We no doubt need to trade a catcher. The logjam in the organization has existed for awhile. I would prefer to keep Pages as a backup because we know he can actually catch but it wouldn’t be the end of the world if we traded him.
May and Romero are definitely leaving while Noot, O’Brien, Stanek, and Herrera probably shouldn’t be looking at new houses in STL.
Blaming this on Marmol is laughable.
What is amazing is how this roster made it four months above .500.
The system is out of balance in regards to revenues per team but it is also out of balance in regards to brains per team. It just so happens that the Dodgers have both. Of course, as Rosenthal noted, the actual standings tell a different tale than the usual wailing and gnashing of teeth we hear.

Hitting Walker second isn’t ideal but I think it has more to do with Herrera than anything else. They are desperateely trying to get him going so will try anything. But as was mentioned if no one is hitting then their placement in the order doesn’t make much difference.
We currently aren’t hitting or pitching but otherwise how was the play Mrs. Lincoln?
It would be nice to acquire a young OF and a young 3B but I am not expecting everything to happen in the next week. Some of it may have to happen in the offseason, which may consist of one week in March due to the upcoming CBA strife.
I wonder what happened to Urias? He came out of the Memphis after 1 at bat?
I am not sure why he came out. Hopefully it is not another setback. I feel for the guy. I have had tennis elbow in each arm and it is a rather painful experience and takes a long time to heal properly.
So who still wants to trade O’Brien? He’s not always fun to watch. But he has stats that say we don’t want to give him away. Maybe Gastelum replaces him one day, but not yet.
O’Brien is currently our best reliever which is why he has the most trade value. It is trying to build a stronger team in 2027 and 2028 instead of worrying about which team is going to sweep us out of the wild card round in 2026 should we be fortunate enough to make.

This signing signals to me that some of the guys we have in the current bullpen will not be here after the deadline thus backfill will be necessary.
Yeah I think May, Romero, and Noot have to be almost locks to be traded before August 3. None of them have any future with the organization so get what you can for them now while you still can.
O’Brien, Herrera, or Burly are much more debatable. O’Brien is the likeliest of those three to be moved but it just depends on the offers.
I don’t think Gorman has a future with the organization so it might be prudent to try to move him now for some Low A lottery pick. To bring Gorman back next year you are looking at an Arb 2 salary of around $3.5M. Are they going to pay that to watch him hit .190 or spend half the year in Memphis? I doubt it unless they think the magic elixir that turned Walker around will work on Gorman.
I wouldn’t completely give up on Victor Scott yet. He may never be an everyday player but he could be a serviceable 4th OF or defensive replacement if he can regain a little more offense.
Obviously we are going to have to address LF, CF, and 3B before 2027 if we want to be taken seriously. I’m not optimistic we have internal solutions except maybe with Church. Joshua Baez is a big wild card. Lots of power and K’s. At some point we will have to find out if he is a big league player or not. He will probably get called up before the end of August.
I don’t think PCA is overrated. He is by far the best player the Cubs have. The problem the Cubs have is they don’t have enough talent around him to deal with the Dodgers or the Brewers in the playoffs unless they pull off something big at the deadline. The Cubs are a good team but not a great team. At least right now.
The hottest team in baseball lately have been the Boston Red Sox. They are going to have to be reckoned with over in the weak AL.
Why do you say that? One plays first and the other DHes. One bats left, the other right. There is no redundancy and neither one of them is blocking anyone else.
The Cardinals already cleared up the redundancy at these positions when they traded Contreras.
I think having a full time DH limits the roster and what the manager can do with it. The Cardinals have tried to alleviate this problem by having Herrera catch two games a week but in my opinion that is a make believe solution. He really isn’t a catcher.
I mean I like Ivan Herrera a LOT and I might choose him over Burly if forced to choose. I am just saying that if we are truly trying to stockpile as much young talent as possible we should consider possible redundancies on our current roster. We have at least one black hole in the OF, if not two, and a major black hole at 3B. Those positions could be addressed by trading Burly or Herrera.

I think it is a fair argument to say the Burly and Herrera don’t fit on the roster together and one should go. Herrera is currently a full time DH masquerading as a catcher two days a week. Can he play 1B? Probably but we don’t know for sure. If Contreras can make the transition I don’t see why Ivan couldn’t.
I would be fine with trading one or the other but not both. We should be able to get a very nice prospect haul back for one of them. I know everyone is focused on pitching but perhaps we should scour around the league for a young OF or 3B. I know the Cardinals and Cubs don’t do trades but we need someone like Matt Shaw.
Herrera should never be used at catcher. He is a full time DH. The Cardinals are trying to squeeze a square peg in a round hole.
I am fine with either Crooks or Bernal in STL but not both until they both prove they can handle the defensive duties in a good way. Pages is useful to have around for his defense and ability to handle a pitching staff.
Pete Rose was one of my favorite players to watch growing up. Not only did he play the game hard but he played every day. You could pretty much pencil him in 162 times a year. It is unfortunate the way things ended up for him. Very unfortunate.
But as CIF mentioned there have been plenty of jerks in the game. Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, and Curt Schilling to name a few. I wouldn’t vote for those three to be in the HOF if you gave me $1 million.
I would do that deal as well, but don’t think Seattle would want two catchers. Even though Cal Raleigh has fallen way off this year, he is only 29 and signed through 2030.
They would probably want a pitcher in return like Mathews – someone to at least partially fill Anderson’s future – rather than Bernal.
Mike, you are correct that Seattle wouldn’t want two catchers but I don’t view Herrera as a catcher. He is really a full time DH who can be an emergency catcher. If they want a RH bat he could fit the bill.
I don’t know if I would do Herrera for Hancock straight up. In fact I am pretty sure I wouldn’t.
But I would do Herrera, O’Brien, and Bernal for Cade Anderson.
I think I would hold onto Pages because he is the only catcher in the Cardinal organization that we definitely know 100% can handle catching defensive duties. His defense and handling a pitching staff are things that I don’t know if we can replicate internally.
Sammy’s stats have been very impressive. Of course he will have to navigate through the gauntlent of other catchers in the organization.
I probably have Doyle ranked lower than most people do. I still like him but he hasn’t had a great year. He is still dealing with a lack of fastball command and trying to identify his best offspead pitch. He also was rushed to AA and shouldn’t have been. I expect him to have a better year in 2027.
