I know the season is young but the 2-5 Springfield Cards have 3 batting in the top 8 in the Texas League.
Lane Thomas 3rd – .429 Tommy Edman 6th – .407 and John Nogowski 8th – .364. Its better to be where they are now than at the bottom of the list. All these early hits count. I wish the Cards could get going and put some wins together now that they’re at home.

This is from yesterday’s P-D’s Rick Hummel Q-A. His answer floored me.

Is there a roster limit in AAA, AA, etc.? When the major league club makes a move on the 25 man roster, do they have to make corresponding moves at the minor league levels?
    by hubie55 2:28 PM yesterday
    ANSWER:
Minor league rosters, I believe are 22 players, perhaps 21. But they have a seven-day disabled list, which helps.

And there are guys thanking him for being so knowledgeable about the game. WTF

At least he got the DL part right. Even basic common sense would tell you a 21-22 man roster is not feasible – unless you think they only play 3-4 times a week.

Memphis played its’ first xtra inn game yesterday, and with the “runner on 2nd to start the inning rule” there were 3 IBBs combined in that inning. The new rule is very conducive to setting up for double plays by putting a force on the runners. If you like the rule or not…. it seems awkward. It does get the game over with quickly, keeps managers happy by not having to overextend their bullpens and will keep travel day plans more sane. Still, some extra inning games are exciting…. others a giant bore if they are too long.

The PB Cards played two xtra inn. games on 4-7 & 4-8. Both went 10 and win and a loss. So the theory and results seem to work.

Peoria won its’ game last night 6-2 scoring 6 in the 8th. The inning line was 6 runs, 4 hits, 3 errors a walk, a HBP and a wild pitch. All this compliments of the Quad City Bandits now the low-A HOU affiliate.
Although starter Nicasio wasn’t the benefactor of the sloppy play, he pitched 6.0 strong innings and received a 63 GS. A whole lot better than his initial start… a 3.0 inn start that earned him a 9 GS… lowest of the season for any pitcher in the organization. A breathe of relief for all.

It will be interesting to see who will replace Jones (DLed) in the Springfield rotation. I don’t know the extent of his injury but he would have been up to pitch on Saturday. That would coincide with Oxnevad’s scheduled start for PB.

It might allow the beach patrol to put Williams back in their rotation???

That can’t be true. What was Oviedo’s GS from his first start?

    This is true.

    Oviedo Apr.7 0.1 IP 0-H 5-R 5-ER 5-BB 1-K 0-HR GS=18
    Nicasio Apr.11 3.1 IP 6-H 7-R 6-ER 1-BB 4-K 3-HR GS= 9

Three of the four scheduled games in the organization couldn’t be played yesterday (Springfield was off) But there is baseball being played! The Palm Beach Florida Cardinals unleashed an offensive barrage on Bradenton(PIT), in an 11-1 win. They put up a 6 in the 8th.

    The Cardinals line = 11-R 13-H 2-2B 4-HRs. Andy Young was 4-5, 2-HRs, 3-RBIs. Trosclair had a HR + a double, and new-comer Mieses added a HR.

    Evan Kruczynski pitched 6.0inn 1-ER 1-BB and 9-Ks. GS=74.

The only negative was 3B Mendoza’s two fielding errors, now 5 on the season (13 games). His bat has been crazy hot (.354), but his defense is a concern. I hope he can get his glove together because this guy can hit, and hit for power. The rising star is 6′-2″ 200lb, he’ll be 22 in two months and has a clear path ahead of him at AA and AAA. B. Walton recently pegged him at #26 on his prospects list for April, and he could closing in on #20 by May. Extra fielding work is in order.

Obviously HR’s is a huge factor in calculating game scores.

CC, honestly I don’t how the GS is calculated or gauged, but I find it a useful way to evaluate performance nonetheless.

I use a line graph for each starter to establish progress (or not) and change the line color when a player is promoted or sent back. For me, rising or maintained GSs upon being sent to the next level is a good indication that progress is being accomplished.

When the pitcher has enough starts to begin averaging the GS #s (I throw out the worse one), its a accurate view of the status of a prospect. Its one number and avoids the numerous stats that can be confusing to some. However, I also use Ks/IP, BB/IP and WHIP and draft status in evaluating prospects.

I know that everyone else uses other stats to size up pitchers, so I always incorporate other people’s/ group’s lists based on my perceived of credibility. I sense that you are another avid follower of the system and your ideas on the the same are taken with due respect.

I don’t see how Nicacio’s start was worse at all. That’s odd how GS is calculated.

I am old school about stats. No GS, WAR, or OPS for that matter.
How about , homers, rbi’s, average, OBP, Slugging percentage,
K/ 9 innings, hits per 9 innings, walks per 9 innings, ERA.
I think I am knowledgeable enough to know the good, from the average, from the bad.

I see no need to reinvent the wheel. But to each their own.

