My point was that Holland threw more sliders than fastballs, which shows an alarming lack of confidence in his fastball. And his velocity was down from last year. As far as using him that night, I don’t have a problem with that.
Anthony Shew has moved fast, 7 quality innings today.
If he keeps thus up, Ronnie Williams might make it back on the prospect list.
Something looked wrong about Holland. I thought he threw harder than what he showed last night, and he threw a ton of sliders. He threw 90-92.
I really do not like having starters conditioned at the end of Spring Training to go only 5 innings. I think all starters not named Wainright need to be tested once near the end of ST to attempt to go 6+. Not everyone has an Andrew MIller.
Matheny gets too comfortable with certain relievers. His love of Bowman is something I don’t get. He has a good chunk of fault, along with the front office, with the state of Siegrist and Rosenthals current careers’. Granted, the front office could have aided their manager, and at times they have, but not often enough.
Bottom line is you have to use all of your roster. Our calling card, pardon the pun, is depth. SO why not use it?
Anyone who has pitched 4 games in a week/ 7 team games, is on a pace for 83 games. We have 4 of these pitchers. If the pace keeps up, this is very disturbing. Mayers is on a pace for 23 games.
Mike Matheny, while being a really good guy, is a terrible manager. His use of pitchers defies logic, and overuse has helped Rosenthal, Siegrist, and soon Bowman to the DL list often. Lyons, Bowman, and Hicks have pitched 4 games already, and all of the others in the pen have pitched 3, while Mayers has pitched 1. Mayers could have pitched another game or 2,and perhaps 2 innings.
And please, please do not trot out Hicks at this rate. He is something special that could be a future ace, or closer. Please let Mayers know he is still on the team.
Peoria has a number of interesting relievers who had some high k/9 innings ratio. I’ll be interested to see them at Peoria along with Walsh, Oviedo, and Seijas.
Despite a tough loss in Milwaukee, I see more optimism this season.
1) I think our offense will be better with the addition of Ozuna, and Martinez playing more regularly.
2) The bullpen, once a glaring weakness, will be among the better in baseball, again despite game 5 against the Brewers.
3) Our pitching in general, has a lot of depth. We will have injury replacements, trade chips, or both.
4) Good and bad, most of our prospects are pitchers and outfielders in the high minors ready to be utilized by the big club.
5) I know it is early, but in both spring training and regular season, I think our fundamentals, i.e. base running and fielding, etc. look more sound. Granted we were near the bottom of baseball last year in this category, so improvement was easier. The addition of Oquendo and Mcgee has helped quite a bit.
6) The likelihood of another big trade at the deadline enhances with our depth. Perhaps not Archer or Donaldson, but likely someone else that is off the radar as of now.I think 90 wins is possible now, barring many injuries. We should contend not only for the division, but the both wild cards. The key is to play head to head much better in our division than last year.
I understand Brian. Is it unusual for this time of the year to have that many unaccounted for? I also would have thought, other than Peoria, injured players would be placed on each respective teams’ DL?
I love when the minor leagues open their season. I look forward to some new faces, and like the spring season itself, there is optimism for these young kids.
I am liking Flaherty more this year also. He has a ton of movement, and that slider is a swing and miss pitch. How good he is depends on the other pitches development.
As a fan, and hopefully Leone thinks the same, you have to put yesterdays game in the rear view mirror. If this becomes a trend with Leone and Lyons, then it becomes a bigger issue. If not, just win the series today. I like the overall makeup of this team, and its’ depth.
After last nights debacle, I am wondering if Hicks might be tried as closer until Hollands return. Maybe it is too soon?
FYI, if anyone is interested MILB TV is a great way to watch some minor league games. It costs, but you get a lot of games for your money, in my opinion.
I wonder if Mieses will now be on Springfields roster assuming Arozarena is moving up to Memphis. Or is Mieses hurt?
I am guessing Derian Gonzalez and Arias would be sent down when Cecil comes back. I am excited to see both of them pitch at the current levels. Both could stick if they put together some good outings.
Any idea who is starting the 4 minor league games? I am thinking Hudson for Memphis? Maybe I heard woodford for Springfield?
I don’t understand how Jones has passed Helsley on the depth chart? It’s not even close comparing their 2017’s. Has Jones improved that much? Jones needs to be able to miss more bats.
So Derian Gonzalez will be in the bullpen? I thought at the end of last year that was the plan for him, and unless he stretched out in minor league camp that had not changed.
I wish Cecil had a swing and miss pitch, instead of a chase pitch. Or more giddy up on his fastball. Definitely not worth 7 mill a year at this point.
Unless he is doing well, I would rather lose Norris than anyone else on the 40 man roster. We can’t be so cheap that we start losing prospects over underachieving veterans. Besides time is on our side here, since Reyes doesn’t come back until the end of May.
And how will Reyes situation unfold? He can be on rehab while on the 60 day DL, right? So theoretically he could rehab early/mid May at Memphis. And can Reyes come back any sooner than May 28? I thought I read that is not possible.
All of a sudden our bullpen looks like it could be one of the best. Lyons, Hicks, Leone, Holland seem pretty formidable if all works out.
It would be great to see Hicks and Holland in late innings, but it would seem likely Hicks, and/or Mayers will have to be sent down when Holland and Gregerson are activated. Although cutting Norris might be a better option if those 2 keep pitching well. But Mo will probably try and milk as much of the 3 million as they can out of Norris’ year. Also, with the frequency of injuries to our pitchers, other choices may be needed.
I hope they are careful with Hicks. I hope not to have an article “Hicks arm is falling off”. I know he only pitched 5 innings today, I wonder if Weaver will have an innings limit.
