Well at least Manfred didn’t cave to some political candidate. That’s all we would need is for politics to get into baseball…………oh wait……they are the ones who passed SAPA aren’t they. And who else will the MiLB owner have to go to other than their local and state politicans. But MLB is putting out some pretty weak arguments when anybody can read what they are really after…..$$$$$$.

That can’t be Springfield, Missouri home of the Cardinals AA team. Lots of Springfields in the US. Care to give us a clue which one?

I received an email of your original post regarding ONeil but it appears you have completely removed that and inserted this instead. But your post on ONeil may be fine but you just didn’t go far enough. The good points are accurate but you forgot to reflect the major negative – Strikeouts. That is the one part of his game that is keeping him on the bench and back to the minors periodically.

Edit: Oh now I see that you just moved the ONeil post to the Outfield Dilemma thread and inserted the one above here. Well I won’t bother to move mine as I thing the idea will be conveyed.

I am in that same boat. When you eliminate the minor league teams you eliminate a lot of fan interest as well as the interest of a lot of youngsters who live at those minor league games – not only the MiLB ones but independent leagues as well. Somewhere I read a comment that MLB just wants to flush a lot of young kids who don’t have a chance at making it. So what? You never know until you try and a lot of today’s stars came through the late rounds of the draft. If they feel it so necessary to cut the number of minor league players, then cut the draft rounds and let the teams conduct workouts to youngsters interested in playing in the minor leagues and who were not drafted.

Good discussion here. I hope we can continue it. Brian, is there any thought that we could get together some sort of petition of TCN readers to send to MLB regarding this topic? Just a thought of how we could not be the silent majority and squeak the wheel a bit.

I just went back and read BHCs 11/20 post again and notice that 3 entire leagues are eliminated and that is 26 of those teams. State College and Johnson City are the Cards teams in two of those leagues. A few other leagues are crippled by losing two or three teams.. The more I read about this the madder I get but, just like politics, there isn’t much I can do other than raise hell with some Congress person or two.

I used to watch a lot of Southern Association games as a kid in New Orleans and I can still name all those teams and their nicknames. Sadly the Chattanooga Lookouts were one of them. The Memphis Chicks live on via the Redbirds. Mobile Bears, Birmingham Barons, New Orleans Pelicans, Atlanta Crackers, Nashville Vols were also in the league. The New Orleans team lost their stadium (which was really a rickety old joint) to motel construction so they moved into the high school foot ball stadium that seated 26,000. Left field was like the Monster at Boston but right field was quite a jaunt but since it was a football field it was probably not more than 350 or so. Thanks for allowing me to remember ‘back in the day.’

Just need to add that the old New Orleans stadium that was torn down was a true ‘knothole’ stadium. There were holes in the outfield fence as big around as your arm and every one had a kid behind it watching the games. I remember seeing a lot of big names there such as Stan Musial and Red Schoendist when the Cards played exhibition games. Also remember the Pirates exhibition game there. Funny how as you get old you can remember 75 years ago but not 75 minutes……LOL

BHC, you and I disagree on a lot of things but I really need to thank you for that long posting of Nov 20 regarding the proposal to cut 42 MiLB teams. Took a lot of work on your part and I for one appreciate it.

Thanks for that link Brian. I have one question regarding this quote from the article:

<Losing the anti-trust exemption leads to some very real-world consequences for Major League Baseball.>

What would be some of the consequences? It seems the anti-trust exemption is what is keeping minor leaguers as nothing more than low paid interns.

<CC posted: MM3 – they could remove them at anytime but they would have to expose them to waivers. If the team was worried that one of these players might be taken in the rule 5 draft then they would certainly be taken on waivers.>

Is a player automatically waivered when taken off a 40 man? I had never heard that before. I remember a couple of years ago when there was a lot of discussion about Patrick Wisdom not being protected for the Rule 5 draft…..FOR TWO YEARS……yet he was never taken but that has nothing to with the main topic we are discussing here.

One question about the Rule 5 draft. I cannot find the answer in any of the descriptions for Rule 5. How long does a player have to stay on the 40 man to avoid the Rule 5 draft? Can the team remove a player from the 40 man who was put there for protection the day after the draft is over? For example, the Cards pick up a free agent in the off season and he needs a 40 man spot. Can they remove one of the guys just put on who was being protected from the Rule 5 draft?

I love how J Martinez is characterized as being practically worthless to the Cardinals. Yeah you can run all your stats by but the guy is still a hitter who hits the ball all over so they can’t really position for any particular place. And in the final Chicago 4 game series he was an absolute key to the wins which if you recall were the key to the Cards winning the division with the Brewers nippng at their heels.

So run him down all you want. In my eyes his fielding was passable about as passable as Ozuna’s who was making multiple times the money. Pinch hitter – yes and he also had his low offense period like all of his teammates but he played a lot better when he batted more than once per game.

So love him or hate him, I’ll take him on my team every day.

What do you think the fans reaction to a strike will be? Rabid fans like us will be less understanding I predict. Hard to defend millionaires playing a kids game who don’t even want to recognize their entry level (minor league) players. Unfortunately the owners have a lot to lose and the players can live on their past millions for a long time. Might be a time for minor leagues to be ‘the show.’

Can somebody give me a good source or link for minor league salary info. I have found several that either differ or dated. For example, I read in one place that players on the 40 man and still in the minors are guaranteed $40k minimum. But other places never mention that. One thing that is clear on practically all sources is that Spring Training for minor league players is unpaid. That is a real croc. Do they get anything in ST such as meals or travel money? Thanks

In a way, Waino has set the path for Molina. Even this years contract ($5 mil + 5 mil incentives) is palatable. Something similar in the 2020 offseason (start in Nov 2020) should be acceptable to Yadi but I agree that his defense is slipping and so should the salary. But, I think Yadi has the smarts to be an excellent coach or manager and should start heading in that direction.

