True, Kershaw is fantastic and a future hall of famer. And Bumgarner isn’t too shabby either, and if he stays healthy, he could be Cooperstown bound also. How could I forget them? Still seems like there aren’t many like those 2. As far as the Cardinals go, there is Gomber, and I like the lefty reliever Evans at AA. Pretty slim pickings for our organization.
Kind of a strange coincidence that the Padres have acquired 3 of our players recently for nothing, including a Luis Perdomo twice, once back in the day. You can’t keep everyone. And until the Ozuna trade, to a fault, the Cards were hanging on to all prospects. HOnestly don’t think Wick will make it to the majors, but who knows.

Is there a date when a team no longer has to give up a draft pick for a free agent signing? I was thinking sometime in May? Maybe that is no longer the case?
Okay, first of all, I wasn’t dinging Lyons at all. I was saying a slight ERA rise of 2.8 to 3.10/3.20. ANd as far as his career relief ERA that doesn’t have much bearing on things, as he had NEVER been a closer before. There is one thing to be facing a second string left handed catcher in the 6th down 6-0, and then having to face Joey Votto with the bases loaded and the game on the line. I like Lyons very much, and hope Brians stats on his improvement continue.
Yes, the bullpen was terrible, 29 bullpen losses, almost 1/5 of the games played, is terrible. When Bowmann is near leading the league in appearances there is something wrong. He shouldn’t have been overworked and put in many of those situations, but with Matheny afraid to use Oh, Rosenthal, Cecil, Broxton, Siegrist, etc. because they blew so many games he was the only choice. The Cubs relievers had 22 losses, and outside of wade Davis I wouldn’t consider last years Cubs bullpen very good either. But I would rather have had 22 losses, obviously.
Lastly, the career ERA of the new bullpen additions compared to ones departed via free agency is New = 10.99 and old = 10.14. Gregerson has 66 saves in 112 opportunites. Not an encouraging percentage. Comparing the end of 2017 to now is the only fair way assess things, as I could care less about what Broxton/Siegrist/Socolovich did during the season. They are gone, thankfully. How are these changes upgrades? Basically the Cards are too cheap to go out and get anyone after being burned by Cecil, Leake, Fowler etc. That said, I am still rooting for the new guys because I have to, and honestly I wouldn’t mind being wrong.
It seems funny that 2 years ago David Price signs a 7 year, 217 million dollar deal. Are Darvish and Arrieta only 2/3 as good? No, but I think spending needs to be curtailed, I just wonder how long before some owner breaks from ranks and goes over slot, as it were.
Whatever you do Mo, please don’t sign Arrieta, unless on a 1 year deal. I only see that as a 1% chance of happening. Or after the 1 year throw a QO to him.

Cecil CecilAssuming Reyes isn’t a reliever on opening day, how can we say our bullpen is any better than last year, a year in which it was terrible. I could project Cecil should be better, but I also could see Lyons being worse, just due to the fact he had a really good year, and would be bound to fall off a little. And they should start Helsley, HIcks, Hudson, and Greene as along as they can for their ceilings. And with a starting staff that potentially won’t get deep into games adds another twist to this.
I think Valera should be the one to go. I like Munoz a lot. And Schrock is better than Valera. Munoz should be first man up if they need a middle infielder. But as in the Gregerson signing, it may be days before the physical, so the decision may not be quick.
Our front office fails us again!! Cubs sign Chatwood, Morrow, and Darvish, while we get Gregerson and Bud Norris. I am sure the Cubs are quivering with that last move. If we were going to overpay someone, I would not have chosen Norris. ON the trade front we do well, but our free agent choices leave a lot to be desired. (And needed to be better) All this brave talk from the FO about upgrading the bullpen. It was just talk, unless the kids come thru for us.
The needs seem to be power and left handed pitching. I sure hope they draft a 3rd baseman or outfielder with power, as a first baseman only, limits potential. For a team (not on 40 man roster) to have so few lefties is disturbing. I can think of only 3 in AA or better, who look interesting, Gomber, Evans and Littrel. But Littrel, who I was high on last year, had the suspension and was not particularly good in 2017. If it wasn’t for the lack of lefties he may not even be around in 2018.
Sleepers for us. Sort of like Ryan Helsley for me the last few years. Someone who should be ranked significantly higher. Or others who will be in next years rankings.
Unless Molina gets hurt, I think Carson Kelly should start the season in Memphis. Maybe Pena can be the backup until midseason. My thinking is that Kelly’s trade value is higher that way, and it would keep him sharp. Call him up in May or June, or trade him near the deadline.
How about Huston Street? Not sure of his health if he is anything like he used to be. Probably get him on a minor league contract if he is rehabbing.
Roriguez seems to have very good potential. Hopefully he and Lopez play in Peoria in 2018. Maybe Oviedo and Seijas can be their battery mates.
I have always wondered why a team wouldn’t put emphasis on left handed pitching, at least as a tiebreaker in making choices. 3 things mostly coveted would have to be power, speed and left handers. Especially for the current state of our farm system, which we have only 1 left hander who stands out, Gomber. It is a quality that always be traded, i.e. Marco Gonzalez.
I do not agree with their grade on the Cards pitching prospects. No other system can boast the starters (and future relievers from the group) we have at AA and AAA. With Alex Reyes and Flaherty having not graduated from rookie status yet also. It is a little troubling what is at high A and below, but again we are surely not the only team with gaps in their system. Also pitchers like Seijas and Oviedo along with 3 picks in the first 39 in this coming draft should help as well.

GonzalesThis is before injuries which surely would change these names. This is an exciting group. It puts Gant and Poncedeleon in the bullpen, which the latter may be a very good fit in that role. Also assuming Derian Gonzales isn’t moved to the pen where he ended 2017. He could be Springfields closer.
If I wanted to go to Spring Training one of these years, is there a better option, website, group, than going thru the Cardinals? They seem pretty expensive.
The Grichuk trade works for 2 reasons 1) We get a top notch reliever, which we are in dire need of, and 2) We will give O’Neill and/or Bader playing time. Even Garcia may make his debut in 2018. I tire of the new age player who swings for the fences on every occasion. O’Neill might fit that description now, but I am hoping he will improve. Good luck Randall, but I believe this helps prune the vines so others can grow.
So who is saying this team, as constructed can win 90 games? Unless we get amazing contributions from rookies or unknowns, this team cannot win 90 games. Gregerson is our closer, and we pass on Reed at reasonable years and price. How much cheaper can we get a closer than 2 years/18.5 mill?
I have always wondered how Homer Bailey would do if moved to the bullpen. I believe his velocity is still there. But 2 things stand in the way, 1) The huge money owed to Bailey, and 2) likely the Reds would never deal him within the division. At this point I would take a Huston Street signing, even though he may be washed up.
I’d like to know what average Carpenter hits in different spots in the lineup. I can’t recall any player that hits so well in the leadoff spot but nowhere else. Also, is he sub .200 versus the Cubs? I sure hope he takes advantage of having Ozuna bat behind him, as one of the lineups they have proposed.
