Good move for the Dodgers – allows them to reset the luxury tax penalty and go all-in for Harper next year (who is the player they preferred over Stanton).
Seems like Cubs will be going after Harper next year, too.

On a related point, Carlos Beltran admitted that Darvish was tipping his pitches in the post-season, perhaps explaining why he was so ineffective.
Clears a space for Acuna in the outfield, gives them pitching for this year which they were going to have to get anyway, and Culberson is controlled for three years.
I’m actually more worried about the Cubs signing Bryce Harper next year than I am about them signing Yu Darvish this year.
With the Dodgers and Yankees finagling to get under the salary cap now, there could be historic bidding next winter.
Historic bidding for some guys. I keep wondering if the guys under the top 3-4 free agents might be better off waiting a year due to the sheer number of high end guys.
Didn’t need to trade Kemp to make space for Acuna. I am not sure either Kazner or McCarthy will be any more than replacement level. Culberson either.
No, they could have just released Kemp. But this clears their books after next year instead of paying Kemp for two years.
Atlanta wasn’t trying to contend this year. Kazmir and McCarthy are just like Colon & Dickey last year. If they get hot, great, they will flip them at the deadline. If they are terrible, just DFA them.
Culberson is a utility player. That’s all he is expected to be in this trade.
@brianpnoonan – I actually expected the market for THIS YEAR’S free agents to be depressed because of next year’s free agent class. So far, that appears not to be the case…
According to this article, the Dodgers still need to shed some payroll, which would give the Cardinals a chance to pick up some relievers.

Mozeliak evidently forgets that he conceded the central to the Cubs the past two years:

I still think we are not much more than a wild card team at this point, but I wouldn’t mortgage the future for one year of Machado or Donaldson.
I would also forget Alex Colome altogether. Dodgers might trade some of their arbitration eligible relievers, can probably trade Grichuk straight up for Barraclough or Streckenrider if the Cardinals eat Grichuk’s salary for 2018 (Miami has three outfielders on their 40 man – Yelich, Sierra and Braxton Lee), and Toronto wants to trade relievers for position players….
I’m not optimistic about a trade with Tampa Bay either. But we might as well play the hand out since we’ve already gone this far. I think Alex Reyes could close even though an experienced closer like Colome would be better. Wacha, or Wainwright, might be able to close, also.
I don’t see where any of Boras’ clients are of much interest to the Cardinals except for Holland. But the Cardinals are not going to give him 4 hrs./50M so there’s really no reason to think about Holland being signed. I doubt if the Cardinals would offer Holland more than two years.

Barraclough (3 years) = ERA: 2.87 WHIP: 1.379 FIP: 2.93 K/9: 12.1 BB/9: 5.5
Pedro Baez (4 years) = ERA: 3.04 WHIP: 1.117 FIP: 3.69 K/9: 9.5 BB/9: 2.8
Rosenthal (6 yeas) = ERA: 2.99 WHIP: 1.305 FIP: 2.6 K/9: 12.0 BB/9: 4.0Baez looks pretty similar to Colome, Barraclough more like Rosenthal
I think Mike (Girsh) and Mo will get a closer and we will never know which of you would have been right.
I wouldn’t mind seeing Reyes used as a closer. At least for 1 season and possibly for as many as 3 or 4 before moving him to the rotation.
I suspect the rest of the Miami roster wants to be traded. Yelich already pretty much said the same thing. Doesn’t mean it will happen, though.
Their two best trade chips in terms of rebuilding the farm are Yelich and Realmuto. They are going to lose 100 games this year no matter what. At this point, the Marlins might as well enter full-blown rebuild.
Two of the three outfielders currently on their 40 man spent the majority/all of last year in AA.
Castro makes the same amount as Gordon, so you know they are going to dump him.
As I expected would happen, the Marlins quickly stuffed Realmuto back in his box.
