In theory our offense is low power and our pitching not great so Urias’s defense makes sense. No idea what Jordan looks like defensively. We need to avoid stuffing all the bats in with disregard for other aspects of the game. On the other hand, we need to see what guys can do.

I agree that we don’t need 8 DH’s on the field but if Blaze Jordan can only play 1B or DH then he is in the wrong organization. We need to find out.

Church can play CF. The only reason he is not playing it is that they keep playing Scott there.

I wouldn’t mind Church in CF and Scott with his questionable arm in LF. If Church checks out, Noot can take over LF.

Again, I wouldn’t trade O’Brien unless overwhelmed. Trading Romero is complicated by our success this year, but I still would do it if the return was good. We’re not going anywhere this year, so get what you can for TRomero. He should be in demand. O Brien is too valuable due to control issues. Closers throwing 100 plus don’t grow on trees.

Yeah the trade deadline is going to be interesting if we are still in contention for a playoff spot. Most likely the Cardinals will stick with their guns and do some selling but they might try to sell and buy at the same time.

Dustin May: He will likely be traded since he is a free agent to be.

Jo Jo Romero: Same as above.

Lars Nootbaar: He could be traded but then again they may wait until the offseason (after the lockout) in order for him to demonstrate he is fully recovered from his injury.

Riley O’Brien: This one could go either way. On the one hand he is cheap and under control for four more years so he could still be around when the team is ready to contend. On the other hand he is 31 and his trade value will probably never be higher. I am with C27 in that I would listen on him but it would have to be a very strong offer. If Edwin Diaz is still on the IL the Dodgers may be interested.

If the Cardinals try to buy some players I doubt they would go after any pending free agents but if someone is offering a young player with multiple years of control and at a positon of need they might listen.

Another possibility will be promotions from Memphis. It will be interesting to see how Baez, Torres, Crooks, Jordan, Mautz, Mathews, Dobbins, Hansen, Rajcic, and Gastelum are doing in mid-July.

Several posters have suggested that we could trade May, but I don’t think we’d get anyone more valuable. I wonder too if we hang on to Romero. If Svanson was pitching better maybe Romero could be dealt. But right now Romero and O’Brien have been our best relievers.

Yes they have been C27. It really comes down to how much do the Cardinals really want to win this year. Their public comments suggest that they are sticking to the blueprint of trying to acquire as much young talent as possible which would mean trading away older players. There are going to be some interesting decisions made if we keep winning.

I was looking more at the Rays as they really need a catching improvement to help them now. Crooks would be very attractive to them as he is basically ready and is a major improvement over Fortes.

I mentioned Brody Hopkins in another thread since I just saw he was highly rated and upper minors, but his BB% is scary looking at him. The player I like looking at their org more is Theo Gillen. I liked him at the draft in 24 but not for as high up as the Cards picked. He has a good hit tool with a little pop and can play CF. Him and Crooks are rated around the same as prospects and the deal helps the Rays compete this year.

You might be right ATM. The Rays current catching tandem of Fortes and Feduccia are average but not terrible. Three of their top 20 prospects are catchers according to MLB.com but none appear to be as MLB ready as Crooks. I really don’t know if the Rays view catching as an area of upgrade. Their might be better fits out there.

I don’t get why we stay with Pages instead of giving Crooks an extended try.

The Rays catching duo has been one of the worst by value delivered this year and that is with Feduccia playing a little better in a part time role. Feduccia has been horrible the rest of his big league career.

Bling I would rather see Crooks soon at C instead of Pages as well. But I think roster construction that still leaves is with 3 C as Herrera has done a good job handling his part of the staff.

I would go as far as saying all 3 of the current catchers, Herrera, Pages and Pozo, do an acceptable job filling the role they are assigned to fill on the current roster. Whether we need the Pozo role rather than some other role is a separate question. So getting Crooks up here and on the field regularly isn’t about replacing a subpar performer. That makes it hard, but I feel like they need to do something pretty soon.

