RHP Michael McGreevy (4-8, 3.07) vs. RHP Colin Rea (7-7, 4.85)
Cards.TV // TBS // KMOX // WIJRPittsburgh now a game and a half up on our club as we are at the .500 mark – 2-8 in our last 10.
We are not getting the clutch hits we got earlier. Plus Ollie has screwed around with the top of the order and is not using guys where their value best applies like he did most of the season, at least in my opinion.
And of course the pitching is showing some stress.
None of this is a big surprise since we are looking more at the longer term. But our first half play gave hopes of competing this year. Maybe that will still happen, but I think we will end the season anywhere from a few games under to a few games over break even.
Hitting Walker second isn’t ideal but I think it has more to do with Herrera than anything else. They are desperateely trying to get him going so will try anything. But as was mentioned if no one is hitting then their placement in the order doesn’t make much difference.
We currently aren’t hitting or pitching but otherwise how was the play Mrs. Lincoln?
You put your best hitters at the top of the lineup to ensure maximum plate appearances. This is the standard now as analytics have shown this is optimal.
Putting Walker second is not the problem statistically. Now, whether hitting in a different spot has messed with Walker’s head is a different story. I don’t know why it would, but humans are weird.
We could run through every scenario as to why a player individually or a team collectively, are not producing offensively as they have in the past, but to me that is an exercise in futility. They either do or they don’t.
Mental issues are not within the control of the manager and can’t be fixed by him.

Are we going to strap on the ol’ snorkel masks tonight and slip under the surface to join the Reds gasping for air or are we going to work our way back to flirting with 10 above? I know I know, this year isn’t supposed to count but I kinda got used to that high mediocre baseball which has now left me craving for more. Lets go guys, these are the Cubs!

For my part, I’m contributing a din-din of good old fashioned meat loaf with baked potatoes, corn and a green salad, finishing off with butterscotch brownies.
There appears to be a storm cell that is in central Missouri as I am typing this. Hard to tell yet whether it will impact the greater metropolitan St. Louis area later today. Stay tuned for further developments.
And din-din today will be a Subway BMT with lettuce, onions, mayo, mustard, some mashed potatoes, an ice cold Faygo Grape drink, and a big bowl of Turkey Hill Vanilla Bean ice cream. All of this whilst me and Whitey Herdog are on the couch watching the Indians and Reds in Game One of their DH today from Riverfront Stadium.
Tonight’s game will determine whether or not the Cardinals remain the one and only team in the Big Leagues to have not been below .500 this season. We’ll see what happens, but they look like they’re about to strike the colors in regards to the ’26 season.
Walker won the home run derby so he will be terrible for a while.
My sense with Herrera is he is following a familiar pattern with some promising young Cardinal hitters peaking their first year or two and then a steep decline.

I don’t think switching Walker and Herrera is why we are not hitting much, but I don’t think it is the best use of them either. I think the other way around was better.
While maybe there are not optimal barring orders, there are orders that are better than others . The Red Sox of the ‘40s and ‘50s had one of the best on base guys in the history of the game in Ted Williams but never had him lead off. His power and all around hitting was better utilized behind the top of the lineup, not the bottom.
Us humans always try to connect the dots and find cause and effect. It helps us feel better about things. But life is full of randomness, and sometimes things just happen.
Maybe we can randomly hit tonight! 😄
The storm cell that was in central Missouri has apparently drifted south of the greater metropolitan St. Louis area and will not impact tonight’s game. And according to the Doppler Radar all clear in the midwest about an hour before first pitch.
But, as I’ve said before, when it’s this hot and humid those little popup thunderstorms can occur in a hurry. And trust me, it’s hot and humid out. I know because I just got done jogging outside.

Din-din here is burgers from our favorite food truck. I am at a local brew pub enjoying a cold frosty one while waiting for the burgs. Taking them home and we will have them at the homestead.
On the side are not traditional fries, but their version which are more like chunks of potatoes deep fried and seasoned. They are really good!
Tomorrow evening I will be at the White Sox – Yankees game. My cousin and I are doing our annual trek to the National Sports Collectors Convention in Chicago. I have an autograph ticket for Willie McGee, and hope to add a couple of Jackie Robinson cards to my collection, along with other items.
Whatever happened to Herrera catching McGreevy?
Crooks has caught McGreevey’s last two games, and he gave up 4 runs and 7 runs, respectively.
Maybe catcher ERA is a thing…
Before long we will be battling the Reds for last place in the NL Central.
If we aren’t already there, that is.
Decided to check back in on the game. We are down 7-0. We have .182 hitting Jimmie Crooks up to bat. I think I will check back again later on. I know we are rebuilding, but does that mean we keep guys hitting under .200 on the roster? Pitchers with ERA over 5 on the roster?
What do we have to sell that anybody would want???
And what on earth would anybody give us for anybody we have???
