The team needs to be selling, not buying

June 23, 2021 at 3:00 pm in reply to: 2021 Cardinals MLB Game 74 thread – Wednesday, June 23 at Tigers #164632It’s looking more and more like deJong is heading for the trade block.
Who’s going to trade for him? By OPS+ (OPS indexed to a base of 100), he has fallen from 21% above league average in 2017 to 30% below league average now.
June 22, 2021 at 10:08 am in reply to: Trade Ideas/Acquisition Ideas/Non-Cards Rumors – 2021-2023 #164518He’s what you want in a bench bat. Decent defense, a power threat. And his contract as a bench bat this year and next is fine. It’s that final year that is the kicker.
June 21, 2021 at 9:53 pm in reply to: Trade Ideas/Acquisition Ideas/Non-Cards Rumors – 2021-2023 #164507Given the type of year DeJong is having, why would Miami (or any team) trade for him?

In terms of the 40 man, they are also going to need to make room for Plummer. He has a .396 OBP in AA. I would like to see what he can do in AAA. But to promote him, they are going to have to demote one or more of the players on the AAA squad to free up playing time.
June 20, 2021 at 10:13 pm in reply to: 2021 Cardinals MLB Game 72 thread – Sunday, June 20 at Braves (Game 2) #164462Forsch – they probably want to stay downtown for the most activities
If you have Hilton points, tell them to stay at the Hilton St. Louis Ballpark
June 20, 2021 at 7:34 pm in reply to: 2021 Cardinals MLB Game 72 thread – Sunday, June 20 at Braves (Game 2) #164449Shildt thought bringing in a pinch hitter with a .394 OPS with nobody on and two out was optimal to letting Kim pitch
Thompson was removed for a pinch hitter with runners in scoring position
Robertson another HR tonight. Gives him 2 doubles, 1 triple and 2 HR in his last 3 games.
I think getting depth is more important than one possible wow player.
To me, depth is in the later rounds. First round is, “who is most likely to be a star?”
Traditionally, the cardinals draft 50% pitchers, 50% position players. I can see them going a lot heavier on the pitching this year.
MLB Pipeline has Painter 17 and Stovall 28
If you believe the first round is for choosing who might be potential future superstars, the two I would slot as top options are:
1) Peyton Stovall – high school shortstop that most say will be a 2B. Bats left, throws right. Batted .512/.669/1.047 (yes, it’s high school) with an absurd 29.8% walk rate and 4.8% K rate (attributes the Cardinals love). Had 7 doubles, 1 triple, 12 HRs in 33 games. The homeruns were hit in the first two-thirds of the season, and the walk rate is in large part due to teams just completely not pitching to him the last one-third of the season. 60 Grade hit tool according to MLB pipeline.
2) Andrew Painter – high school pitcher. RHP. 60 grade fastball, sits 93-95. 55 grade curveball and changeup. 50 grade slider. 55 Control. Already has four pitches with command. The prototype of want you want in a first round pitcher.
I think he is a prime candidate for a “seller” transaction in July.
I’m not sure who would buy on Martinez at this point
Complete rebuilds are actually not smart. The Cubs and Astros each won one world series (and the Astros had to cheat).
The Cardinals get a substantial portion of their revenue from fan attendance. If you look at the impact of tear downs on fan attendance, its devastating. It is hard to win back fan trust.
The Cardinals have a lot of money coming off the books after this year. They can invest that money in pitchers (Scherzer & Lynn, for example). Add a Yimi Garcia and the just released Kyle Barraclaugh for bullpen options, and now you have much more pitching depth. Plus, Oviedo and Woodford should be much better next year.
If Arenado opts out, you have Gorman waitiing in the wings. Plus, that frees up another $35 million for free agents.
June 18, 2021 at 11:43 pm in reply to: 2021 Cardinals MLB Game 70 thread – Friday, June 18 at Braves #164337Are we getting close to the point of getting rid of players like CMart? If he isn’t going to be reliable, why keep him? I’m at the point that I would rather see Oviedo or Woodford get his starts.
It seems like it’s normally the end of June when they release players.
I thought June would be when they would wind up releasing Carpenter, but he’s been hitting better over the last few weeks, and we are so injury-ravaged.
It does make sense to move CMart into the bullpen. Bring him in during games we are already behind.
June 18, 2021 at 12:29 pm in reply to: 2021 Cardinals MLB Game 69 thread – Thursday, June 17 at Braves #164279But Goldy is better in Avg., HR, RBI, BB’s, SLG, OPS, and much better at defense.
Seems like a lot of double counting there. For instance, avg and BB’s (along with HBP) combine to make up OBP.
OBP + SLG combine to make up OPS.
Saying he has more HR”s and BB’s? Yeah, he also has twice as many ABs.
RBI’s are determined by who is on in front of you.
This year, he is really just better than Carp in slugging and defense.
I know historically we have done well with first early round college pitchers, but has that remained true under Randy Flores?
Under Flores, the Cardinals have taken two college pitchers and four high school hitters in the first round.
As for Thompson, he was one whose results never matched his stuff in college, and it does not appear the Cardinals have fixed that issue.
the Arozarena trade looks terrible in hindsight, etc.
The Arozarena for Liberatore trade only looks terrible if the other outfield Tampa was considering was Lane Thomas. If it was Tyler O’Neill, I don’t know too many people who would have chosen to give him up instead. For one, he was already in the majors, and two, if you look at his slugging percentage this year, this is what everyone was hoping for.
If Dewitt had told Mo to be patient, then we are much better today.
Throughout their tenure, they have played the long game. They infamously always came in second for big free agents. The Ozuna trade came after we had missed the playoffs. Fans were clamoring for SOMETHING from the front office, and we had gone several years without a middle-of-the-order bat.
In retrospect, the Ozuna deal looks like the worst of the bunch. He was injured when we acquired him, and did not perform to his levels in Miami. Alcantara and Gallen are now both established pitchers that would do wonders in our current rotation.
The Goldy deal looks bad, just because Goldy entered such a precipitous decline upon being traded to St. Louis (and that was a lot to give up for one year of him).
As barren as the system is now, I don’t see them doing trades for awhile.
Shildt’s contract goes through 2022. So, he can be dismissed at the end of the year.
Seems like Albert and Maddux are on year-to-year deals.
Shildt has not been as embracing of analytics as promised. It seems like Albert impacts hitters in a negative way.
I think they either need to draft pitchers that fit the max spin movement or they need to go back to more of a command-control type of pitching.
I don’t see how they are developing Nunez and his 17+ ERA by allowing him to stay in so long when he clearly didn’t have it today. What are they teaching him by leaving him in?
In Palm Beach, they let Edwin Nunes allow four runs AND load the bases before taking him out of the game. The only out he recorded was the last player he faced.
A large part of the problem with our minor league affiliates is their managers do not have their heads in the game at all.
June 15, 2021 at 5:34 pm in reply to: 2021 Cardinals MLB Game 67 thread – Tuesday, June 15 vs. Marlins #164051Yes, we will be done with Carpenter.
We will most likely be done with Carlos Martinez, but they probably won’t make that decision until the end of the year. He does have a lower WHIP than Gant, Kim and Oviedo, though.
Yes, we are paying Fowler.
June 14, 2021 at 10:28 pm in reply to: 2021 Cardinals MLB Game 66 thread – Monday, June 14 vs. Marlins #164002So far, O’Neill is the silver lining to the season
I would say O’Neill and the four pitchers who pitched tonight.
