Do you send him back without another chance with StL? His rehab is about up so something must be done.
May 1, 2026 at 6:35 am #306321If he had done well with Memphis I’d say give him another chance. But he did not. I’d rather add Gastelum. In fact I never liked this Rule 5 selection. Guys like Murphy, who was added in the minor league phase, are fine. There are no worries about returning them.
May 1, 2026 at 7:06 am #306322There aren’t any good options right now so Pushard may be it as a placeholder. Unlike “27”, I am opposed to Gastellum. He does not appear to be ready. While he may do better than Pushard, I’m still in favor of getting better long term results as opposed to short term sacrifices.
Right now, the options basically are:
1) Pushard. He’s probably bad and has been bad throughout. He’s nearing the end of his rehab and cannot be optioned.
2) Roycroft. Also mostly bad although potentially a little better than Pushard.
3) New lefty they just picked up. I have no idea on him but he’s been bad so far this year and my assumption is they will work to fix him first.
4) Return Pushard to Miami and add someone else to the 40-man. There aren’t a lot of options that make sense if you’re focused on long-term development. Shuster could return but he’s been terrible since passing through waivers. The starters need to keep starting for depth purposes. I could see an argument for Rincon who will be a free agent again after this season so they could try him just to try him. However, he hasn’t even been at AAA long. Rajcic could have a similar argument for him with slightly different circumstances than Rincon. Or maybe Blewett would make sense as a placeholder.
I think I’d return Pushard and promote Blewett. But in this case, I don’t think there’s an obvious good choice.
May 1, 2026 at 7:23 am #306323The new lefty was just optioned wasn’t he? He wouldn’t be available yet would he?
May 1, 2026 at 7:43 am #306324He’s available. Just picked up on waivers.

04/27/26 St. Louis Cardinals claimed LHP Luis Peralta off waivers from Colorado Rockies.
04/27/26 St. Louis Cardinals optioned LHP Luis Peralta to Memphis Redbirds
May 1, 2026 at 8:36 am #306326Maybe it does work like that. I didn’t think we had to use an option to put him in the minors right when he’s claimed but maybe so. Either way, I don’t think Peralta would have been called up. It will likely be Pushard. But I think I would choose Blewett if it were me.
May 1, 2026 at 8:58 am #306328There aren’t any good choices for relief help.
May 1, 2026 at 11:03 am #306331New guy Peralta DFAed; Shuster back on the roster.
May 1, 2026 at 11:22 am #306334Shuster threw an inning Wednesday for Memphis and allowed 3 runs on 4 hits raising his ERA to over 8. But I guess he was freshest given that Pushard pitched the last 2 days and Blewett pitched yesterday. I’m not a fan of this choice, but like I said earlier, they didn’t have any real good options.
May 1, 2026 at 11:48 am #306339Shuster threw an inning Wednesday
He made it through an inning without walking anyone. So did Roycroft who is already on the 40 man. I guess they wanted a lefty up more than they wanted to keep the new guy.
May 2, 2026 at 11:00 am #306433The #stlcards have promoted RHR Jason Savacool from High-A Peoria to Triple-A Memphis. The 23-year-old had a 5.87 ERA in five relief outings with the Chiefs. pic.twitter.com/tXYydMUFpA

May 2, 2026 at 1:19 pm #306446What is to be made of Savacool’s move?
May 2, 2026 at 1:32 pm #306449Savacool at this point is org depth I think so not much to make of it from me other than they needed someone to pitch relief in Memphis with the churn they had
May 2, 2026 at 3:14 pm #306456Moving Savacool helps them to not move others too soon. It’s the others they are focused on. Savacool is just filler. He may have a tiny chance to one day throw a few Major League bullpen innings but probably no more than that.
May 3, 2026 at 3:12 am #306528The Savacool and Shuster promotions are head scratchers. Is Shuster the new Mottar?

May 4, 2026 at 3:17 pm #306607Might as well.
May 4, 2026 at 3:31 pm #306610If I recall correctly, this is their first position player transaction this season.
May 4, 2026 at 4:03 pm #306612I like it, but am kind of surprised they made an unforced move 34 games in.
May 4, 2026 at 4:06 pm #306614LOL. I talked about doing this move in the trades chat this morning as the only move that makes good sense right now. I guess Chaim was listening.
May 4, 2026 at 4:15 pm #306618I like rotating Prieto, Torres and Saggesse (and Jordan, although he isn’t on the 40 man roster) being rotated between Memphis and the Lou. Whoever performs the best gets the most playing time. I would hope they give them some playing time too.
And as far as Church playing center field, I don’t see him as a negative fielder. He has good range, and a very good arm as has had many assists. It’s just too bad they don’t have a right handed hitting center fielder. If you can have Fermin and Saggesse in center, you are growing desperate.
May 4, 2026 at 4:20 pm #306619You know what they say J, common sense is uncommon.
