That feels like a completely deflating event that this team just will not come back from. It wouldn’t surprise me if they lose out.

Last chance for O’Neill. Ball called low, slider for a whiff, another one way outside swung at, then the predictable whiff. 2-1 Brewers as they eat the Cardinals lunch once again.
The bottom of the eighth described the whole series. Fell flat on our face. Now let’s add Donaldson and a mid tier bullpen arm or two and do it again
The Dbacks are beating the Dodgers. If they win, the Dodgers will be the 2nd wild card and the Cardinals would be one back. Either way, a sweep in Chicago is probably needed and two wins is the absolute minimum. I’m not sure that’s even possible.
Not a good year in our games with Milwaukee. The one I recall was early in the season up there when we lead by one with two out, and they stunned us with back-to-back homers. Had we closed that one, this series would not have hurt as much, although it still might have been a back-breaker.
It pretty much gets down to tomorrow’s Rockies/Phillies game. If the Rox win that (assuming they win tonight, which it looks like they will), they will be two up with three to play, or a magic number of two.
That should get them in, as we likely will not sweep in Chicago and they should be able to get at least one at home against Washington.
Very bad game and series. I was at the game on 13 Jul (9-1 loss to Reds) that prompted the MM firing. Time now for another house cleaning.
Specifically, the Cards lost the season series to Milwaukee again, 8-11. It is time to face the reality the Cards are again/still the third-best, and third-worst team in their division.
In a way the difference between the Cardinals and Brewers comes down to which former Marlin each team got. Yelich has been much better than Ozuna in 2018. Yelich might be the NL MVP in fact. They also made a good move adding Cain.
But the real difference in the two teams is the bullpen. Milwaukee has guys who throw strikes, and keep the ball off the middle of the plate. St. Louis has guys who cannot find the strike zone.
As terrible as the umpires have been this series (and all season), they didn’t cause the bullpen to crap their pants and give up 12 runs last night. They didn’t cause Gyorko’s incompetence with a bat. They didn’t cause the Cards to not get hits. And they didn’t cause the Cards to have the worst damn defense in MLB by a mile.
Am I missing anything?
Not much, I guess. This team reflects leadership. Mo and above do next to nothing to help at deadlines, wait forever to fix obvious weaknesses, and double down on past failures. The best “fixes” they made were addition by subtraction (i.e. getting rid of their own past screw ups). Players reflect the “do little” approach when it counts most, just like the execs. It seems like the “best” player’s main contribution the last month has been to hope for a a walk or two every now or then — seemingly frozen in indecision like leadership. Sorry, that’s not gonna win a championship, and evidently won’t get you above 3rd worst in the division. What a way to thank 3 million paying customers! They were awful when it counted most. I imagine Matheny somewhere thinking “hmmm, so it wasn’t just me.”
