Euro what you are saying is true but I don’t know how any fan could objectively know if that applies to this situation or not.
Yep, gscott. I haven’t watched enough this year to have a feel for it. Was just making the point that minimal managerial impact on wins and losses applies to x’s and o’s — not inspiration and leadership, where impact on wins and losses can be significant.
I do think Marmol made a few unforced errors by going public with player personnel issues 2 or 3 years ago. That’s a tricky leadership path and usually not the best way to get resolution, maybe makes things worse. Add to that, you could be lowering the value of guys you might want to get rid of. Maybe Mo and BDW Jr taught Oli something there.
September 20, 2025 at 7:41 am #292739Does Bloom have someone in mind he would rather work with? That’s the question that needs to be answered. I understand we don’t necessarily need a strategic giant in 2026. But the fact Marmol is under contract next year shouldn’t be the deciding factor.
September 20, 2025 at 7:54 am #292740If it involves money it seems that it will be THE deciding factor.
September 20, 2025 at 8:19 am #292743If Bloom wants to change the staff for 2026 (because it would not be just the manager), he would need to convince BDW Jr. to eat that money. Asking to spend more for questionable return wouldn’t be the first thing I would do if I was in that job, especially coming off the 2025 season, during which the Cardinals likely lost money.
It is not impossible that Marmol and staff would be fired, but is not likely, either.
September 20, 2025 at 8:40 am #292746$ Shouldn’t be the deciding factor, but it probably is. Right now we aren’t operating like a mid-market team.
September 20, 2025 at 10:15 am #292747Somewhere recently I saw a piece that estimated the Cardinals 2024 operating income at $57M. That is really not a whole lot to work with when you consider some of that probably goes to financing and investing commitments. Thus free cash flow might be say only $30M just to make a wild guess. And that was 2024 – 2025 is probably going to be even less, although we did have Goldy off the books, and the two veteran pitchers (Gibson & Lynn). I doubt the club wants to borrow money – maybe they are already in hock more than they are comfortable with – so I think they will go with Ollie at least to start 2026.
September 20, 2025 at 12:31 pm #292748I don’t know if its been stated, but whether Marmol goes may depend upon whether Bloom can find/attract a compelling alternative. And just because we think someone is compelling doesn’t mean he does.

jj-cf-stlParticipantPoor Bill will be paying Arenado thru 2041, regardless.
What Poor Bill loses in attendance revenue may qualify him for some type of mlb welfare. He may come out ahead ($).September 20, 2025 at 2:02 pm #292751
jj-cf-stlParticipantPlayer budget
STL EOY 2024, 178mil
STL EOY 2025, 135mil

jj-cf-stlParticipantReset = minus 43mil from the player budget in 12 months. 25% of the budget went swoosh.
September 21, 2025 at 9:30 am #292788I hope that as the product on the field has gone down the toilet that – at the very least – DeWitt understands the compounding errors he has made or allowed to be made.
It took several years; maybe even a decade, to bring the organization to the state it currently sits in.

It is now beyond argument that the org has been on a downhill coast since the smart people left for Houston. I had long argued that Bill was hoodwinked and sold a handful of magic beans which he doggedly persisted in clutching, but others think his eyes were wide open and his hands on the wheel the whole time. We could argue about which is the greater indictment, but more importantly, we can argue about whether replacing his right hand man will make any difference. Is it putting a different head atop the same neck, to be swiveled this way and that?
September 30, 2025 at 11:00 am #293372Just to end the very faint hopes some were holding, Bloom confirmed today that Marmol will return in 2026.
September 30, 2025 at 11:22 am #293376Which is what I thought all along. You don’t bring in the big dog until you are ready to win and the Cardinals are obviously not ready to win. In fact I think the rebuild is just now beginning.

