BREAKING: #Cardinals and manager Oli Marmol have agreed to a two-year extension, a source tells The Post-Dispatch.
New contract for careerlong Cardinal begins after this season for 2027-2028 and also includes a club option for 2029.

March 1, 2026 at 8:10 am #301946I am not surprised by this. I have always thought they would keep Marmol though the rebuild.
March 1, 2026 at 8:11 am #301947I neither agree nor disagree with this extension.
Why now though? I guess it’s a real love fest between Marmol and Bloom.

jj-cf-stlParticipantYadi for manager just took a detour, wonder if he will now?
March 1, 2026 at 8:47 am #301952If the POBO and the field manager have a good working relationship, I think that’s a good thing. So in that light, I will give Oli a reset. He’s the manager thru the rebuild. If his game day decisions don’t improve, we replace him when it’s time to compete.

jj-cf-stlParticipantYou know Oli fits Bills budget, or he wouldn’t be here either 🙉
March 1, 2026 at 9:18 am #301958Not an Ollie fan but I trust Bloom.
Didn’t like a lot of his ddecisions but how many of those decisions were really Mo’s?

Cardinals Extend Manager Oliver Marmol’s Contract Through 2028
March 1, 2026 at 11:00 am #301963I never thought the Cardinals would bother with the manager situation this year, which is probably going to be a very mushy season, but giving him another two years? I foresee a lot of heartburn ahead.
March 1, 2026 at 12:35 pm #301966Terrible idea.
March 1, 2026 at 12:45 pm #301967Glad to hear it. Otherwise Molina would be a distraction all season. This alleviates that. Good move. Focus on the players rather than the coach.
March 1, 2026 at 2:37 pm #301972We all knew this was coming.
The BFIB needed a scapegoat through this. Even if they already knew we were in rebuild mode.
March 1, 2026 at 4:00 pm #301973There’s been a lot of manager churn in MLB in recent years. There are a few really good ones probably, none of whom would want to come here. The rest are just guys. Marmol has several years of experience now and he is out from under the thumb of Mo and his crowd. I feel like he will be ok through the roster rework over the next couple years. We will see where we stand then. Think of him as a pretty good prospect who might develop given a chance with the new system. I wish him well.
March 1, 2026 at 5:07 pm #301976At this rate I’d have to say that there’s a really good chance that he’ll be fitted for one of those tacky red sport coats just before they retire his #37 jersey. He’s undoubtedly the face of the franchise for this era of outstanding Cardinal baseball.
March 1, 2026 at 8:07 pm #301979Woof….team was so excited by this they got 1 hit against the pirates today….just kidding I think
March 1, 2026 at 11:17 pm #301980Other than maybe Pat Murphy in Milwaukee, will any manager in all of baseball have greater job security than Oli for the next couple of years? What a difference a year makes. There were several occasions last season where Oli had to have been thinking that the ax was coming soon. The mere sight of Mo’s name flashing across his incoming call screen had to have been quite frightening. I bet his blood pressure dips a good 15-20 points this season over last. What a dream position to be in where your bosses are expecting you to consistently lose. Oli could go 40-122 this year and he’d still be welcomed back next season with open arms. For Oli’s sake, the worst thing he could do this year would be to flirt with a .500 record or God forbid a winning one, as that would greatly raise expectations for 2027. Yes indeed if Oli plays his cards right and does not over-preform in 2026, he’s all but guaranteed to be around for at least the next few years….and maybe much longer.

ParticipantDoesnt surprise me in the least. Just another bad move to me. I understamd it from one perspective due to the team being not ready for prime time but from my perspective i dont like it.
March 2, 2026 at 11:35 am #301999I tried to say this above but I’ll try to do it better this time.
Whether you like Oli or not, and knowing that the decision to not fire him after last season was already made (can’t take it back at this point), this decision to extend him is a good decision. They can still terminate him at any point if they want to go in another direction. All this does is push that point back from what could have been by maybe end of May this year to now roughly end of August. That’s really nothing in the grand scheme of things. The key aspect of the extension is it stops the media (and many of us fans) from constantly wondering about what Molina is doing and whether or not he’s going to be the Manager soon. That’s a cloud hanging over that the organization doesn’t want to deal with. They want the focus to be on the team and the players and not the side show that happens every time Yadi shows up. That’s a good thing. Whether you like Marmol or not – this is still a good thing for Cardinals baseball. It’s good for Yadi, good for the players, good for Marmol, and therefore good for Chaim and the team.
March 2, 2026 at 12:28 pm #302001Nice post Jnevel. Yadi just isn’t the manager for this team at this point in time. Oli is. Maybe in a couple years they flip Oli up to the front office and Yadi to the field. Cohesion in the organization right now is as important as anything.

jj-cf-stlParticipantOli will have to go out of his way to step in it this season. We’re just throwing darts at it now. Keep the runways open and pencil in the lineup by ops+ descending. Tough gig.
March 2, 2026 at 3:10 pm #302007I think this is more good than bad – keeping the field management team consistent through a lot of player changes. Had we gone the other way and traded prospects for veterans and loaded up with guys like Tucker, Verla nder, Schwarber etc and made the statement we were going after a post season berth this year, then Ollie would be better jettisoned. But with a young club looking 3 to 5 years down the road, then yeah, keep him around and see how it goes. And jnevel makes a good point about the Yadi distraction being removed.
My sense is Ollie is pretty good with the younger players, and they respect him. I have no inside look at that – just my perception.
March 3, 2026 at 11:47 am #302073With so many young guys and catching prospects, getting Yadi fully on board should be one of the best moves they made.
That being said I still feel Crooks or Pages needs to be traded when another team has an injury and gets a bit desperate.March 7, 2026 at 5:54 pm #302262It’s almost like we’re grooming Yadi to be someone else’s manager. I’m not convinced he would be a great manager, but I wouldn’t bet against him.
Remember when we groomed Joe Torre to be one of the most successful managers in MLB history, unfortunately for the Bronx Bombers.
