Another possibility for the AFL roster is Davila from Springfield. He has yet to be scored on in August. Though he probably won’t have enough innings to be pitcher of the month. I think he may have added a splitter/changeup.
Shouldn’t Clemente be promoted? Maybe they don’t want to mess up the Springfield chemistry? That team seems to have something special going on. Or maybe they don’t want teams an idea of taking him in the Rule 5 draft, if there is one.
Will the FO will have to prep for a Rule 5 draft even though it may not happen? That seems a waste of time. Unless they announce an early cancellation which seems unlikely. It would seem after the World Series at the earliest.
Eagen has been really good since coming over in the trade from Arizona. He struck out 11 last night. The lefty reliever Santana has very good as well. Peete hit 2 homers. Only Peoria is under .500.
The FO clearly does not favor Rincon. It’s funny how an organization likes some players, yet does not give others a chance. I thought Rincon might get a chance to a starter at AA or AAA, even with multiple injuries that didn’t happen. Then he had a rough April and May. But after those months his era is around 2.25. Yet they add Winquest, whose only very month was August. I’m guessing that Rincon will walk as a minor league free agent after this year. All of this Despite us having a having a bad bullpen.
So far all their promotions have been justified and the prospects have eventually done well or flourished. Many questioned the Rodriguez promotion to AA, but he has proven worthy.
I am wondering who would be on their AFL roster? There will be a lot of pitchers who have thrown a lot of innings, and would likely need rested. Not sure but maybe Eagen and Santana. Maybe Rodriguez, but he has had a busy year and will be involved in the Springfield playoffs. Peete, Gurevitch, and Ragland could be possibilities.
I am curious if the FO would allow/want Doyle and Rodriguez to participate in both Springfield and Memphis playoff runs. Their regular seasons end one week apart, September 13th and 20th respectively. If both teams go to the playoffs there may be time to add the 2 prospects. It would be great experience for them. Rodriguez and Bernal could alternate catching much like they likely will next season. Springfield has yet to make the playoffs, but the had a 4 game lead in their division when I checked last.
I’ve watched Doyle and others pitch to Rodriquez. He’s made a few mistakes, but to me he has a strong arm and passes my eye test defensively. But like any other young catcher he needs more reps behind the plate.
Santana appears to be one of the best relief prospects in the minors. He has only given up 2 runs at the AA level. Much like Eagen and Ragland he appears he may be on track to be in St Louis next year sometime.
Rodriguez looks like the real deal. I am on the fence whether I’d like to see him get a promotion. He deserves it, but I think Springfield has a great chance with him to repeat as Texas League champs.
Digging through some stats I found that 21 year old outfielder Peña has 51 extra base hits. He does strike out quite a bit, but also has 23 stolen bases. If he can cut down on his K rate he might be able to advance.
Baez’s approach may have something to do with the odd doubles/homers combo, but 50 extra base hits is fourth in the system. Couple that with the lowest K percentage of all of the top prospects and I believe we have something special. He’s also a good and versatile fielder.
Unlike his Baez bash brother, Jesus doesn’t strike out much. Especially with the power he brings to the table. It doesn’t appear he’ll hit for average, but with 34 homers this year he would look awfully in the Lou at third base.
Baez is only 22. To me he is now our number 4 prospect. Rodriguez, Doyle, and the other Baez bash brother are the only others ahead of him on my list.
Leahy has been great. The only down side is that he is 29. Also, I was wondering why he came out of the game yesterday with only 63 pitches. Given how much our bullpen had been used, I would have thought he would have near 100 pitches.
Rodriguez is amazing, and only 19. He could be in the show before he can legally drink. A full year at Memphis next year (maybe a cup of coffee with them this year while they finish their year, and have their playoffs), and conceivably get a September call up possible.
It would be best for the Cards to have the Rule 5 cancelled. We let Stanek and Urias go, and add Rincon and Mendoza. Rincon has pitched really well this year, especially lately. Mendoza has improved, and is versatile defensively, and could replace Urias, and/or Fermin. Both Mendoza and Rincon are pending minor league free agents.
I’ll make my prediction for who replaces Dobbins in the rotation. Since the Cards have a new throwaway toy in Fleming, who is pitching for Memphis today i say he will be Shuster 2.0, 3.0 or 4.0. He actually has pitched well at AAA this year, well, except for today. Even so, he gave 5 innings.
Of course there is an off day Monday. But with the double header against the Reds that may affect their decisions also.
Who is replacing Dobbins in the rotation? Might it be Hjerpe? He might slot in after his start tonight with Memphis? I wonder if they’d do a stopgap option like Shuster. I hope not, though. Maybe add Thompson? But I would prefer calling up Hjerpe to either of those choices.
Not sure how bad Dobbins injury is, which makes me wonder if Hjerpe could be an option. At least he might be able to give multiple innings. Stop gap options could be Thompson from Memphis, a return of Roby. Now I understand that Roby needs to get some live action in. If he can get some effective outings in maybe he can help within a month. I’m just trying to figure out options if Pallante and Dobbins are out for a bit.
Clemente has shown improvement, but might make the perfect Rule 5 pickup. And I have always liked Rincon, and he has really done well after a rough start. I think it’s unfortunate he wasn’t allowed to continue starting. Because of that, I am not sure the FO values him that much and he may go unprotected. I believe Rincon can be a minor league free agent after this year. For that reason I would give him a try in the Lou. Assuming Stanek isn’t brought back next year, I think they should cut him now.
