Participantgood post bccran. and to top it off they keep Woodford off the roster with a 3.05 era.
Management is doing such a good job. (Not!)
His slider isn’t good enough or his barrel % is too high, or yadayadayada… I guess the days when ERA mattered are gone with this team. They really are shooting themselves in the foot by acting as if the new mathematical metrics are the lone indicator on players.
If a player doesn’t have great metrics but still gets the job done, what’s the difference?Lee
ParticipantHey Brian. Will you & DannyMac address Woodford and his mis-use and possible future.?
Lee
ParticipantPallante … the game is catching up with him..

Ya. Forget about Woodford..July 5, 2022 at 7:54 pm in reply to: 2022 Cardinals MLB Game 83 thread – Tuesday, July 5 at Braves #190203Lee
ParticipantHow can these announcers say pallante is doing ok. It’s 5-1 in 3 innings.
What ..????? UnbelievableLee
ParticipantRight, Cardsfan333. He stuff looked great lasting. Fastball located w/velocity and good breaking pitches.
Lee
ParticipantHicks should stay down in AAA and get more work in. He is certainly not ready to come back to MLB, it will surely cost the team some wins.

ParticipantYou call it garbage time, but its time, nonetheless. He pitched very well his several outings with his velo sitting around 94-95, and his off-speed looks very good. Most of the other pen pitchers really not ready to go it, I think the only other option would have left Naile in for one more, but either way someone had to pitch the 9th. I think management can give him more innings now, as they can claim a victory in sending him down to work on his slider/off-speed, (which he did.), and looks better now. Whatever everyone wants to claim, so be it, just let him contribute more.

ParticipantI think Bob Reed is the smartest person on the forum! Great posts sir.

Participantok jj. pick one then.

ParticipantEveryone has an opinion, and I respectfully disagree with yours. Woodford has shown nothing but promise amid awful conditions from management. Get him in a role that is defined and he can become accustomed to will make a difference for sure. Bouncing someone around like he has been this year is not easy for anyone. The reactions to his treatment are that of a professional baseball player… certainly is doesn’t matter if he is a #3 or a #5 starter. Remember, treat others as you would treat yourself.
Lee
ParticipantCardsfan333. Totally agree with you on your points. It takes a team to win a world series. gscottar may not think having a good mid relief or #5 starter makes any difference, by they are dead wrong. And to go on and compare Woodford to Ryan and DeGrom, really…?
The real reason for this forum is not comparing Woodford to some of the best pitchers in history, but to discuss why he hasn’t been given more opportunities, this year as he has clearly been a better pitcher than several in the pen. And if this debate/forum about Woodford goes on, so be it; there is not time table for a forum to last. If you don’t want to join in, don’t.!Lee
ParticipantWoody, nice job again in the 10th, getting the dbl play ball. Velo at 94… its not as hard as some of the guys, but his delivery hides the ball well so it sneaks up on hitters. Lets hope he gets some opportunities now and continues to do well for the club.

ParticipantWell said Bob Reed. I hope your wrong, and they give Woodford some opportunities. He has pitched well most of the year, outside of 1 or 2 games, but overall has been solid.

ParticipantWoodford is too good to be in aaa
He will be back up very soon! Or dealt somewhere…Lee
ParticipantWoodford looked really good yesterday. I did watch the game and his off speed stuff was great. So he is doing what OM wanted him to. It was a very strange situation that even the game announcers commented on: they had runners on 1st and 2nd, with 1 out, and the 1st baseman was playing up in the grass for some reason..? Of course then a grounder right towards 1st and he can’t get it… unless he is playing in a normal 1st base position off the bag and back, then its probably a double play. Bottom line is Woodford was in command of the game for 6 inngs. just bad defense on 1 play.

ParticipantCan’t make it either.
Lee
Participantcardsfan64m are you going to the day game tomorrow.?
Lee
ParticipantIts really a kick in the rear for the fans and for the guys who are getting older. We all want to get that championship, but will not be done with this guy. STL has the player pieces in place, they just need someone who knows how to use them. You spend all this money on top notch players at 1st and 3rd, then bring on a second rate, inexperienced manager…doesn’t make much sense, does it.???
Lee
Participantbccran. Totally agree with your outlook on the mgr spot. OM should not have been given this job as he obviously was not ready.. he like players do, should be in the minors learning how to manage. This is simply too much for him to handle. The Mets did it right bringing in Skip; he would have this team playing at a much higher level and would have added several wins with better managing. OM, other than he is controlled like a puppet by the puppet masters, he is not a very good mgr..now. he needs time to get better and learn.

ParticipantBccran
This makes total sense!

Maybe Hicks should be in the bullpen, along with Woodford. That would give you Helsley, Gallegos, Cabrera, and Hicks to close games out. Woodford in middle relief.Lee
