This team is so dismal right now it is driving me nuts. I think I need to step away for awhile and let them do what may.
I think the Cards are actually interested and motivated to do a deal for Stanton. When you look at some of the contracts being thrown around for guys like Upton, Cespedes, etc…, Stanton’s contract might not look so bad in a few years.
I think the big hurdle right now is Miami’s ownership status is in a big pile of limbo. I doubt a big deal like Stanton can be approved until their ownership status is resolved and who knows when that will be.
Too bad Mags Sierra doesn’t have the sample size to justify staying with the big club when Grichuk and Piscotty come off the DL. I guess a .429 avg and nine game hitting streak isn’t good enough. If he raises his average to .600 can he stay? We all know that Piscotty’s .236 avg is preferable.
Chitown, I think your ideas are very reasonable and probably line up with what DeWitt, Mo, and Girsch are thinking based on their recent comments. I get the feeling we are going to be active the next two weeks and they have said repeatedly they will look to move short term assets for long term assets but also be “open minded” about all scenarios.
As a side note I read where the Cubs, after getting Quintana, are now after Sonny Gray. Surely they are going to have to deal from their MLB roster eventually, right? How many freaking top MiLB prospects could they have left? It irritates me that they can make trades w/o giving up guys like Schwarber, Baez, Russell, or Happ.
I’m a big fan of Grichuk also. I actually think he is more valuable to this team than Piscotty right now. If they both got 550 AB’s I think their lines would be:
Grichuk: .240 avg 25HR 80 RBI
Piscotty: .260 avg 15HR 70 RBII know Grichuk will strike out more but I still like his line better. I think he is a better defender and has more speed, and costs less.
Going year to year doesn’t prevent players from putting food on the table. If the players perform they will be paid well through the arbitration process but they have to keep performing each year until they reach FA.

Personally I’m not a fan of locking up younger players long term either. I know that teams love the cost certainty but in many cases the players flop. I think this could be due to various factors. It could be the pressure of a big contract or it could be complacency due to a big contract. I prefer the year to year arbitration process.
The difference is the Angels are not in sell mode and the Marlins are.
Stanton is locked in for three more years then he has an opt out.
I could see them being both a seller and a buyer. Trading Lynn and Oh is obvious but we could also see what Carp or Rosenthal could fetch. The buying should be limited to long term assets. Donaldson isn’t a long term asset IMO but Stanton would be.
Here are couple of bold trades:
Send Piscotty, Adolis Garcia, Diaz, Alcantara, and Hudson to the Marlins for Stanton.
Send Lynn, Oh, Leake, and Carp to Yankees for Torres and Clippard.
Insert Weaver into the rotation and call up Marco for the rotation.
Call up Sierra to platoon with Pham or Grichuk.LF Fowler

Also could promote Torres next year to play SS as soon as he is healthy.
Could insert Reyes into rotation or bullpen as soon as he is healthy.The Angels could afford Stanton since Josh Hamilton is coming off their books after this year but I don’t know if they have the prospects to make it happen. Having Stanton and Trout in the same lineup would be tempting but they probably will invest in pitching instead. I say probably because you never know when Arte Moreno will get a wild hair.
I read an article online today, maybe from Jim Bowden, suggesting that the Cards offer Miami Piscotty, Gomber, and Woodford for Stanton. I just don’t see it happening.
Since our two biggest needs have been a big bat and shoring up the bullpen why not try to do both with the Jays?
Gyroko, Grichuk, Marco, Alcantara, and Hudson for Donaldson and Osuna.
Donaldson is struggling big time this year so maybe that will drive his price down a bit, and also the fact he will be a FA after 2018.
Well our offense has been a joke most of this year as well so I don’t mind them trying to get more bats in the lineup.