Despite my prediction that Ozuna would take the QO, I am happy he did not and I now hope the Cards do not dicker with him for a new contract. It frees up the cleanup hitter position that he had nailed down for the entire season and, at times, was less than deserving. It may also have saved ONeil from being traded (which I think is still possible). But it clears the way for some cash saving to be put to better use. I’ll be happy to let Mo and company decide where.

So let him go to free agency and then offer him a contract similar to Wainwrights but somewhat more because of more playing time; however, keep the incentives in line too.

At my age I know that I need an interpreter to explain scribbler’s scribbling on stats. Example:

“These questions are well founded, as most of Wong’s expected numbers fell well below his actual numbers. Wong’s .334 wOBA outperformed his .308 xwOBA, which actually hovered right around his career average of .310. His .423 slugging was also well above his .368 xSLG, and his .285 batting average was much better than his .259 xBA. One of the reasons for these disparities is Wong’s average second percentile exit velocity of 83.6 mph and his 7th percentile barrel percentage of 2.5 percent.”

After 80 years wandering this earth I must admit that people have gone stark raving mad to inject this kind of micro-analysis into a sport designed for kids to play. Geeks are now ruling the earth (along with internet trolls)….lol A good day to all. I am still laboring trying to figure out how a WAR is computed and proven.

I would not be surprised to see Wieters sign elsewhere so Knizner is not to be traded – even if Wieters resigns for another year. Yadi – definitely NO two year extension. Treat him the same as Waino – one year, low pay with incentives but incentives for games played end at 80; otherwise, he will once again try hogging everything. Face it, Yadi is pretty beat, especially the hands and the junque has been nabbed more than once. I see him as still being very good at some things and slipping on others (passed balls) but I don’t want a 40 year old catcher (2 year extension) with a almost as old backup. Yadi’s strongest point is his knowledge and that should equate to a coaching position after next season. JMHO

<we were clearly outclassed in the nlcs doesn’t matter about previous history. >

We were beaten badly in the NLCS but I only saw one point proved there. Hot teams at the end of a season tend to stay hot. The Nationals were definitely a hot team but the Cards had taken them 5 of 7 during the season and beat both Sherzer and Stasburg. But the Cards had one ‘hot’ game with the Braves and that proved enough to advance them but the Nats were out of their minds hot. To take the Dodgers, Cards and Astros proved to me that at the end of the season they were the best team in baseball. Shades of 2011 huh?

    <Brian Walton wrote:

Why would the Cardinals organization comment about Edmonds’ marital problems?>

Well he is a paid member of the Cardinals organization and MLB teams seem to comment when any of their employees are involved with something that could affect the image of the ball club. Usually it is the media that won’t let a subject die but in the case of the Cardinals, the PD media seems to think they would suffer if they asked some questions. But, also, some of the charges being mentioned in the Edmonds case go beyond simple marital problems. I would be willing to bet that Edmonds is no longer on the Cardinals staff come Spring Training. FS Midwest – yes, still there because their options are slim as he is the best they have to offer. I don’t support the Cards dumping him as an instructor but just feel that they will do it to ‘protect the image.’

Am I late to the show (again) or has there not been any posts about Jimmy Ballgame and his marital situation? It appears to be a pretty ugly situation. Is Edmonds still a paid Cardinal coach of some sort? I did not see him in the photo of all the uniformed Cards coaches posted by Brian. Usually when something comes up that involves an athlete or former athlete his organization divorces all memory of him. Strange to not have heard anything of this nature from the Cards. Inquiring minds would like to know – any news?

<Off the field, I could have done without his profane tirade after the NLDS.>

Reminds me of the old saying “Lips that touch liquor shall never touch mine.” or maybe “People that live in glass houses should not throw stones.” (referring to myself) This was not a intended hit on any particular poster, just the idea itself.

I find it hard to believe that in this day and age there is this much discussion and apparent shock that a sports manager or participant uses foul language in places not intended for public consumption. Man I do that everytime I watch a Cards baseball game and sometimes forget my grand kids are in the area (they use more than I do).

It is the off season and the baseball writers are going nuts trying to earn paychecks by compiling meaningless lists of their guesses for whatever category of achievement. MLB is full of those daily. Most are just flat out guesses but today one Stat weenie did a hit piece on Marcell Ozuna. Most of his stuff was greek to me because I am not a Sabremetrics person (is that even spelled right). But I could tell he was having his jollies by knocking the guy for years gone past and this past season too. All of this after the Cards had offered MO a QO. For me the non-stat fan, I hope he resigns and has a banner year so he can demand a larger salary in his next contract. But then I really could not care less.

I picture Waino as having good days and bad days (could say that about any pitcher I guess). But I believe his good days will once again outnumber the bad. The guy is a wiley veteran and, combined with Molina behind the plate, knows how to pitch most of the big bats. Sure he will give up some home runs and the time to take him out is when the consecutive hits start to pile up but, overall, he can play on my team any day. Pay – well that’s up to the guys above my level.

Agree 100% but it also makes me wonder why from time to time we see post of people wanting to trade him or add him into a group to trade for one player or another. When you develop a player who excels year after year, why does somebody want to get rid of him in hopes of getting someone else? Oh well, some things in life still mystify me……LOL

That may be reality Brian but to me it is more like wishful thinking. But since the FO and Manager all received extensions why should they sweat? If Carpenter doesn’t hit and still plays you can bet that Mo is trying to force the square peg in the round hole to save face. As for those who say he should be put in left field if Ozuna doesn’t resign take a moment to think of Carpenters arm and it makes you appreciate Ozunas even more…….LOL