The Fortes/Feduccia combo have a 2026 WAR of 0, which is the exact same as the Pages/Pozo combo. Also, the Rays number 3 prospect, number 12 prospect, and number 19 prospect are all catchers. It sounds to me like the Cards and Rays are in a similar situation except the Cards catching propsects are a little closer to being big league ready.

I don’t like trading with the Rays because they rarely lose. Perhaps Bloom will have better luck since he is a Ray alum.

I think that having 3 catchers now is unnecessary. Especially when when Crooks represents a major offensive upgrade. I don’t know where they’d play him, but Jordan could get some ABs.

The reason they roster 3 catchers (aside from Pozo being a good team guy who doesn’t complain about playing time) is that when Pages catches, Herrera isn’t available as a backup because he’s the DH and they don’t want to give up the DH. You could argue that Torres has some catching experience (although it’s been awhile for him) and he could do it if necessary, but presumably he has no pitch calling experience at this level and isn’t even familiar with our pitchers.

Aaron Judge out for six weeks with cracked rib. Yankees one game behind first place Jays. Yankees loaded with pitching prospects. If Nootbaar impresses after he gets back on the field, does Bloom want to trade him?

Mud, I like that idea. The short porch at Yankee or Fenway, where he would play a majority of his games, might help Nootbaars hit 20-25 homers. And it seems the Yankees had interest in him, supposedly, during the off season. I would like a low minors starter, and a lefty reliever for him. That way trading Romero might be possible.

I just wonder if we would be buyers. If the right deal came along. Granted, we aren’t trading any of our top prospects. Before the season started I thought we’d be sellers. Now, I’m not sure if we’ll trade Romero. I think we should try and trade him and Nootbaar. Now that we have Church, and with Baez in the STL outfield in the next year. Now, we don’t have to trade Nootbaar, as we have control for one more year, but Romero is a different story. He is a free agent after this year, and we likely couldn’t afford him any way.

After thinking more about it I am convinced the Cardinals are going to be sellers even if they are in playoff contention. Bloom has dropped several not so subtle hints that they are going to continue with the original plan despite the success of this year’s team. I could see them trading May, Jo Jo, O’Brien and Noot. I doubt if Urias or Stanek would have much value. I think the Cardinals trade deadline acquisitions will be promotions from Memphis. Guys like Mathews, Mautz, Gastelum, Baez, and Jordan could be moving up.

If they do trade O’Brien I still think a logical fit would be the Dodgers. I don’t know when their closer Diaz is set to return but O’Brien would be a good fit for them regardless. I really hope the Cards keep O’Brien but with the Dodgers having such a highly ranked farm system it would be interesting to see who we could get.

What about extending Romero now, or after the season? He’s been our most reliable late inning reliever. He won’t be easy to replace and not having him will cost us some wins.sw

Gscottar – I think you are correct in both that the Cardinals will be sellers and who they might sell. I do think Noot may stay until the offseason. That just depends on his value at the trade deadline. Call it 50/50 on him. I would also consider Crooks, Fermin, or maybe Pages as options to be moved. I think Stanek may have some value. He’s pitched better lately and relievers with high octane stuff peak in value at the trade deadline. But you’re right on Urias likely not having much of any value.

The Cardinals already have a very impressive farm system even before this year’s MLB draft. Time to start building a team. Extend Walker, Wetherholt. Wynn.

Another name who could be traded is Pallante. He may only get us a lottery pick, but the roster spot is valuable when several prospects from Memphis may be added to the 40 man roster. The only condition would be that Mathews or Mautz are ready to be the 6th starter.

I saw a Fansided article suggesting a trade for Kelly, #7 prospect for the Pirates for Romero. Not sure if this possible because of lack of wanting interdivisional trading. And I really don’t view the Cards as serious playoff contenders, but is that how our front office views us. I say you should make that deal, or sometung like it. A player that is going to walk should be dealt, if there is a reasonable offer. Now on the other hand, I think Nootbaar will not be dealt due to Scott being sent down. If the FO is demoting Scott they must like Nootbaar and Torres more than him, at least for now.
