Cards defense butchers a couple plays in the 8th to go along with the wretched effort by the pen. Imagine that. Looking like another give away.
Can we have just one pitcher who doesn’t crap all down his legs on the mound tonight?
Yes that would be nice.
Departed the stadium after 8. Have been to six games this year, all losses. If they make the post season I’m staying put!
So Mayers doesn’t want to be the pitcher that’s not like all the others in this game. I guess they can all commiserate in collective futility tonight.
I don’t recall much about umpire Lance Barksdale until tonight. He is having an awful game. Calling time out late multiple times, questionable strike calls, calling time out before runners are on bases, etc…
Blame the rookies and Shildt.
The home ump was inconsistent but not terrible. The call on the put out at 1st was a disgrace though.
This teams wants postseason baseball it’ll have to earn it and not shot down it’s leg like tonight. Doesn’t help that the Crew have something to play for as well.
This loss is 100% on Shildt his managing has changed 100% since he was hired as permanent guy which was STUPID as heck for the Cards to do at that time, but the Cards are the best at doing dumb things lately…this game could very well be the one that keeps them out of playoffs!
You have to win this game. Up 4-3 the bullpen needs to get it done. That’s why using Brebbia yesterday made no sense he has been the best lately. Hudson, Hicks, Mayers, and Norris need to get their act together. Even if we make it to the playoffs the bullpen remains a huge weakness.
This nonsense about the premature hiring of Shildt as regular manger is crap IMHO.The team liked what he was doing and the team responded well.So why the handwringing BS (second guessing?).Cards are 40-24 with Shildt as manager…what the hell is wrong with that? Beats the hell out of the 47-46 with Matheny.Sure Shildt has made some rookie manager mistakes(show me a manager who doesn
t ever have a move backfire).It happens.Sometimes the players just dont get the job done..Carpenter has been a non-factor for the last 3 weeks,JMart has floundered quite a bit and some rookie are wearing down and some vets are not getting the job done.Still with Shildt as manger and some timely promotions and deletions this team revived and made baseball fun again.With a youthful core and a return to health by several injured players the Cards should be a solid team in the playoff hunt again.Staying in the Playoff hurt with the amount of season ending and lost time to key players has been tremendous.Who can say this hasn`t been a good ride compared to the humdrum previous play of the team.No matter what happens from this point on it has turned into a turnaround season .That tells me that there is something to look forward to next season also.Our young pitchers all have a lot of promise for the next few years but they just aren’t getting it done right now. The weight of the pennant race, innings overload, and just plain inexperience looks to be too much right now for Hicks, Hudson, and a couple of others.
Bozo Matinez has an .842 ops over the last 14 days and a 1.032 ops over the last 7 days. That ain’t floundering.
IMO the bottom line is that Martinez makes the Cards go. OK, there’s the defense thing, but the guy still is hitting well and some thought he was a one-year wonder in ’17. He still remains at the .300 level +/- and that’s better than the rest of the Cards.
I’d like to see him back in ’19, he is an exciting guy to watch at the plate. He’s good in the clutch, he loves playing here and he flat out hustles. (unlike some others)
On the Barksdale discussion… I rarely complain about the umps but the guy was flat out terrible last night. He didn’t even give back a close call that he missed. He just had a bad night, because if he umps that way regularly, he’d be out of MLB.
It’s not often that an ump is brought up in the comments here, but he was noticeably not up to MLB standards.
We have seen that the young pitchers can be sensational. we have also seen that they can react like rookies.
I hate walks. How many runs did they get due to walks?
The Cards don’t have the go-to hitter like Yelich or Votto. The best we have may strike out three times tonight. We are horrible at moving runners around the bases.
We have matured a bit earlier than I had thought. I didn’t think we would be in the pennant race or wild card race, the odds being that we might make it into the human race. We are doing better than I had hoped, especially with Carpenter and Wong hitting zero for April and Carpenter pretty much hitting zero for September.
If I may, I would like to apologize to both Lance Barksdale and Poodle lovers everywhere for my rude post. In my defense, I had terrible nightmares all evening about that ball eluding Jose and Brewer players galavanting around and around….and around the bases. In my dream, instead of counting sheep, I counted 23 Brewers scoring as a result of Jose’s terrible miscue. And on the back of each Brewer touching home plate were the words “Barksdale Loves The Rockies!” Needless to say, I was in a sour mood when I awoke this morning and fired off that hasty, ill-advised, insensitive post.

That isn`t exactly tearing the freaking cover off the ball is it? Looks like floundering to me.Love Jose, but he belongs in the AL. How many World Series winning clubs have you seen over the years that had a simply atrocious defender playing most every game? Answer: None I can think of.
