Well if I have to say what makes it funny to me it obviously won’t be funny to you. But to me it is like my saying “Well when I hit the lottery I am going to buy this and that.” Yet I don’t even have a ticket on the lottery. No use going into detail so I’ll let it slide and uncheck myself from receiving replies to the thread. Probably better for my health anyway.

A thread with 1180 replies is one that certainly draws in the masses and, as I said earlier, I do get a lot of laughs out of it. But I suggest that it be renamed to something more descriptive such as “The Grass Is Always Greener…..” …lol

The Edman thing is getting to be a worn out horse between posters. Claude Brown, I am 80 years old and agree with most of what you say but, at this time, it is just so much water over the dam. Spring training will tell the full story. I do expect to see Edman also used as a SS backup simply because Munoz may not be the best option and because DeJong played in 159 games this season and, at the end, it showed.

Baseball is a team game so no one player accounts solely for a teams success but one player can make a huge difference, not only in wins but in team attitude. In this case, I do think Edman contributed to the overall team effort. In 2019, I cannot imagine if the Cardinals had depended on Carpenter or Munoz to play 3B.

I read the trade/acquisition thread frequently and I have to say thank you to those to post their pipe dreams. It makes me smile almost daily. We had a good season. I hope Shildt gets the MOY award and I, for one, am happy to see the FO and manager get extended contracts. Good to know we have the same coaches next year also.

Wouldn’t it be nice if they all would play on incentive contracts. Waino is proof that they work and you get what you deserve based on performance. I know it would never fly MLB wide but one can dream. If they did, Carpenter would be out with a monkey and a tin cup about now.

Soto is a jerk but I didn’t mean that should influence the vote; however, I don’t think that he looked like a Gold Glover at anytime that I saw him this season. Since the GG has become known as a symbol of excellence it may be about time that Rawlings gives some insight into their selections other than SDI.

Good writeup on SDI Brian. It brings me a bit more understanding but I am still not a believer – blame it on age and stubbornness….LOL

What is your best guess for Platinum As I read it Kolten could be in the running but Arenado will probably be the winner.

Soto, the jerk, being a finalist makes the whole program suspect.

The money doesn’t surprise me – remember Boras agent. But the years do – Is a 37, 38, 39 year old pitcher worth that much. Sounds like another bust deal about to be made. I can see why the Cardinals stay away from these kind of deals. Even Cecil and Fowler were nowhere in that area. Glad the Yanks got Stanton and his 18 games in 2019 and the Phillies and Padres are still wondering how they missed. This is a team game – not a one man wonder show. I like the way the Cards do their business but I know a lot of others disagree. So easy to spend other peoples money huh?

So at 31 years old he is turning down 4/100 in hopes of getting more. What do others think he will wind up with. My guess is 4/120. Ain’t worth much more for a guy that works one day in five and gets about 30 starts @ 1 mil per start. Just a guess but I bet that 100 mil he is passing up would pay the salary for every single minor leaguer for a year.(Brian, you probably have those numbers) Should MLB cut back on minor league teams (and players) as recently announced they will just be cutting their own throat. The pay system is too top heavy. What is most surprising to me is that the big guns tend to totally forget their experiences in the minors. But then I guess most of them were high draft picks and had big bonuses from the get-go.

A lot of those twitter posts that somebody has been putting up contain unadulterated dislike or criticism for Matheny. A few snide comments on TCN too. I call that whining but I guess there are better words for it.

I recall Cole was sort of a jerk when he was with Pittsburgh too. He was easily ‘offended’ by what some of the opposition did to his pitches or what the umpire called. The Astros made him what he is now and, as far as I am concerned, the comment saying “I am no longer an employee of the Astros” or to that effect brands him a a jerk in my book. He joins Soto in that category but Soto is only a rookie so it may take some time to put a few pitches at his head to get his attention. I am not one who thinks he will be playing at the start of next season as he still thinks his stuff don’t stink and people should pay for it. Owners are wise to those demands lately.

Lots of whining about Matheny but facts is facts and the man has a winning percentage that few others can claim and has also had championships and a WS appearance not since duplicated. I think that like any manager he worked with what he had and what he had for a pitching coach was Lilliquist who was fired this season at the Nationals. The pitching coach has to be able to lead the manager into his pitching selections. You don’t just ignore your coaches and succeed. If Mike Matheny gets any support from the FO and new ownership at KC he will do just fine.

