The Stanton contract has set a new floor for contract length at 13 years. I would think that an offer for less than 13 years would be below the dignity of players like Trout, Harper, and Manny Machado. Neither Boras, nor any of the other elite agents, wouldn’t stand for it.
I’m happy Leake is gone, too. I hope he does better in Seattle than he did here, not because I give a rats ass about Leake, but because I am grateful to the Mariners, and I don’t want to see them suffer the way we did.
Martinez is a pitcher with a million dollar arm, and a 10 cent head. I’m in with those who are tired of his immature behavior. He’s a guy that doesn’t show up half of the time, anyway. I wouldn’t mind trading him as long as we can find an adequate replacement.
It was disheartening to think that Leake was going to be around for 3 more years past this year. It feels like the season is just getting started.
I like it. For me, watching Carpenter play is unexciting, almost boring. Sorry if that offends some people.
I don’t know who the big bat would be at this time. Love to acquire and sign Machado. Next up would be Donaldson, I guess. They have to made available to begin with. Stanton won’t happen unless the Marlins are willing to take $100M back, so rule that out. Any optimism about Machado might come out of the idea that most of the big spenders already have a third baseman. I don’t think we should overpay for Donaldson in terms of players, or in the length of his contract. If the pitching is healthy, and we don’t get blind-sided by a major injury for a change, IMO, there is enough talent on this current roster to win the division. To start with, Matheny needs to take spring training seriously. When somebody says they’re tired, or if they stop producing, try giving them a rest. Not sure Lilliquist is the right guy for the job. He has never shown an ability to pull a rabbit out of a hat, that’s for sure.
Too bad about Rosenthal. If he comes back healthy, he will still be one of the best closers in the game. He’s on the DL, so at least we know he’ll be back next year. I don’t have a clue as to who in the organization has the closer mentality. Not sure Tui has it. I expect Brett Cecil to be much improved next year with an offseason of preparation under his belt. A healthy Wacha and a healthy Siegrist could be a really good closer tandem. Bowman and Brebbia are very good middle men. Either of them might be able to close now and then, but neither has shown an ability to be a reliable closer yet. All in all, IMO, it would make the most sense to give Reyes a chance to close. He has that ‘no fear’ mentality and amazing movement on his pitches, although it would be scary to bring him in with the bases loaded because of his control issues. It seems that the organization does have enough pitching.
I’d like to see Lyons get stretched out as a starter next year. He can spot his fastball, he gets swings and misses with his changeup, his slider slides and mostly stays in the strike zone, and that slurve, or whatever his breaking ball is called, is downright filthy. He has been almost equally effective getting both left-handed and right-handed batters out. IMO, he has earned a chance to go after the big money that starters get.
We still have a chance to win the division this year. Weaver’s performance last night brings back that sense of guarded optimism.
Brian. That piece is a pretty strong cup of coffee. Sure hope DeJong is everything we all want to believe he is.
Kris Bryant’s strikeout rate was 35% his rookie season.

Presently, this team does not have a closer. There is no such thing as ‘closer by committee’. Its possible for a closer to emerge from the rubble of this wreck of a bullpen. But if one doesn’t, I don’t think we have a realistic chance of making the postseason. Rosenthal was great for awhile and the bullpen came together, and became good. Now he’s questionable and the bullpen is a disaster.
I don’t get why Mayers keeps getting the call. He has been ineffective too many times already. I wonder who keeps telling MM to bring Mayers up. Or is MM doing this on his own? Socolovich makes more sense than Mayers. Then, there is Montgomery and Sherriff who have been relieving for years. The more I think about it, the more it makes sense that MM made the call for Mayers because when we see a boneheaded, feckless, irrational move happen, MM is usually the one who is responsible for it.
It sure was nice while he was effective. I want him healthy, and back in the bullpen. Second highest average fastball speed in the majors, and lots of outs, when he’s on his game. All of his fans are pulling for him, for sure.
I agree with you, CC. It doesn’t make sense that he could have so much success without movement and/or change of speed. OTOH, he’s pitching at AA. Also, I can’t find anything that says he has a secondary pitch that he can count on.
I wouldn’t want to give up some of our top prospects without an agreement in place, either. The good news, I guess, is that Machado does not have Bor-ass for an agent, so free agency is not a given. The bad news is that the Cardinals would likely have to pay the asking price that Machado’s agent lays down. There will probably not be much negotiating unless Machado and his agent would rather get a contract done a year earlier than the rest of the 2018 free agent class which is so loaded. Also, almost all of the big spenders are apparently already set at third base including the Yankees who have Torres to play third base for them, and that could give Machado and his agent, Dan Lozano, some motivation to get an agreement in place. Whatever happens, I don’t believe the Cardinals front office will do something that will hurt the organization in the years ahead. You can’t rule out any possibility, until its not.

ah-doh-LEES. I always thought his name was pronounced uh-DOH-lis for some reason. Heard it on FM 101.1 this morning on the Kevin Wheeler Show.I wish someone would talk about the movement on his fastball. Earlier this year I saw a comment that his fastball was coming in straight. Also, does he have a two-seamer? How much improvement on his breaking pitches? He doesn’t have a change up so far, I guess, and its a little late to start developing one especially if his breaking pitches are such a work in progress. No pitcher is going to have success at the major league level unless they have pitches with movement. I’m pretty sure that’s what makes Reyes the top pitching prospect in baseball.
I can’t see the Cardinals giving a 13 year contract for $320M to Machado like the Marlins gave to Stanton. But they might go beyond their comfort level like they did with Heyward. IMO, its arguable that Machado brings more to his game than Stanton does.
If the organization would be willing to take on a contract the size of Stanton’s, I’d rather see them make an aggressive move for Manny Machado. There is no indication that the O’s are going to sign him, so he might be available with the right package of prospects. With Knizner putting up the kinds of numbers that he is, its not too far fetched to consider including the best catching prospect in the minors as part of an offer to the O’s.
I think I would switch Delvin Perez and Adolis Garcia. Maybe add Kramer Robertson as on HM. Regardless, this ranking definitely looks well though out. Nice to see Knizner take such a big jump.
Who wouldn’t love to see Stanton in St. Louis? The problem is that he has a history of injuries, and the last five years of his contract could be devastating to the organization. In fact, the Cardinals might even have to go into re-build mode after Stanton collects his 10 million dollar going away present, and leaves the organization at the age of 38. I’d be willing to bet that any mention of Stanton would be a non-starter in a conversation with either of the DeWitts.
I’d still like to see what Wisdom could do playing 3B. But if we’re in a pennant race, it doesn’t seem likely.
