Im not exactly subtle about it. At least I can mostly articulate decent reasons.

I just hope Fowler’s defense improves.

It wont he’s been downward trending for years. Might stay the same though. he needs to hit a lot more to be valuable in left.

I just hope we arent done whether it is hosmer, donaldson, or whoever. We needed at least three big upgrades before the offseason started. We have gotten one.

The OF is set. It will be Ozuna in LF, Pham in CF, and Fowler in RF. That is a done deal.

If we sign Hosmer the person to be traded will be Gyroko.

Just because that’s what will happen doesnt make it right or even remotely smart.

Trade wong for a long term left fielder who can play defense or a closer and put gyorko at second if thats the case.

    But Fowler isn’t going anywhere.

That’s fine. I didn’t want to sign him but it is a done deal with a full NTC. Carp is the odd man out if sign Hosmer which would be preferable. But Moustakas would work too and then you can Carp but Fowler is here to stay at least for now.

On another thread there was discussion about what it would take to sign Donaldson long term. I’m thinking at a minimum it would be 5 years $125M. That is a big chunk of change for a guy who would be 33 at the time.

Donaldson probably has 2-3 more good years…i dont see the fascination with trying to get him…had it been last year before the trade deadline I would have been happy to deal for him (he woudl have gotten us into the playoffs with his second half)…i’d have been fine (and i was an advocate) with a move invovling propsects for him…but for one year and a compensation pick and HOPES of re-signing him i dont see it…especially when 5yrs is what it will take to keep him i’d think…and at 32 that is crazy IMO

I just ran across a Rick Hummel article from yesterday.

A Major League Baseball source familiar with the Jays said Toronto probably would want two major leaguers — such as a third baseman and a starting pitcher — and a prospect…

They want Reyes. It’s not happening! I would do Gyorko, Flaherty and Grichuk but that’s not what they want.

That’s a massive amount of value for a one year player. The trade market seems totally out of whack lately.

I would send them Gyroko and Wacha. That would free up more payroll for us to make other moves.

gsc, you seem to be in the dark regarding Fowler. What exactly do you want to know about the dude? Talk to noonan, I believe he is an assistant at Excel Sports Management.

I thought noonan was Fowler’s PR guy but I could be mistaken. It is hard to tell.

The Jays and Orioles are both poorly ran organizations in my opinion. They both choose to live in fantasy land and refuse to accept reality. Neither team has any chance to compete against the Yanks and Sox the next couple of years. The rational thing to do would be to move big pieces like Donaldson or Machado to re-tool for the future. Instead both team insist on going down with the ship. Maybe they will at least try to move those players in July although the return will be diminished even more by then.

    1. The Blue Jays are owned by Rogers Communications, who may be selling the team
    2. In 2016 & 2017, they drew more than 3.2 million fans. Up from 1.8 million fans as recently as 2011.

That is called profit maximization. They got there by putting a winning product on the field.

I much prefer that than large market teams like Tampa Bay, Miami and Oakland that continually plead poverty and turning over their rosters to secure their $35 million in competitive balance revenue.

Fowler’s defense per fangraphs, last six years:
    2012: -12 DRS, -13.6 UZR (Coors)
    2013: -4 DRS, -1.9 UZR (Coors)
    2014: -20 DRS, -21.8 UZR (Minute Maid)
    2015: -12 DRS, -1.7 UZR (Wrigley)
    2016: +1 DRS, +1.0 UZR (Wrigley)
    2017: -18 DRS, -5.9 UZR (Busch)

Can you explain how that’s a “downward trend for years”.

    Fowler wRC+ in 2017: 121 (128 in 2016)

A 121 wRC+ would be 9th best in baseball for a LFer last year. Of course, that would be behind Pham and Ozuna too, so Fowler would be 7th best technically. He’s behind Pham (a CFer now), Gonzalez, Ozuna (a RFer now), Bellinger (a 1Bman now), Upton, Davis, Reddick, and Taylor (a CFer now) One of Gonzalez and Reddick will drop off the list too. Although Stanton will likely shift over to LF, so he could potentially be the fifth best hitting LFer in the game.

We have a lot of decent ML-worthy depth pieces to suit the Jays’ needs. If they want to put a winning product on the field, They can upgrade at all three outfield positions – Pearce, Hernandez, Pillar, and Carrera are not good overall. Travis and Tulo (Diaz backing them up) is not optimal with their injury history.

If we traded them Gyorko and Grichuk, that would shore up one OF spot with a decent player that would certainly give them stability. It would fix 3B in the short-term until Guerrero is ready and then Gyorko can shift to 2B in 2019 if Travis stays injured or Bichette doesn’t come up right away or they need him at SS. Or he could play 1B for them when Smoak leaves as an FA. We would almost certainly have to add a pitcher and Dakota Hudson looks like the perfect fit as he is not really needed for our squad and he would give them innings if needed so they aren’t relying on Biagini all year.

If Hudson is “too much” then perhaps Gomber or Helsley would fit the bill. They would save almost $13.0M to spend on a FA to bolster their rotation or outfield even further as well.

Toronto and Baltimore can keep all of their players and fight it out for 3rd place in the AL East or they can come to their senses and try to maximize the value of their assets by retooling for the near future.

It is called reality vs fantasy land.

Reality land is that the Blue Jays were 4th in MLB in attendance last season with over 3.2 million fans. On the other hand, Baltimore was 23rd and Miami was 27th.

Well if attendance figures are the driving force in these decisions, then perhaps the Jays and O’s should be thinking about their 2019 and 2020 attendance figures also.

They can hold onto all of their pending free agents this year, see them sign elsewhere next winter, and not receive anything in return except comp pics, which means a terrible team in 2019 and 2020, which I assume would hurt attendance.

The alternative would be to trade for as many MLB ready level players they can now in hopes of being re-tooled for 2019 and 2020. Either way they are fighting for 3rd place in 2018.

Aren’t the Cubs always among the top of the attendance charts, even when they are losing? Attendance shouldn’t drive decisions to compete in any way, shape, or form.

The ability to put a complete team on the field that can compete should be the driving factor.

The Reds are the perfect example of this. In 2013, with Choo, they still kept their core together and got to 90 wins. They had a young pitching staff and a solid offense so going for it again in 2014 made sense. However, they struggled to just 76 wins and fourth place. Then, in 2015, due to “attendance reasons”, they half-went for it instead of trading valuable assets and were awful anyway, but also cost themselves a year of development and watched their assets decline precipitously (Chapman, Bruce, Frazier, Cueto, and Leake)
