Bikemike, I don’t think 3B is critical but there are concerns about Gyorko. His 2nd half OPS+ was 84 and hasn’t put up a complete year, yet. His 2017 OPS+ was basically the same as 2013 and 2016. I wouldn’t mind trading Wong for another 3bman and moving Gyorko to 2B.

I consider an INF upgrade more important than an OF improvement.

C2016, do you consider the 2017 OF of Pham, Fowler and Piscotty/Grichuk to be better than the 2016 OF of Holliday/Moss, Grichuk/Pham, Piscotty defensively?

Just wanted to mention that if Gyorko gets injured, Munoz at SS and DeJong at 3B might be a better option than Garcia at 3B with DeJong staying at SS.

I can’t see Garcia starting. Or perhaps I am being hopeful.

They’d play Garcia at 3rd and Carpenter at 1st against righties. No way Carpenter can play against lefties now with the season he had last year but Munoz would get a call up one would think and play some if Gyorko would get injured.

That is unless someone like Molina or Kally might play the field. Kelly has been at 3rd before and Molina has played some 1st and I’ve hinted this might be something they want to force on him in his later years.

Someone described Fowler as a “winning component”.

Is this thread still about Machado? It seems like a lot of this discussion could be made on the generic trades thread.

agreed… and with the recent news about the O’s probably pulling him out of a trade and the owner not approving one anyways it seems relatively dead…

though i did just read that the Cubs in their discussion about MAchado had talked about Russell, Almora and Montgomery…not necessarily as a package but those names were talked about…

for us what would the equivalent names be? Wacha? DeJong? BAder?Grichuk?

and they said they wanted 2 young controllable pitchers anyways…seems a non starter…

if they’d take Gomober and Helsley or Fernandez I’d consider it…

Saw an article on msn about that the Cubs offered Russell, Almora Jr, and Montgomery for Machado but the writer of the article views that as not being good enough, after using the words insane offer in the article title…

Orioles beat writer Dan Connolly believes the Orioles talk of taking Machado off the market is only posturing as they hope offers will improve.

Seems more realistic to me, with his key point that the difficult decision was making him available. They have already crossed that bridge.

The Orioles arbitrary “deadline” is meaningless. If someone provides what they are looking for they will deal Machado up until opening day. After that they would probably wait until July.

I worry about the Cubs getting Machado but if the O’s are truly wanting pitching I doubt they are going to get it from the Cubs.

The Cubs trade matched up well with the Orioles. So it appears they want a another top prospect with it that the Cubs don’t want to budge on. Russell or Beckham to 3rd, Montgomery to the rotation and Almora to a starting job in the OF. That’s not a bad starting point.

If the Cubs did offer Russell, Almora Jr and Montgomery for Machado, I am surprised the Orioles did not go for it. Maybe they want another pitcher in the deal, but that is a nice haul. Russell is a guy that I think can be better than he has been. He’s got the tools to really put it together here in the next couple of years. Almora Jr is another guy that will be better as he plays more. Montgomery is solid as well.

Plus there is no guarantee on Machado staying where ever he plays in ’18.

I don’t know if the O’s will trade Machado now or not. They are a weird organization. If they don’t I’m sure he will pursued at the trade deadline in July. I just have a feeling he ends up with the Cubs. They might have to get a third team involved to send pitching to the O’s.

They already blew it with Britton. You would think that would be a wake up call.

Russell could very well out-produce Machado next year. He has very elite potential.

I doubt that Russell puts up bigger numbers than Machado but at $3M vs $16M Russell is certainly the better value.

    Morosi update this afternoon:

Source: #Orioles continue to hear from multiple teams interested in trading for Manny Machado. It does not appear Orioles have a firm deadline on negotiations.

Dan Szymborski of ESPN (insider article) has estimated top free agent contracts for this coming fall.

For Machado, he has two different prices, both for eight years. As a SS, $300 MM. At 3B “only” $264 MM.

    What do you think?

A sweep of the Reds isn’t changing my mind that this team isn’t a true contender. Factor in the AAA team and I 100% think Pham, J. Martinez, Wong, Garcia, Voit, Wacha, Norris, Bowman, and Holland should all be traded by the deadline and totally revamp this team. Would probably even move Kelly at this point too, because hes not going to play before hes 30. Get low level better talent, which is also an organizational weakness.

    Finish out the year with
Carpenter, Bader, Fowler, Ozuna, Gyorko, DeJong, Molina, Schrock/Munoz
    Mejia?, Munoz/Schrock, Garcia/O’Neill, Pena
    Martinez, Wainwright, Weaver, Mikolas, Flaherty
Tuivailala, Cecil, Mayers, Gregerson, Lyons, Leone, Reyes, Hicks
Assuming a few of these guys get back healthy.

Then seriously make a run at Machado. The IF defense has to get better. Machado at SS, DeJong to 3B. The OF log jam has to clear up.
Carpenter, Fowler, Machado, Ozuna, Gyorko, DeJong, Molina, Bader
    Schrock, Munoz, Garcia/O’Neill, Pena/?
    Martinez, Weaver, Reyes, Mikolas, Flaherty
Gant/?, Cecil, Tuivailala, Mayers, Lyons, Gregerson, Leone, Hicks
Not 100% sold on this, especially the bench and pen, but I think it’s a step at making the defense better, clearing out some log jams, and clearing out some redundancy.

I would give Machado at least $30M per year but maybe with an opt out after 3 years. He will only be 26 entering next year. Machado, Ozuna, and JMart is a nice 3-4-5, although it would be good to find a LH bat.
