I think this is the right move. Piscotty is clearly underperforming. Maybe he can pull it back together down in Memphis. There’s really not much sense in sending Grichuk down again.
The teams that were looking for pitching, weren’t looking for pitching prospects. They were looking for pitchers that would help them win now. The only legitimate trading chips we had were Lynn and Rosenthal. If we had gotten a fair offer for Lynn, he probably would have been traded. And, IMO, a fair offer for Lynn would have been something like what the Yankees got for Chapman last year because Lynn wins games. Rosenthal was getting really good again right before the trade deadline. And since that time, he has been one of the best closers in the game. Its a good thing we held onto him.
If I was sure the next manager would be better than Matheny, I’d say go ahead bring him in. But there’s no guarantee of that. Its not a sure thing at all. The best thing to happen, IMHO, is for MM to turn over a new leaf and start demanding that his players play to the best of their ability. That’s what leadership is about.
Looking good on camera, sounding good in an interview, being a father figure in the clubhouse are fine qualities. But leadership is about bringing out the best in your players and coaches.
Frazier can also play first. This trade makes too much sense to have a chance of ever happening, IMHO.
Disagree. Whatever is going on needs to be pulled out into the open so something can be done about it. If it all stays within the organization, all that’s going to happen, IMO, is that its going to get suppressed and covered over. Hayes and some of the others that work for the organization have already begun that process. If Molina and others don’t like the competition from the rookies, then they should say so. If they think that Matheny is interfering with them personally, then say so.
Just had the thought that Molina might not be bothered at all by the presence of Kelly. Maybe he, and the other players, just want to be treated like professionals, not like children that need nap time and a guardian.
I hope that the media personnel can get to the bottom of this. If somebody can clearly define what’s going on with Molina and other players, then some kind of correction can be made.
It is understandable that established players would not like challengers from the minor leagues, or anywhere else, pushing them. But it sure is something that will bring out the best in all of the players involved which is really what competition is all about.
In a perfect world the players who have already had plenty of fame and fortune would welcome and embrace the younger players seeking their own fame and fortune. And the game and the fans would be better off because of it. Too bad we don’t live in a perfect world. Its sad to see players being guided by their own self-serving interests rather than respect for others and respect for the game.
So here’s some speculation…
The Blue Jays had scouts at Memphis, so we have to think there’s a possible trade for Donaldson in the works…..Cardinals trade Flaherty or Hudson, plus O’Neill and maybe, Gant to the Blue Jays for Donaldson. (No pain no gain.)
Cardinals trade Lynn and Gyorko to the Yankees for Torres and Mateo.
It started raining last night at about 3 AM. There was a gentle rain going on until about 10 AM. Its been overcast all day. Looks like some more clouds are rolling in which could mean more rain. I doubt that the game will be postponed unless its for only an hour or two.
Are you saying that the more prospects we have, the better the chance of finding a future star player? If not, tell me what the you mean by numbers game. I’m not arguing anything. Just wanting to understand.
I don’t want to trade Lynn unless we get a really good prospect back. I would like to see the Nationals make an offer to the Cardinals for Lynn, and others, that would include Robles and Kieboom. I’d rather watch Lynn pitch in St. Louis for the rest of the year if we don’t get an offer something like that. We already have enough good prospects. Get a great prospect or let him stay here and pitch and win games.
Fowler brings valuable intangibles to the team, IMO. He brings the veteran presence that adds balance to all the newbies that are getting tryouts at the major league level. Also, I am under the impression that he brings mellowness, or good nature, or something else that makes the environment in the clubhouse better. His offense is on pace to produce 24 HR with 500 AB although I’m not sure anyone can tell us why that is the case since he’s never hit 24 HR before. I can’t explain why his range in CF seems to be lacking, but all in all, I kind of like watching him play there anyway. I try not to pay too much attention to what a player gets paid because, after all, ‘the inmates are running the asylum’, and that’s something we just have to live with.
I’ve wondered about that myself. I’m guessing that some front office personnel look at rankings, but most don’t. I think they rely almost entirely on their scouts, and on all of the historical data that is available, and finally, on their own eyes and their own senses. If the front office personnel for the Mariners thought O’Neill was as good as the pundits had him ranked, they would not have traded him even up for Marco Gonzales.
If this was a good year for our bullpen, we’d be 6 games out in front of everybody else in our division.
The talent it there. With Cecil added, this should have been the best bullpen in the majors. Nice to see Rosenthal with a save last night. Still haven’t given up on him. He might still be having growing pains. There’s nothing that says a 27 year old kid automatically reaches professional maturity at a certain age. It happens when it happens.Another reason why the St. Louis Cardinals should not take on Stanton with his insane contract and crippling history of injuries.
This team had blown 20 saves this year so far. Only the Phillies and the Brewers have more blown saves. This team commits errors and baserunning mistakes day in and day out. Throwing money, or prospects, at big names is not going to change that. Figure out how to fix what’s broken first. Then, look at trade possibilities and free agent possibilities.
Good question about Tyler Lyons. It might be better to wait until the offseason to shop him, though.
Tyler O’Neill to the Rays for Willy Adames. I would even consider adding, maybe, Anthony Garcia to this trade.
IMO, Carlos Martinez elevated his game when Reyes was on the team last summer. His stuff is so good that it makes other players want to be better. Hope his rehab continues to go well.
I was hoping they could trade Lynn for a shortstop. But there really aren’t any really good defensive shortstops that could be had, as far as I can tell. Even Torres is known more for his bat than his glove.
I imagined that this was a possibility. But it would be shocking to see it actually happen.
I was thinking that if the Marlins want to take his average salary down to no more than 25M/yr, and pay the 10M buyout, the Cardinals’ front office might go for it.
