This morning, BA has Cards at 55.8% and Rockies at 50.1% chance of making playoffs.
September 25, 2018 at 9:37 am #70678This week is not looking good at all. Colorado is on cruise control. All of their remaining games are at home against non-playoff teams. They have won five in a row and could easily go 5-1 the rest of the way. We probably need to finish 4-1 just to tie the Rockies, and considering who we are playing, I don’t see it happening. I’m not trying to be debbie downer but just keeping it real.
September 25, 2018 at 9:46 am #70680That is correct. If Col goes 5-1, the Cards have to go 4-1 just to tie.
September 25, 2018 at 10:09 am #70686Im a little surprised also, nate silver has the cards at 55%..
Im not sure how the metrics are measured, im sure we get a nod beacuse we control our own destiny, but maybe alot of the stats going AGAINST the rocks have to do with the fact that the phil/nats overall run diff are favorable and adjusted for coors could be better?
I think we need to get back to 1.5 up at the end of this series to have a chance, which means (obviously) that the rockies have to drop at least one against the phillies. Thats probable, but us winning these next two game certainly isnt.

stlcard25ParticipantGray’s, it’s because their rating system has St Louis as the better overall team. The Cards are rated just behind the Cubs and ahead of every other NL team besides LA in the 538 ratings.
September 26, 2018 at 9:07 am #70850At this rate the wild card game may be the Dodgers vs Cubs. How crazy is that?
September 26, 2018 at 9:54 am #70861In one day, the Cards playoffs chances dropped from 55% to 35% per BP. Even if the Cards win out, which seems a stretch at this point, they would need help to get in, having given up the lead for the second wild card.
September 26, 2018 at 10:01 am #70863
stlcard25ParticipantThey were about 80% two days ago, too. The computers don’t really take into account teams that have quit, I guess.
I would like to face the Cubs in a wildcard game more than a 5 game series, and the Brewers more in a series than a one game crapshoot. Maybe there’s the possibility still of it happening. But the team has to get it in gear, fast.
September 26, 2018 at 11:05 am #70870I think the Cards just are running out of gas.The kids are wearing down and too many vets are failing at crucial moments. It happens.Still have a chance to get in so its not over yet. Some players need to step up and put a hammer on the Brewers today.Go out fighting not with a whimper.Brewers are on fire and Cards just can`t seem to do anything right.Frustrating as hell but like I said that’s baseball for you.
September 26, 2018 at 11:33 pm #71018Dodgers play three at the Giants this weekend.
If the #STLCards make up just one game on the #Dodgers the final weekend, they would force a tie for 2nd wild-card berth which would be played Monday in St. Louis. The winner would play Tuesday in either Chicago or Milwaukee.

September 27, 2018 at 8:33 am #71031Cards current playoff odds at BP = 18.7%
Rockies = 91.8%
Dodgers = 89.4%September 27, 2018 at 8:59 am #7103580/20 between us and LA sounds about right. We need to win 2 of 3 in Chicago and they lose 2 of 3 in San Francisco just to tie for the final spot. That scenario is unlikely, but not out of the realm of possibility. A 20% chance of that happening seems right.
Here is a fun one to think about. What if Colorado, Los Angeles and St. Louis all finish at 88-74 or 89-73? It could very well happen.
September 27, 2018 at 9:22 am #71041What a thrill it is to think that the Cardinals have a chance to knock the Cubs out of first place on the last weekend of the season, while at the same time earning themselves a playoff game, and a chance for more.

ParticipantI think it’s agravatting to see the managerial comments. I’m 100% positive that if you look at positional outputs in the first half and then in the second half, you will see a tale of two halves for many of the same players ~ Carpenter, Gyorko, Ozuna, and Wong specifically are performing much better than before. I don’t see what that has to do with the manager, but to each his own. Players perform.
September 27, 2018 at 10:01 am #71056We are basically just playing the role of spoiler right now but if we can prevent the Cubs from winning the division I will be happy.
September 27, 2018 at 10:11 am #71058Oh and congrats to the Phillies for completely mailing it in. They have been outscored 34-4 against the Rockies this week. A little league team could have put up a better effort.
September 27, 2018 at 10:38 am #71062
stlcard25ParticipantIndeed, really disappointing work from the Phillies. They didn’t even put up a fight. It’s akin to tanking. Their fans should be ashamed.
September 27, 2018 at 10:59 am #71070Phillies held the Rox to 2 touchdowns last nite.
September 27, 2018 at 11:54 am #71078But you know, if Philly were coming to play in St. Louis this weekend, our Birds would be in big trouble. What is it about our storied franchise that makes everybody wants to stomp the daylights out of us? And it doesn’t matter if the Cards are down either….they’ll kick sand in our faces regardless. Especially within our own division. We are hands down….or maybe fists up, the most despised team by a long shot. And the reason for this hatred cannot be solely blamed on the Cardinals success over the years. Look at the Yankees. Sure, the Bronx Bombers and the BoSox couldn’t be left in the same room together for a mere two minutes, but the Yanks seem to get along fairly well with the Orioles, Jays and Rays. Could it be we Redbird fans are the culprits? I’m looking in the mirror as we speak and I see nothing remotely resembling anything close to what might be classified as annoying. I think the Cardinal PR department needs to be looked in to.
.September 27, 2018 at 1:35 pm #71080This is far from the only factor, but one thing that grates on other teams’ fans is the Cardinals labeling their fans as the best in baseball. Despite the negative reaction “BFIB” draws, the team keeps using it in their marketing, as recently as last night.

September 28, 2018 at 10:06 pm #71224The Rockies have clinched a playoff spot, so the last one is down to Dodgers or Cardinals.
September 29, 2018 at 5:40 am #71237
stlcard25ParticipantPlayoff odds are now at 0.9%. Basically, win out and the Dodgers lose out is the shot. Seems kind of low, but it’s still nearly impossible.
September 29, 2018 at 7:19 am #71246As Lloyd from the hit movie “Dumb & Dumber” said “So you’re telling me there’s a chance”. I like Lloyd’s odds a heck of a lot more of making hay with that little chickadee than ours of making the playoffs.

ParticipantFrom c-70 Card’s conclave:
You are probably going to hear a lot of talk about Adolis Garcia‘s pinch-running stint last night as metaphor for the second half of the Cardinals’ season. That’s because it’s about as apt as anything baseball can throw at you.
September 29, 2018 at 5:08 pm #71277#STLCards started the week with a postseason probability of 80 percent. Since then:
Tuesday: 61%
Wednesday: 39%
Thursday: 20%
Friday: 14%
Saturday: 1%— Jenifer Langosch (@LangoschMLB) September 29, 2018
