Good luck to him. We’ll have to see what Mo got back.

    Who are we getting back?

Horton was talking about they might be young fireballing type pitchers. And he said one of them appeared in the Futures Game.

I sure hope we’ve done our Due Diligence here and we don’t get fleeced for some duds.

Rat, for Hicks its two AA pitchers, one of them a futures game guy. I saw somewhere that one of them will probably go to the Memphis roster.

The #STLCards acquired minor league RHPS Sem Robberse and Adam Kloffenstein from the Toronto Blue Jays in exchange Jordan Hicks.

Robberse, who pitched in the MLB Futures Game earlier this month, is a 21-year-old from Zeist, Netherlands.

Robberse has started 18 games this season for New Hampshire (AA), going 3-5 with a 4.06 ERA in 88.2 innings pitched.

Kloffenstein, 22, is a 6-5, 243-pound right-hander from Magnolia, Texas who was the Blue Jays 3rd round draft choice in 2018.

Kloffenstein has started 17 games for Double-A New Hampshire, going 5-5 with a 3.24 ERA (6th in all of Double-A) in 89.0 innings of work. He’s struck out 105 this season and had one complete game effort.

Robberse and Kloffentstein will be assigned to Triple-A Memphis.

Hicks to Toronto for AA SP Sem Robberse and AA SP Adam Kloffenstein. Robberse was ranked #7 in Toronto’s system. Quick read was that hes from the Netherlands and “self taught”, doesn’t throw real hard and his stats aren’t overly impressive. Kloffenstein has better AA stats this season, but struggled the last 2 after missing the 2020 no minor league season. I believe he’ll need added to the 40 man this off season. From the quick “scouting” I just did on them Kloffenstein has questionable SP, but late inning reliever written all over him.

Montgomery and Stratton to Texas for LHP John King, AA IF Thomas Saggese and AA SP Tekoah Roby. King is on the 40 man and been in AAA this season, parts on 2020-2023 in the big leagues with very unimpressive stats since 2021. Saggese (So-Jay-see) was ranked #14 in Texas system and had good numbers in AA and can play anywhere in the IF. Has spent most of this season at 3B and 2B with the little Acuna, who they also just traded playing SS. He’s a guy I mentioned a few months ago that I liked if they were to make a trade with Texas. Roby ranked #11 in Texas system and is a former 3rd round pick who throws pretty hard.

Seems to me a good haul for Hicks given his past and contract status.

I agree, Bling. If we would have been told we’d get anything of substance for Hicks back in May we’d have all been doing cartwheels. There’s some upside here so hopefully we hit the lotto ticket.

If Hicks is used solely as a 3 out, ninth closer, we might see him in the All Star game next year….pitching in the ninth. I would have liked to see Hicks extended and then used properly rather than trade him.

Between the two trades, looks to me we got good value, but not value for opening day 2014. We’ll see how they fill the Monty/Waino/flaherty spots for April 2024. Bigger chance of at least one veteran down to a single year on his contract?

So far, Mo has acquired one mlb player who is trending the wrong way for seasons, and some suspects. Sorry, prospects.

In a sellers market, the return on our best rental chip (Monty) is underwhelming.

Looks like rebuild trades to me.

You could as easily say depth trades. Being competative next year requires better AAA depth than we had this year. Fixing that seems like a realistic target when offloading the rentals.

Yeah, nothing that helps next year BUT Mo could turn around and use these guys to trade for ML pitching – I guess.

Also, I suppose Montgomery could be resigned after the season and brought back to StL…

It will be interesting to see how Brian ranks these guys within the TCN rankings.

was just coming here to post this. Interesting to see Robberse at 6 or 7 based on what you look at. Also lists Robberse and Kloffenstein at AAA.

I was hoping we could work a deal with Hicks as he has greatly improved over the last six weeks or so. He finally seems to be gaining confidence and command and if the former Redbird can can be dominant as a Bluebird, will make a nice payday for himself this winter.

Hicks was good at certain times. He was good enough to get some decent value back on him. Of course the Cardinals could still resign him but I wouldn’t count on it. If they want to get back to their winning ways, the Cardinals need some new arms in my view anyway.

They will need all the arms they can get b/c the bullpen and starting rotation will be needing a complete overhaul next year.

Before anybody gets too excited, we need to remember that none of these prospects had played their way out of AA yet. Just because we are giving them a free ticket to AAA doesn’t really say much, given the state of our system. They all slot into our top 30 way higher than they did were they came from. It presents them with a challenge and an opportunity. It could be a fast track to the show.

Righty starter Tekoah Roby was ranked #11 in the Texas farm system by MLB Pipeline.

But he was ranked much, much, much higher at Fangraphs — the #64 prospect in all the minors. The #14 pitching prospect in all of baseball. So there’s obviously a pretty (bleeping) wide range of opinions about the guy. Of course, Fangraphs will have to figure out a way to radically devalue him now that he’s in the StL system. I’m sure that by winter they’ll have dropped him out of their top 100.

Saggese strikes out quite a bit but keeps a high average anyway. Some guys can do it, some can’t. At any rate, I’d estimate his 75th percentile outcome would be a cross between Brendan Donovan and Nolan Gorman, i.e., a solidly above average starter at either the hot corner or keystone.

These guys are both 21 in Double-A this year (Roby has been out for two months with an injury, unfortunately) so their upside has likely been underestimated by the scouting community in general. Because that’s how these things tend to work. Scouts of course know the ages of prospects; they just don’t give it enough weight.

Real good haul for two months of Monty, better than we had a right to expect. And the return for Hicks ain’t half bad either. But as others have quite rightly noted, the Birds need a LOT of pitching for 2024 and they got none today from either trade. Well maybe a reliever but who cares. They need starting pitching and bunches of it. Especially if Marmol has ruined Liberatore, as I strongly suspect he has.

Roby has spent a large percentage of his pro career on the IL. 2021 elbow had him out from mid June until the end. 2023 shoulder has had him out from early June to present. Reportedly, it is hoped he will get back on the field yet this year. Based upon that history, I would not even pencil him in at this point.
