You could go out and get yourself a dandy super Rolls-Royce but it won’t take you anywhere if you ain’t got no gas to put in it.
I’d like to know what, in the eyes of Bloom and company, constitutes success? Does snagging the lowest hanging fruit on the wild card tree and finishing third in the division 15 games behind mean we had a successful year?
Of course, theoretically, any of the 40 percent of MLB teams that grabs one of those apples could go all the way to the world series.
But does achieving one of the 12 playoff spots in an interminable elimination system equal success? Where do the Cardinals have to finish to claim a successful year? They’ve already tried to temper our enthusiasm and lower expectations for next year and perhaps beyond by stressing parsimony. So where’s the beef?
How is Bloom going to “earn his paycheck” when he doesn’t even know how much money he has to spend and, from what he said, has not even bothered to ask.
If we are “going to play 2026 as more of an evaluation of what you have,” Then what the hell was 2025? We had 162 games to evaluate what we have! A team 19 games back, sorely lacking pitching and offense. And how is it Bloom has been around for two years and not bothered to bring up the subject of budget? Something ain’t right here.
I didn’t hear anything yesterday or today that gives me hope that 2026 will not be another wasted year. But of course miracles occasionally happen and the new guy might have a magnificent plan that will transform our fifth-place 19-games-out team into a competitive dynamo despite meager budget and uninspiring field command. Or not.
A friend and I were waxing nostalgic the other day recalling when major league baseball had.300 hitters and 20-game winners, and players rubbed dirt on their hands and bat handles.
And pitchers sometimes purposely scuffed baseballs instead of tossing out every ball that touched the ground. And home plate umpires wore mattresses on their chests. And you could get a decent grandstand seat for $1.50.Can you still get Cracker Jack at the ball park?
I can’t imagine Mo has anything interesting to say.
We’ll soon see if Bloom is going to be a straight talker or another obfuscator.
A disappointing season ends, with scattered bits of enjoyment throughout.
My gut tells me 2026 will be more of the same, though my heart unrealistically hopes I’m wrong.
It looks like there won’t even be many new people to pick on and complain about. Zoot alors!
Golly, you’ve got me there Brian. I had no idea that every third baseman in the major leagues, plus a few bench sitters apparently, are better than Arenado.
Also interesting, the only Cardinal regulars lower than Arenado are Gorman and Walker, yet Gorman is the one they keep running out there to replace him.

What are we now calling 2025? Certainly not a “reset.” We didn’t reset squat. We sat around for a year with a thumb in our ear.
I guess we fattened some wallets a bit for the rich guys.
What are we going to call 2026?
I suppose we could scrape around in the minors and see if we can put together a different-looking sub.500 team. Perhaps we can call it a breathalyzer season?
Or, maybe we could bring in a bunch of new coaches. That always works, or at least gives the impression of movement …
How about trading the Clydesdales for a player to be named later?
Arenado on the decline is still better than anybody else we have or could reasonably acquire. He’s expensive, yes, but what’s that expression, something like, well, you made your bed …
Yeah, funny thing. I just rediscovered it this summer in a long conversation with my grandchildren about high school in the 1950s. You know, Stan Musial, Buddy Holly, single wing football, popcicles for a nickel.
Also loved that Gorman AB with the bases loaded, three pitches, three strikes, including one pitch that was closer to crossing third base than home plate.
I’m sure there is a long line of GMs out there desperate for a .210 hitter and mediocre fielder. That is if the bottom of the barrel has not already been over-scraped.
Does anybody know Mo’s last official day as a Cardinal employee?
Or Bloom’s first official day as POBO, or whatever he is going to be called?
I guess part of the problem is semantic. What does “rebuilding” mean?
When most folks hear that word I think they envision creating something new and better.
I don’t think they envision tearing something down then fishing around in the leftovers bin looking for some useable material.
A new coat of paint on the same shaky structure is just that.It’s always good to win. But this year, to what end? And yet, there are still people out there talking about a wild card. As Red said, hope is a dangerous thing.
I think Marmol is a below average manager struggling to make a silk purse out of a wheelbarrow full of sows’ ears.
Bikemike-announcers: I like Caray fine, despite his rather irritating laugh (uk.uk,uk). I could do without Brad Thompson whose sole contribution appears to be trying to guess what the next pitch is going to be. I like Sweeney fine and would like to see him promoted to the A-Team.
Oh Pugs, get to the game if you can! You’re lucky to be close enough. Even if they’re having a crappy season, enjoy while you can. I haven’t been to a Cards game in five years when I visited my daughter in Washington and took in a couple of Cards-Nationals games with an old army buddy. MLB-TV is a reasonable substitute but being able to see the whole park all the time and not depend on some producer to decide what I see, the sounds, the smells, great.
Rah Cardinals!Gorman/Walker: You may have heard this before, but I say let them play out the season, then hand them tickets on the first Greyhound out of town.
