You may be selling Nootbaar short. His OPS+ of 118 is tied with JJ and Herrera for third highest on the team. It is better than I expected.
It would be helpful if someone who has had appendicitis would talk about what recovery is like.
Assuming laparoscopic surgery, there wouldn’t be a big incision to heal up. That would help.
IIRC, I saw/heard a Noot interview recently were he sounded like recovery from the foot operations was still ongoing. Maybe there is a good chance he would be a better chip at next year’s deadline, if there is one.
I have been a staunch supporter of Herrera for quite some time but I am starting to come around on jnevel’s idea of including him in the tradeable asset list. He really isn’t an everyday catcher. He might be able to play 1B but we already have one. Carrying a full time DH on your roster does limit flexibility unless he is putting up an OPS of at least .850.
Ivan’s carrying card has been his bat but even that has been diminshed this year. It looks to me like he is swinging for the fences too often instead of focusing on line drives. He has enough power for his line drives to leave the yard.
I guess I would put him in the same category as O’Brien. Not aggressively looking to trade him but would definitely consider a good offer in order to stockile more talent.
For reference, Herrera has 3 1/2 controllable years remaining, same as Walker and Winn. Burleson has one fewer at 2 1/2 and Nootbaar has 1 1/2.
More controllable years means more value in trade.
Yes, the Cardinals should enter a perpetual rebuild where we start trading away players before they even reach arbitration…Gotta get that payroll down to $26 million…
I think the rebuild will be over before the 2028 season. The farm should be well stocked with high end talent, many of it close to being MLB ready if not sooner, and all of the old Gray, Contreras, and Arenado dead money will be gone. By 2028 it will be time to be aggressive about putting together a contender capable of making a deep run. At least that is the way I see it.
I was just thinking of others who could be traded that haven’t been talked about much. Pages and Fermin might fetch a pitching prospect. We have Bernal and Mendoza who could them. There are teams looking for right handed bats. Mendoza would have to be added to the 40 man roster. And what is Gormans future with the Cards? He has little trade value right now. I think you hold onto him for this year and hope coaches can fix his swing.
Another trade candidate could be Pallante. Certainly he has exceeded expectations, and is likely to have his maximum trade value. He could be replaced by Mathews, who appears to be ready. This would be an upgrade.
I think I would hold onto Pages because he is the only catcher in the Cardinal organization that we definitely know 100% can handle catching defensive duties. His defense and handling a pitching staff are things that I don’t know if we can replicate internally.
This comment has to do with catching and with Pallante. IMO, Pallante is still settling in as a regular rotation pitcher. He still needs to mature some more. His last outing went south when he had a runner on first base. Pallante threw a catchable wild pitch/passed ball that Crooks let roll right passed him and back to the wall. The runner advanced to second base. Then a pitch was hit back to Pallante. The runner advanced to third and Pallante tried to throw the runner out at third and was late. Now Pallante had runners on first and third with nobody out. Pallante’s start went downhill for the rest of the inning although he did pull himself together eventually. It all started with Crooks stabbing at a catchable ball that was off the plate on the ground. My points are that we need a catcher that can handle defense, and Pallante could still become a reliable starter.
Pallante has 2 more years of control, and makes 4 million, which will likely increase greatly next year. I am just afraid he will revert back to his 2025 form. Right now he is trade able. And one of our prospects, Mathews and/or Dobbinscan easily replace him. Plus our future starting prospects like Fitts, Roby, Molina will add depth next year. I’m not even including Mautz, who seems to be moved to the bullpen this year.
Your points are well taken. I hadn’t given much thought to Pallante’s cost, control, arbitration, etc. I just think it’s fascinating and satisfying to see a young twenty something progress, and at some point, achieve his dream.
C27 – Have you figured out what we have with Leahy yet? Is he pitching beyond his means, or has he emerged as something special?
Is there a trade where we could get Castillo and Sloan for a deal involving Herrera. I know this may not work for the Mariners as they would want more, as we would have to some cash to offset the Castillo $$$. My thought is if you get a rebound from Castillo, and a future ace in Sloan. Another factor is the Cards won’t want to take on salary.
Mud, I think that Leahy is for real. He is like May in that he has improved after his first 5 or 6 starts. I think he had to get used to starting again, which he did in the minors.
Lots of teams looking for catchers. A 118 OPS, should be DH only, should be on the list. Really like Ivan as a hitter, but 6 of 106 throwing out runners. I’m sorry, he’s controllable and should be on the list of VERY tradable players.
Maybe I’m jaded after Yadi. Hell, Ted Simmons, (one of my all time favorites), got hammered back in the day as not being a really good defensive catcher. 34% caught stealing. Plus he went after Bill Madlock in a all time donnybrook. (I was in the RF bleachers. Heck yeah!)

I wonder if the Cardinals would be interested in a pitcher that grew up across the river in my hometown of Highland? Geoff Hartlieb was DFA’d by the Athletics today.
The Helsley is looking very good. Jesus Baez could be our next third basemen. He might even make Winn tradeable.
I am not in favor of trading Herrera unless we could get something like Romero and Herrera for Sloan. I just don’t know if Seattle has an opening at dh or first base, which would be the position Herrera would fill. Maybe spell Raleigh at catcher infrequently.
The one big need for us would be to acquire or draft an ace for our rotation. Doyle may be that but has struggled with his secondaries.
Leahy might turn out to be that ace. Caray said his ERA is 1.21 over his last seven games.
I get a stomachache every time a catchable ball hits the dirt slightly to the right of Crooks and rolls back to the wall. Crooks is just plain clumsy, IMHO.
When knee down catchers first started appearing, it was never with a runner on, nor with two strikes on the batter. The reduced mobility only affected going after pop ups behind the plate. But it was a camel’s nose in the tent. Now the whole camel is in the tent.