I am impressed so far by the number of prospects at Peoria and Palm Beach, and Springfield to some degree.
I did not expect this many.
Peoria– Montero, Gonzalez, and Bryant are hitting very well. Yepez is on fire. Figuera may have been overlooked. I like Julio Rodriguez even though he has not had consistency, as it is too bad he couldn’t get more playing time. On the pitching side, Walsh, Dobzanski, and Malcom stand out.

Palm Beach– Mendoza and Young look very good, and may be on their way to Springfield, although Young has more prospects in front of him. Mieses has cut down on his strikeouts.
Standout pitchers are Shew, O’Reilly, and Williams. If there weren’t a logjam of starters in front of him Shew would be in for a quick promotion. And Williams could be 2017 Mercado, and at least so far, comeback player of the year, and regain prospect status.

Springfield– The huge surprise is Lane Thomas. I hope he can keep it up. He could zoom up the propect list. However he many outfielders in front of him.
Greenes last 2 starts have been very good. Helsley, Woodford, and Tewes are all struggling, with the first 2 having serious command issues.
Ellis has been very good, and maybe relief is his calling. I also like Arias.

I don’t live too far from Peoria, and would like to see Walsh pitch.

In Peoria, Oviedo needed that dominant start last night if nothing more than to get his confidence churning. The 3-4-5 is keeping this team hot… won 5 out of last 6. YGonzalez(.378)-Montero(.378)-Yepez(.425), are all off to good starts.

At Omaha… Poncedeleon pitched well enough to get Memphis a W last night but the offense took a rare night off. Its Ponce’s third out of three well pitched starts. His comeback is progressing ahead of schedule. Munoz came out of the game after being drilled in the 7th. Some sort of retaliation for Ponce hitting two batters earlier in the game?

Sam Tewes problems continued last night. Usually pretty consistent, it took Tewes three starts last season to get him going, so maybe the worst is over with for him this season.

Connor Jones is still listed as the SP for Springfield tonight although he’s still on the DL. There are many options to pick up this start, including the long shot Casey Meisner who is at EST or one of the others there Schlesener-Sexton-Summerville. It might depend on who is showing the most promise for ’18. Its hard to know who because so little is passed around from EST.

Heads up that the minor league thread here on the forum as well as the Minor League Notebook on the home page list the correct starter for Springfield tonight – Jake Woodford.

Perhaps surprisingly, MiLB.com is not always the most dependable source. Obviously whoever is posting their probables is not paying attention to who is on the disabled list. It is not Springfield doing it.

Actually, Chris Ellis will slide in for the spot-start in Jones’ place. No Meisner, though you have to wonder when he will make his season-debut.

Speaking of Ellis, I will always sense a connection with he and Gant (JGarcia trade). Gant could be starting for a number of MLB teams while Ellis has struggled and at 25 finds himself in the SPFD bullpen. Admittedly, at the time of the trade I thought Ellis had the higher ceiling.

Yeah, Ellis is still scheduled for Sunday. Stuff-wise, Gant doesn’t match him. I think Ellis could be a solid MLB reliever and honestly would take him over Tuivailala right now. He can be overpowering at times with a plus fastball and curveball.

Back to Oviedo’s start. Good progress, but it was not as dominant as the numbers suggest. Manager Chris Swauger had relievers up and throwing in the third inning. At that point, Oviedo had already walked four.

We’re coming up on 20 games played, less rain/etc outs, so productivity numbers are still early but getting more meaningful.

For Springfield, Woodford continues to struggle mightily. Through four starts his ERA=7.36 WHIP=2.13. Being 21 and pitching AA ball is a challenge, let’s see if he figures it out in his next four starts.

Urias was 1-14 at Memphis as a backup INF. They bounce him down to SPFD and in his first game there he goes 4-4; two doubles. Maybe he needs time at this level… ya think.

Knizner has moved to the top of the Texas League batting leaders at .429. How this catching situation plays out is anyone’s guess with Kelly having a rough go in ’18. The thing is Knizner may not need time at MEM to prove he is MLB-ready. He has nothing left to prove at AA, but there he is.

A couple of notes from Palm Beach where Andy Young (37rd pick in ’17) has taken over as the FSL HR leader at 6. I looked at the PB-Card’s lineup and noticed that the present 3-4-5 hitters (Billins-Mendoza-Young) have put this team on their backs. I did some calcs and concluded that the threesome is batting .333 (60-180). The rest of the team is 85-567 a very different .219.

Shew was just starting to have songs written about him for his first 3 starts and right on queue he throws one of those games you would like to forget. I have confidence that he’ll bounce back.

The Peoria starters have done an about face. In their first 8 starts their GS numbers averaged 36.5. In their last six the average is 67.0. They had 3 games cancelled during their first 8 for various weather related reasons, so that might have factored into the difference in performance. At one point they were 1-5, but have won 7 of 8 since. GO CHIEFS.

Any idea why Meisner and Junior Fernandez haven’t pitched yet? Hopefully they are not injured and out for a while. Granted there is a logjam of young arms, which is a pleasant problem.

I thought I read that Fernandez is hurt. No idea about Casey Meisner.
