton’s $1.8 million, Ver Hagens $3 million and Dejong’s $9.1 million….that’s just shy of $50 million (salaries according to Sportrac) and payroll was already down this year to 16th in baseball at $154 million.
OPTION 1
I’D target 2 or 3 of Cobb, Wood, Snell, Montgomery, Nola and maybe a flyer incentive laden deal on Montas if can be shown he is healthy…they probably will need 3 starters minimum.
If Roki Sasaki in Japan is available the cardinals need to be all over that transfer, could potentially solve there problem of a frontline starter.
OPTION 2
They could sign Ohtani and trade Goldschmidt….that would give you an Ace Pitcher and a tremendous 1b when he doesn’t pitch and then you could get more starting pitchers for Goldschmidt in the trade.
The likelihood of Dewitt paying for Ohtani is to say the least very very remote…like it’s not happening.
They will also need at least 2 or 3 relief pitchers minimum; they have been dreadful this year.
That could be worth watching b/c their track record with free agent relievers is spotty at best.In house starting Rotation candidates right now are Mikolas, Matz and McGreevy with a strong end to the season at Memphis…that’s a little scary to say the least…and not for opposing hitters.
Graceffo I’m not sure what to think on him right now.The bullpen in house I would guess is Helsley, Gallegos and then anybody’s guess after that.
Couple of snippets from the Athletic on the Rangers players
Montgomery was one of the best starting pitchers on the trade market, and as a result he netted the Cardinals two very good prospects plus a big-league reliever. Infielder Thomas Saggese has taken a significant step forward at the plate this year with a .314/.380/.514 line for Double-A Frisco as a 21-year-old, already matching his career high in homers.
Saggese alone would be a nice return for two months of Montgomery, but the Cards also got right-hander Tekoah Roby, who was pushing to become the Rangers’ top pitching prospect until he hit the injury list in early June with a shoulder issue. Prior to that, he was 92-96 mph with a plus changeup, 50/55 slider, and a yakker of a curveball that he started throwing way more often than the slider, presumably because it was so effective.

They will need all the arms they can get b/c the bullpen and starting rotation will be needing a complete overhaul next year.
Tepera can go out there and throw an Eephus pitch and I would have more confidence in him than what Cabrera looked like this year….something happened to that guy late last year when Marmol and him got into a dust up on the mound… his confidence never recovered after that so I’m guessing there was a lot more to that incident when they got to the clubhouse.
Cabrera has a great arm, could see him doing well for another team if he can get it all together.
Didn’t see the game …anybody know what Alcantra’s velocity was….wondering if they overused him last year….think his ERA is up to 4.70
I don’t see any McCormick type wild pitchers they took, all of those look fairly reasonable on innings pitched to walks issued, some look pretty good except for Odie and Brandt who threw 30 innings b/w themselves.
For reference….Mark McCormick was a pitcher from Baylor they took in the 1st or 2nd round of the 2005 draft who couldn’t find the strike zone in college and had the same issues in the minors.
Cards 20th round pick Cameron Johnson LHP…is the 42nd ranked prospect on MLB site 6-4 lhp out of IMG, signed with LSU….may be a tough get unless they have the $.
Not sure about there 5th round pick think he was a DH in college mostly, not a big fan of drafting DH’s only unless they can really mash
The Lefthanded pitcher from Fresno State they took in the 8th round has some upside Xian Henderson… good athlete
Matthews threw 156 pitches in complete game in the NCAA tournament for Stanford….think the Stanford coach caught some flack for letting him throw that many….so they may want to be careful this year with him…..he was a reliever his first few years so he hasn’t thrown a ton of innings at least.
The thing with Walker is they haven’t let him play enough games at any position in the minors, he was a 3rd baseman until the middle of last year at AA…if they give him games he should be able to be an OK corner outfielder just on athletic ability….but they need to let him play at least a full season out there.
The Bullpen has been a colossal disaster all year, the bad news they really have no one at AAA that can provide any help.
They will need a serious revamping in the off-season, and there is not a lot of help in the organization.
