Latest BA top 30 is out. Wetherholt graduated. Rodriguez moves to number 1, Doyle 2, Baez 3, Franklin 4’ Cinjtje 5, then Crooks, Bernal, Fajardo, Mathews, Mathews p, Roby. Interesting new addions are 23 Gurevitch, 24 Cruz, (a thin, tall youngster from FCL), 25 Odle, 26 Dos Santos.
Mendoza is an under the radar kind of prospect. His bat has improved a lot the last few years. While he may only be a utility guy, he could be valuable if we get an infielder injured. Plus he has a little pop and is right handed. It might take a couple injuries, as Prieto is already on the roster, and Jordan could be added in that scenario as well.
Wow, strong performances by Doyle and Franklin last night. They both seem to be on track again. The last 2 starts Doyle’s secondaries have looked much bettter. Kind of wondering about about Clemente. 7 Ks in 3 1/3 innings. I thought I read that he is among our minor leaguers harder throwers. Any chance he could be stretched out as a starter? I always thought he might be fastball only pitcher.
Great to see Rodriguez get off to a fast start at Springfield. He has to be our number 1 prospect now that Wetherholt has graduated.
I don’t see Pallante being worth much, although I would like to see Mautz, Mathews, or Dobbins replacing Pallante in the rotation.
I’m still not liking some of Olis moves. And I think the team is better due to trades made. We have gone away from veterans, and utilizing youth. Walkers amazing turnaround has been instrumental in our success. Wetherholt has been very good so far too.
I think we need a third baseman, an outfielder or 2, 2-3 starting pitchers and relievers. There are many holes on this team.
Several posters have suggested that we could trade May, but I don’t think we’d get anyone more valuable. I wonder too if we hang on to Romero. If Svanson was pitching better maybe Romero could be dealt. But right now Romero and O’Brien have been our best relievers.
Rodriguez should in no way be traded. With Wetherholt graduated, Rodriguez is now are top prospect, although Doyle has been really good the last 2 starts. As far as help from the minors, maybe Dobbins, Mautz or Mathews could have impact.
I would exercise caution when thinking about buying at the trade deadline. I’d love to see us do well, but our stats dont support it. We are 21st in runs scored, 12th in batting average, 13th in obp. The pitching stats are worse, 17th in era, 21st in whip, 29th in strikeouts, 22nd in bullpen. I’m just thinking we’re improving, but we have a long ways to go. Walker, Wetherholt, McGreevy have terrific, but Gorman, Scott, Stanek, Svanson, Pallante need to improve or be replaced.
Can’t believe Wetherholt isn’t first. He’s a 2 way player. Stewart is not. And a starting pitcher plays every 5 days.
FCL Cards up 7-1 with 3 homers by the youngsters. Peyton Graham, who is returning from Tommy John surgery last year, has been excellent in 2 starts so far. He might get moved up to Palm Beach by the end of the year. His move might coincide with Van Dyke getting bumped up to Peoria.
It’s only a matter of time before the bullpen costs us games. How do we have a winning record with only 3 reliable relievers? Having Fernandez and Roycroft as depth isn’t saying a lot.
The starting pitching, with the exception of Mcgreeevy and Liberatore, hasn’t been great so far either.
I think Gastelum and Rajcic could help our bullpen. They both have had strong starts for Memphis. Also, I’d like to see Watson promoted to Memphis.
Again, I wouldn’t trade O’Brien unless overwhelmed. Trading Romero is complicated by our success this year, but I still would do it if the return was good. We’re not going anywhere this year, so get what you can for TRomero. He should be in demand. O Brien is too valuable due to control issues. Closers throwing 100 plus don’t grow on trees.
ATM, I saw that Stewart is 1 for his last 13, at least. McLean for the Mets would be another contender. Who wins ROTY when comparing pitchers to position players. Position players have more impact, IMO.
I think anyone questioning JJs defense before this weekend has had the question answered. He made a couple great plays. Also, he shortly will have his prospect status ended.
I thought Hjerpe was supposed to have a normal spring training. Maybe setbacks? And. Would think maybe Roby might pitch in relief in the AFL? I doubt it, because I’m not aware of anyone repeating that league. Or maybe he can pitch a few innings in Memphis.
I like rotating Prieto, Torres and Saggesse (and Jordan, although he isn’t on the 40 man roster) being rotated between Memphis and the Lou. Whoever performs the best gets the most playing time. I would hope they give them some playing time too.
And as far as Church playing center field, I don’t see him as a negative fielder. He has good range, and a very good arm as has had many assists. It’s just too bad they don’t have a right handed hitting center fielder. If you can have Fermin and Saggesse in center, you are growing desperate.
If he had done well with Memphis I’d say give him another chance. But he did not. I’d rather add Gastelum. In fact I never liked this Rule 5 selection. Guys like Murphy, who was added in the minor league phase, are fine. There are no worries about returning them.
