Putting Svanson in the game was giving the game away almost intentionally.
Marmol intentionally gives away about a game a week with his lineup half-full of bench players on “get away” games.
His bullpen usage the past two weeks does seem to indicate he is taking orders to throw away winnable games.
July 26, 2026 at 6:00 pm #314175I mean, maybe there was simply no one else he could use today in that spot other than Svanson.
I just dont understand why Svanson is in StL.

I think he is out of options, and he performed well last year. So, they are trying to recapture the magic without losing him to a wire claim from a team that can “fix” him.
I would have released Stanek in June.
July 26, 2026 at 6:34 pm #314183They have only 7 pitchers in their pen because they chose to carry 6 starters. Graceffo threw 2 innings yesterday so he wasn’t available and apparently O’Brien was sick. That left 5. Gastellum, Stanek, and Soriano had already been used. The choice was either extend Soriano to a second inning (probably the better choice) or use the fresh Svanson. More right handers were coming up so Bruihl wasn’t a good choice. Svanson does have strikeout ability which is good in a runner on second situation but he also has been very hittable this season.
Marmol hasn’t had the bullpen pieces to rely on this season like he had the past two. It’s hard to try to manage what he does have effectively, especially when you have to think about who will be available tomorrow.
July 26, 2026 at 6:41 pm #314184Svanson is not out of options, but the choices to replace him are few.

ParticipantBelieve me this team isnt good enough to throw away winnable games. If someone else came in and gave up the runs, what would be the excuse then. I dontvl see anyone to blame in this game but if you was going to dole any out, it would be on the offense but maybe thats just me being realistic.
July 26, 2026 at 6:48 pm #314187So who still wants to trade O’Brien? He’s not always fun to watch. But he has stats that say we don’t want to give him away. Maybe Gastelum replaces him one day, but not yet.
July 26, 2026 at 6:50 pm #314188Days of rest going in to today was
O’Brien 4
Svanson 3
Bruihl 3
Gastelum 2
Soriano 2
Stanek 2
Graceffo 1July 26, 2026 at 6:54 pm #314189I don’t enjoy calling for people’s jobs to be eliminated, but Svanson needs to be sent packing up the Svanny River pronto. Do not…….and I repeat do not give up on Luis Enrique Gastelum yet. He’s just starting to get settled in……we’re all going to be very pleased with what Gassy brings to the table. And I love “The Ferminator” reference earlier in this thread by……I think by the esteemed LACardFan.
July 26, 2026 at 8:11 pm #314197Getting rooked on trading away Paul DeJong seems like it should be impossible.

ParticipantIm all for trading obrien if it gives us something better in return long term. Obrien has good stuff and if this team was in championship mode id keep him but we arent.