I would have to say that Cole lost a lot of respect by coming out wearing a Boras hat and saying that he is not an employee of the Astros. So maybe they don’t cut him a paycheck. Hope he enjoys his long off season – should last until about June 2020 if not longer.

While I wasn’t pulling for them I have to give credit to the Nats on that record setting win. No other series where the road team won all the games. They beat the best in every division except their own but let the Cardinals do that. They did remind me of the 2011 Cards coming from the wild card position and having to win game 6 only they had to win it on the road.

One thing that was not that impressive in this series – the Astros bullpen.

When does spring training start – pitchers and catchers report?

I was kind of surprised last night to see the brouhaha over the running the baseline call. During the season we have seen more than one runner called out for interference but, somehow, when it happens to the Nats it becomes a major deal. Then the Joe Buck show started with him applying his expert analysis of what should be yet he knew full well the call was NOT reviewable and I believe that is what New York finally told the ump – interference is umps judgement and not reviewable. But the biggest disappointment was Martinez giving his best imitation of Earl Weaver only he was not imitating – he meant it. I cannot picture Hinch doing the same and I can now understand why Martinez had heart problems and had to stay back when the Nats met the Cards at the end of the season. He resembled a heart attack in the making last night. All in all it worked out well for the Nats so I guess they dropped their protest but Turner did run the entire way to 1B on the grass and only hit dirt when the grass ended. Interference? Maybe or maybe not but, as it is common today, he did not run in the prescribed lane. That is probably one rule that should be reviewed and a decision made where the running lane is legally. I thought Turner himself looked to be getting pretty mouthy toward the umpires but the blond headed Hispanic 2B kept him down to only simmer level.

While I have said previously said I favor the Astros it really doesn’t make a hill of beans to me who wins as I have no dog in this hunt.

Astros will break the home team losing streak but it won’t be until the late innings and Urquidy will turn out to be the star in relief.

Brian you are right about it being a Boras winter in MLB. That could also mean it will be another owners winter where the multi-millionaire wannabes are ignored during the off season and start getting itchy when ST rolls around. Personally, I would love to see that as I am one who feels this sport definitely needs a salary cap applied. Folks can say all they want about the millionaire owners but just how far do you think you can push it when, last year, the average salary was 4 million dollars and several players are now making 30+ million dollars a season based on what they did in past seasons. Overall, just my guess, is that most big big contracts have been a bust.

OK, so please educate me. What in my original post was political? Was any party mentioned? Was any politician mentioned? Was any political belief mentioned (except that I am not fond of Washington DC)?
It looks like the political police are after me but they don’t have any ammo so give it a rest please. I am not out to make enemies but I am also not out to be criticized by people seeing things in my posts that do not exist. I had no intention of making that post political but I did intend to state one reason I am not a fan of the Nationals. Sorry if folks were offended but I have seen a lot of things on here that offend me too.

PS: You read the NY Times. I watch Fox News. So shall we let it stand there.

There was nothing about partisan politics in that post of mine. But if you read it that way, perhaps you are one who needs to chill a bit. If you don’t think Washington DC is a swamp that does not reflect flyover country, you may just be one who needs to watch Fox news.

With respect to awards I have always had trouble with baseball award recipients being described as “reigning” such as “reigning MVP”. An MVP is an award for being the most valuable player for a past season and not for the one you are currently playing so how can he be “reigning? About the only ‘reigning’ title is for beauty queens who hold the title until the next year. So there. There will not be test on this information as long as rain does not mess up our reigning…….lol

The luxury tax is described this way: “A club exceeding the Competitive Balance Tax threshold for the first time must pay a 20 percent tax on all overages. A club exceeding the threshold for a second consecutive season will see that figure rise to 30 percent, and three or more straight seasons of exceeding the threshold comes with a 50 percent luxury tax.”

So if you go big and stay big you pay more.

I guess I should be supporting the Nationals as they are the National League team but I find it hard supporting a team whose fans are politicians, government workers, news hacks and lobbyists none of whom I have much respect for.

<Wooster wrote: Oh yeah I agree Sosa is a hot dog.>
You are on the right track Wooster only wrong name. Soto is the jerk on that Nats team and he is not much of an outfielder either. After the BS he was trying to pull with Mikolas by grabbing his crotch on pitches called balls I was happy to see Mikolas give the same to him in reverse. I think that young chap (21 yesterday) will wind up with another set of ear holes if he continues with his stupid stuff. At our house we just call him (Soto) The Jerk and Contreras (Cubs) is Hotdog.
