If Schrock can keep his hitting, and his track record says he can, Wong and/or Wacha (because of our suyrplus) could be chips that MIGHT be tradeable in the right offer. If Wong can back on track, he obviously is more valuable. Selling high is always the thought, but it seems the PIscotty/Grichuk/Valera/Lucas brought back a pretty good haul, especially we weren’t selling high.
Heck, even the Adams deal is maybe looking brighter. At the time, it looked Yepez was a bag of beans. (No offense Juan)I like Martinez hitting third. He seems like their most consistent hitter. I don’t think the 2 hole is good for Molina though.
Are there numbers supporting why starters don’t go deeper into games? Is it really an issue across MLB about going thru the lineup a 3rd time? I could see some young arms being protected, but the only young starter they have is Weaver, and even he seems like best strike thrower of the lot. The others I would consider veterans, and at this point could throw 100+ pitches.
I thank Albert Pujols for his service and great times here in the Lou. Would love to see the Angels come to St Louis. Nothing but love for ALbert.
I keep forgetting about Reyes. He will require a 25 and 40 man roster spot when activated. Maybe Hicks goes out at that time. Although that would be a killer combo.
Whoever is the managers favorite should have no bearing on the 7 or 8 relievers. Reyes I would think would be getting close to starting a rehab if all is on schedule.
I would really like to see an upgrade at reliever and alleviate the roster crunch. I am curious what notable relievers are free agents next year? Some might be available at the trade deadline. I have always liked the potential of Jake Diekman, but this is probably not an upgrade.
Now down to 7 relievers, I wonder what happens when Cecil comes off the DL. And maybe Holland figures things out soon. His last outing was better. My concern is that, ,like last year, there were times when Matheny couldn’t trust 2, 3 and sometimes 4 of his relievers, so 4 or 5 got worked much harder. The situation right now is that Holland is not the closer yet and still working things out, and that Cecil has only a small stretch last year where he was good. I would like to see Bowman sent down, and perhaps Brebbia or Mayers up. Keep shuttling them by how effective they are. Perhaps go back to an 8 man bullpen for short periods, although I am not a fan. Another solution would be to upgrade a reliever by making a 2 for 1 trade.
Wacha has got to be better. It is amazing how someone with his talent has done fairly poor the last few years. I think he does not utilize the change up and curve often enough. You just can’t keep pounding fastballs in. I thought when he that outstanding spring training game against the Blue Jays he maybe on the way to his old self. Like anything, it is very early.
I sure wish Price would have been fired after Sundays game. Seems like teams get a bump, temporarily from a firing, even a bad team.
Did Weaver look very bad today? Didn’t see him pitch today, maybe they arrange him NOT to pitch against the CUbs if possible?
I am impressed so far by the number of prospects at Peoria and Palm Beach, and Springfield to some degree.
I did not expect this many.
Peoria– Montero, Gonzalez, and Bryant are hitting very well. Yepez is on fire. Figuera may have been overlooked. I like Julio Rodriguez even though he has not had consistency, as it is too bad he couldn’t get more playing time. On the pitching side, Walsh, Dobzanski, and Malcom stand out.Palm Beach– Mendoza and Young look very good, and may be on their way to Springfield, although Young has more prospects in front of him. Mieses has cut down on his strikeouts.
Standout pitchers are Shew, O’Reilly, and Williams. If there weren’t a logjam of starters in front of him Shew would be in for a quick promotion. And Williams could be 2017 Mercado, and at least so far, comeback player of the year, and regain prospect status.Springfield– The huge surprise is Lane Thomas. I hope he can keep it up. He could zoom up the propect list. However he many outfielders in front of him.
Greenes last 2 starts have been very good. Helsley, Woodford, and Tewes are all struggling, with the first 2 having serious command issues.
Ellis has been very good, and maybe relief is his calling. I also like Arias.I don’t live too far from Peoria, and would like to see Walsh pitch.
I am old school about stats. No GS, WAR, or OPS for that matter.
How about , homers, rbi’s, average, OBP, Slugging percentage,
K/ 9 innings, hits per 9 innings, walks per 9 innings, ERA.
I think I am knowledgeable enough to know the good, from the average, from the bad.I see no need to reinvent the wheel. But to each their own.
I have to eat crow on how well Norris is doing. After his less than stellar spring training I was expecting the worst. It’s too bad (and early) Holland is not doing well, as that would be nice 1-2 punch for late innings, not even including Hicks.
I guess you can’t gp back, but I thought Carp was going to swing less for the fences. He seems to try to pull everything. And keep trying bunt against the shift.
I wonder how long before O’ Neill gets a shot in the St Louis outfield? Bader hit a big home run yesterday, but maybe the next time they give the regulars time off the next 2 weekends they bring him up.
It seems like Hudson should miss more bats. But he is usually a groundball machine. Maybe a shift to the pen is in his future. Some have said HHH, (Hicks, Helsley, Hudson) will all eventually be bullpeners. I hope not.
Our bullpen still has too many issues. Leone needs to improve fast. He is going to be on the DL with whiplash if these home runs keep happening. Is he tipping his pitches?
The baserunner, Barnhart was out of the baseline, inside the foul line. The way I read the rule, you cannot run to the left of the foul line. I’m glad we won any way.
I liked the strike zone last night. It was pretty wide. I would much rather games being decided by players swinging the bat than being a ball four being called by a pitch a quarter inch off. And no, I was not a pitcher in high school. Or ever.
Not sure what to make of O’Reilly. He came out of nowhere last year. I guess AA will be a true test for him sometime this year, if he keeps this up.
Can someone please explain to me why the Angels have not played in St Louis in quite a while? I think the rotation for the Angels playing here should have been 2 years ago possibly?
I think fans would love to give him a big ovation for all he did for us, and even after he left, the draft picks allowed us to stay in contention and give veteran players like Wainright and others the money they deserved. Otherwise we could have never afforded those contracts.
