Kudos to Herrera for wanting to be a team player but I am still skeptical about moving him back to C. Another factor is injuries. He is less likely to get hurt at DH and we desperately need his bat in the lineup everyday.
Just saw something on Facebook that said DeWitt is going to open the coffers this off-season.

Rat, my guess is that the coffers are going to be closed tighter than they are now. FB doesn’t sound like a reliable news source.
For what it is worth, Carey and Thompson during today’s telecast stated that next year was going to be a reset and the team wasn’t expecting to be competitive.

The one way I could see the Cardinals trading Sonny Gray is if they were to buy two cheap pitchers with the money saved by trading Gray, leaving one rotation spot to fill (assuming they run Pallante out there again next year because he is cheap).
But I don’t see DeWitt eating $15 million to make a Gray trade attractive.
Herrera should be the DH due to his tendency to get injured. I do agree also the Cardinals need a bopper (HR hitter) in the OF. Unfortunately the Cards can’t sign any UFA, because it’s too expensive and a lot of the OF available are older 35+.
I am really not sold on either Victor Scott II or Nootbar. Nate Church was disappointing with his bat when called up, maybe he figures it out in the spring and beats someone out. Jordan Walkers regression really hurts, he was supposed to be that guy. Cardinals are stuck with him, maybe we’ll get lucky with Walker…I am not counting on it.
I agree with many others that Walker should learn to hit AAA pitching before taking a roster spot on the Cardinals. After DeWitt gets us another McGreevy type pitcher (young and high ceiling), good luck with that, he needs to add another CF outfielder. Scott 2 is a #4 OF. Not many OFers in the organization to count on.

Some more info regarding next season by Skip Carey on today’s telecast. Stated that Wilson Contreras has met with Bloom and told him he wants to be part of the rebuild.
Here is confirmation of that info:
After a lengthy meeting with Chaim Bloom at Wrigley Field on Friday, Willson Contreras said he would "like to be a part of the process" and remain with the Cardinals.

My take on Contreras, he’s a thoroughly decent person who has handled a difficult situation gracefully.
I don’t know how much he could add though. He’s a DH who can play 1B adequately. His bat would be great as part of any type of productive lineup, with a couple good power bats for him to compliment. He’s not a stand-alone bat though. I am not aware that he has effective veteran leadership qualities. He soaks up an outsize chunk of payroll. His role conflicts with Herrera and Burleson, who are younger and cheaper.
Well the mets are the latest lesson that just paying a lot of money doesnt guarantee anything. Sure the dodgers won a couple but i still think hiring the right manager, general manager who know how to build a team without having a big purse is the way to go
Yeah Willie, I’m really riding high on the Red’s bandwagon hoping they can bounce the Mets out of the post-season picture. It’s in my DNA…Haha!
I don’t know if this has been said, but I’d send Jordan Walker to Mark McGwire this winter for some hitting advice and work. It would be a last gasp effort to see if he can reach his power potential.
The next thing they should do is follow the Nolen Ryan regime with their young starters. This worked very well a few years ago for the Rangers and again for a young Astros team.
Lastly, clear the deck. They are a season or two too late, but it has to happen now. Be aggressive next year. There’s nothing to lose. And for God’s sake, don’t be afraid to trade this winter, even some of the youth.
I’d change the manager, but that’s not likely until well into the season. I hope I’m wrong and they send him and this staff packing. Start fresh all around.

Ok so, Contreras stays at 1b. That frees Burleson up to move to rf to replace Walker. I’d sure try to make a lf out of Herrera. Donovan can play third can’t he? Sagesse / Wetherhold is 2b. Winn of course has ss nailed down.
We can trade Nootbar for pitching or keep him I guess.

I can’t begin to unravel the starting pitching. I assume Gray is gone, I hope Mikolas is gone, Pallante just has to go to the pen. I think we need 3 SPs from somewhere….
I have no problem with offering up the Nootz in a trade, but what sort or calibre of a pitcher do you think the Cardinals would receive in return? I’m guessing any arm they’d get for Nootbar would be considerably less than second rate.

For the guys who follow the affiliates: wasn’t it great following the S-Cardss this season. I had a good feeling about them coming back in the Championship series. They opened the season with the rotation of Roby-Rajcic-Hansen-Mautz Henderson. Both Roby(7)(TCN 8/15) and Rajcic(23) pitched well before their promotions. Rincon(34) replaced Roby and Winquist(22) replaced Rajcic. Both were more than adequate. They worked in Lin(30) in Sept and Hence(6) but only started 3 games in June/July.
It was Mautz(17)-Henderson(12)-Hansen(27) who kept the team in 1st-place all season and then in the play-offs. Mautz was excellent starting in July and really kickass in the play-offs. He only missed one rotation start all season. IMO he is the organizations Pitcher of the Tear. Henderson and Hansen made all of their rotation spots and moved their stock up. They got consistently good starts all season…. you can look it up. I won’t give you the numbers on these guys but trust me there was a reason why they won the Texas League. I hope to see the Big Three in Memphis next season. There should be some open spots because hopefully a couple of the AAA starters will be in STL.
Bottom line: For me the Springfield successes took away some of the sting of the STL’s less than stellar 2025…. all season long.
Contreras said he would like to be back. He didn’t say he would definitely be back. Nor has Bloom said that Contreras would definitely be back. I think everything is on the table so I wouldn’t read too much into it. Personally I think they should trade him for pitching and put Burly at 1B. I like Burly much more at 1B than the OF.
