Still after considering the dead-in-the-water team with Matheny and the playoff contending run with Shildt I think it is a success because there is some life signs with this team.
BHC-buyers remorse on Shildt? Get real.Sure he has made a mistake or two but you can
t win if you dont hit or pitch effectively. He didnt make JMart stink for most of September or Carp forget how to hit or the pitchers to run out of gas and forget how to throw strikes.Yes it stinks likely not going playoffs again but Shildt got this team to show some heart and make a big run.Unfortunately it looks like Cards just are running out of gas a bit too early.I certainly dont agree with all Shildts choices but he did well and how anyone can say this team hasn`t made a big turnaround since Matheny and some others departed is just being plain hardheaded.Damn .Damn.Damn.Crushing game .Falling down running the bases. No offense.
I think the Cards just are running out of gas.The kids are wearing down and too many vets are failing at crucial moments. It happens.Still have a chance to get in so its not over yet. Some players need to step up and put a hammer on the Brewers today.Go out fighting not with a whimper.Brewers are on fire and Cards just can`t seem to do anything right.Frustrating as hell but like I said that’s baseball for you.
16.Luken Baker 1B
17. Tommie Edman INF
18.Seth Elledge RP
19.Justin Williams OF
20.Evan Mendoza 3BSaying JMart has no errors since May 28 in RF is like saying ” I wouldn
t have had that wreck if that other car hadnt been on the road”.Once again stats dont tell the whole truth about JMarts fielding ineptitude at 2 positions. He is poor a 1B and he is poor in RF.Just because he hasnt dropped one since May doesn`t mean he has been catching everything he should either. And he earned his non-results also.
Bozo Martinez in September
75 Abs 19 Hits 1 HR 6 RBi 27 Ks 3 BB BA. 253 OBP .282 SLG .347 OPS .629.
That isn`t exactly tearing the freaking cover off the ball is it? Looks like floundering to me.This nonsense about the premature hiring of Shildt as regular manger is crap IMHO.The team liked what he was doing and the team responded well.So why the handwringing BS (second guessing?).Cards are 40-24 with Shildt as manager…what the hell is wrong with that? Beats the hell out of the 47-46 with Matheny.Sure Shildt has made some rookie manager mistakes(show me a manager who doesn
t ever have a move backfire). It happens.Sometimes the players just dont get the job done..Carpenter has been a non-factor for the last 3 weeks,JMart has floundered quite a bit and some rookie are wearing down and some vets are not getting the job done.Still with Shildt as manger and some timely promotions and deletions this team revived and made baseball fun again. With a youthful core and a return to health by several injured players the Cards should be a solid team in the playoff hunt again.Staying in the Playoff hurt with the amount of season ending and lost time to key players has been tremendous.Who can say this hasn`t been a good ride compared to the humdrum previous play of the team.No matter what happens from this point on it has turned into a turnaround season .That tells me that there is something to look forward to next season also.11.Lane Thomas OF-power,speed combo
12.Genesis Cabrera LHP-hard throwing lefty
13.Tommie Edman-INF- switch hitting player who hit .300 at AAA and AA and stole 30 bases and has a 87 K/43 BB makes good contact and versatile.
14. Luken Baker 1B-21 year old 1B hit over .300 coming off serious injury and has decent BB/K rate.Expect him to rise thru the system quickly
15.Seth Elledge RHP-got taste of AAA.Between AAA and AA he had 13-15 saves 55 ip 74 Ks 21 BB.8.Lane Thomas OF
9.Gensis Cabrera LHP
10.Tommie Edman INFYeah,Nice.Big pitching by Cmart and Walkoff by O`Neill.Nice.
Memphis OF next season could look like the 2018 version.Arozarena, lane Thomas,Adolis Garcia and Justin Williams.
Nyquis-there are several 40-man spots that will need to be addressed I agree.Wainwright will get his back.Norris,Ross both gone IMHO.I think Bowman gets to stick around because he can help when healthy. I wonder if Wisdom has shown enough to stay on the roster.I think Cecil is traded and I think Tyler Webb is fringe roster guy.Adams FA.I have doubts about Greg Garcia staying on the roster.I do think Justin Williams sticks because he is young and is a LH bat.
Nice article Brian.I still think it is foolish not to have all your position players available ( Justin Williams,Edmundo Sosa). It might be a longshot but having a couple of extra guys in case of a extra inning game or a blowout then you could give a little more rest to a veteran who is wearing down or just to have another LH pinch-hitter or backup glove man.
The ability to stay healthy enough to play a full season certainly helped.I think the potential has always been there but he couldn`t stay on the field .
September 21, 2018 at 12:02 am in reply to: Trade Ideas/Acquisition Ideas/Non-Cards Rumors – 2017-2018 #70092Keep Flaherty.Cards have Montero coming up the system in possibly 2020.ZI would be reluctant to trade any young pitching right now because of the uncertain staus of Wacha,CMartinez,Weavers poor season.Gant`s inconsistent season.Gomber has barely a half season experience in the big leagues.Too many question marks with pitching staff to trade SPs.
#7 Lane Thomas…I like the power speed combo and the potential.
And you have to get a real freaking chance also.A random AB every week or two with a start every three weeks isn’t exactly getting a fair chance or consistent playing time.Judging Kelly on his very limited chances is premature and foolish IMHO.
Kelly also got injured right after Molina. So figure that into the equation. He has never gotten more than a couple of weeks chance in the big leagues.
Lane Thomas never stayed healthy enough to play a full season. He stayed healthy this season.I like this kid and think he will pass other OF prospects and be option sometime next season in Stlouis.(looking over your shoulder Adolis?)
Nice win.Gomber and bullpen get the job done.8-1.Not pretty but counts .Clutch hits save the day too.
Yes .Great win.Now get some reinforcents from Memphis.
Paging Tyler O
Neill,Paging Tyler ONeill………put out a APB for him.Just letting off some steam.please do vote for who you feel. That
s the purpose of this voting process.I really like Montero and his potential but I think Knizners offense and average defense might be in play by next season sometime.Carson Kelly needs to play also………giving him mop-up innings isn`t doing anything.Montero will be challenged in palm Beach next season and I will be interested to see how he fares starting a season there. He did well in his month there so hoping he can continue to develop at 3B. -