ParticipantWell bloom saying marmol is coming back tells me hes not worth anything already. I felt since they were going into rebuild mode it could happen cause thats the standard answer with a under contract coach but i was hoping bloom could be the answer but any general manager that wants to start their new era hanging onto the old just isnt worth his salt in my eyes.
September 30, 2025 at 5:44 pm #293394Absolutely shocked! Anything to save a buck, as some astute posters reasoned for his job survival. Have to admit that I didn’t see this coming. This team needs an overhaul……and it usually starts at the top step of the dugout. Gloom…..pardon me……Bloom is not off to the running start I had hoped.
September 30, 2025 at 7:03 pm #293396He’s quite easily the absolute worst manager in the entire Big Leagues. And if you don’t believe me, ask the players.
October 1, 2025 at 12:02 am #293407Clearly, Chaim Bloom wasn’t hired to win baseball games. As bizarre as that may sound, I believe it wholeheartedly. I think that the 2023 disaster broke the brains of ownership, broke their spirit, and they just don’t care about winning anymore, not really, not with any passion whatsoever. They don’t care enough to have a payroll commensurate with their revenues (12th-highest revenue in MLB in 2024 at $398MM), and that’s disappointing.
But much worse than that, they also don’t care enough to hire an experienced, successful manager or qualified hitting/pitching coaches — and that trio wouldn’t cost much more than a middling middle reliever. Ownership just doesn’t care. It’s one thing for multi-multimillionaires and billionaires to be cheap & greedy. That’s not surprising, much less shocking. But it truly IS shocking to me when owners of previously proud sports franchises don’t care enough about winning to make even the slightest effort toward excellence. And that’s where we are now.
So Bloom is here to continue slashing payroll, full stop. Payroll is borderline bottom 10 right now and obviously only going lower. In an era when 40% of teams make the playoffs, they’ve missed out for three years running, and it doesn’t bother them enough to do anything about it. Apparently until there’s an ownership change, October baseball under the Arch will have to be a happy accident.
Welcome to the St. Louis Devil Rays.
October 1, 2025 at 10:13 pm #293473Welcome to the St. Louis Devil Rays.
Good post, Bob Reed. That’s why I’ve been about 80% punched out the last couple seasons. They don’t care, it’s hard for me to care. And quit lying about it, then maybe I could dislike it a wee bit less. As the mouthpiece, Mo’s
doublespeak kills me.Coincidentally, it took an ownership change to transform the previous iteration of the Devil Rays into the Rays.
October 1, 2025 at 11:09 pm #293479I am with gscottar on this. You’re going to play 2026 as more of an evaluation of what you have, than trying to get to post season. So keeping some continuity in the dugout is fine.
Marmol is no great shakes. Mo always says he does a great job, but you consider the source on that.
With the roster we put out next year in all likelihood Ollie is looking for a Stan next year at this time, to try his hand at a comedy act. He has had good training at that as a baseball manager.
October 3, 2025 at 10:07 am #2935771982 willie
ParticipantBob Reed you are so spot on as always. I always appreciate you chiming in cause you make it simple enough even a fifth grader can understand it. I totally agree ownership should sell, been saying it for a minute. I think they have actually been planning to, if you remember, mike shannon said that before he stepped away from broadcasting. What i think happened is they waited too long and the product due to their own negligence had devalued. Bloom just may be hired to streamline operations and get it back on track. Not for certain, too many variables, but either way i think selling is the best way forward as a team.
October 3, 2025 at 11:01 am #293580If we are “going to play 2026 as more of an evaluation of what you have,” Then what the hell was 2025? We had 162 games to evaluate what we have! A team 19 games back, sorely lacking pitching and offense. And how is it Bloom has been around for two years and not bothered to bring up the subject of budget? Something ain’t right here.
October 3, 2025 at 11:21 am #293581Im way less cynical than you guys. We just changed leadership Tuesday. I will at least give it until opening day before making any kind of judgements. Our current roster blows. Let’s see what he does to change that.
October 4, 2025 at 3:30 pm #2936581982 willie
ParticipantI dont think living in reality is being cynical. Being cynical would be the opposite of reality. Ownership has already proven its not going to spend big money. We dont have great talent coming up to save us. Keeping marmol is just another indicator they are fine losing.
