Pugs, I’ll be making my vacation official tomorrow. Just need to make the purchase official with Delta and Philippines Airlines and send off some work emails about my upcoming 2 week vacation.
In the meantime, is anyone else experiencing buyers remorse with Schildt?
Adolis Garcia didn’t want to speak to the media after falling on his behind and then walking to home plate for the out. I guess trying to get back to 3B was too difficult?
Adolis Garcia has turned down requests to speak to the media. The #STLCards PR director said Adolis is too upset and maybe will talk tomorrow.

Garcia’s blunder reminded me in a small way of Wong’s WS game-ending pick off. Certainly not the same stage, but still a big moment with huge playoff implications. You’re put in the game because you evidently have one attribute that’s crucial at that moment…you’re a good and fast runner. Then you fall on your face while running.
The guy who said to build a team around speed because speed doesn’t slump….well, he never saw Adolis run the bases.
Cards will only have themselves to blame if they miss the playoffs. They won only one September home game in nine attempts against Reds, Dodgers and Brewers. A playoff contending team must find a way to win four or five of these games when at home.
Well stated, Euro & 1964Cards! Pirates just tied the cubbies with 2 runs in both the 8th and 9th frames….go Bucs! We are out of the playoffs as far as I’m concerned, as even if our Birds were to somehow make it, it wouldn’t be pretty. Goes without saying that this is not a well oiled machine….matter of fact I think our oil spilled out about 3 weeks ago and hence our engine is totally shot. Much on the line this weekend. Even if we don’t make it, it would make my year to prance into Wrigley and make a wild card team out of those cubbies.

I feel bad for Adolis. I’m certain that no one feels worse than he does, right now. I’d like to say there’s a shot at redemption in his future, but baseball is a cruel game and it’s likely that this will end up being the straw that broke the camel’s back this season. Hopefully he’s got the fortitude to get off the mat and put it behind him in 2019.
Oh….have a great trip, Black Hills!! Keep us posted on what’s going on in the Philippines. Remember…..stay north young man….stay north!
The Cubs also clinch the playoffs tonight so at least the Cards won’t have to watch the celebration twice – unless the Cubs do it again if/when they take the division.
This is four straight years of October play for Chicago. St. Louis’ best-ever is five consecutive years – 2011-2015.
Had the Cards clinched at Wrigley, or at Miller Park, there would have been some celebrating, and I would have relished in it. Schildt is right, our team should have prevented that celebration by winning the game tonight.
One year ago, I wrote this:
“St. Louis went a dismal 2-7 to end the season, dropping consecutive series to Pittsburgh, Chicago and Milwaukee. The Cubs both clinched the division and eliminated the Cards from the wild card in final-week head-to-head wins at Busch Stadium.”
So it is looking a lot like the Cubs will again eliminate the Cards this year. That would make it three of the last four years, as no one should need me to remind them of how 2015 ended.
But the real difference in the two teams is the bullpen. Milwaukee has guys who throw strikes, and keep the ball off the middle of the plate. St. Louis has guys who cannot find the strike zone.
How true. Brewer relievers always ahead in the count; Cardinals relievers always behind in the count. Brewers challenge hitters; Cardinals nibble.

BHC-buyers remorse on Shildt? Get real.Sure he has made a mistake or two but you can
t win if you dont hit or pitch effectively.He didnt make JMart stink for most of September or Carp forget how to hit or the pitchers to run out of gas and forget how to throw strikes.Yes it stinks likely not going playoffs again but Shildt got this team to show some heart and make a big run.Unfortunately it looks like Cards just are running out of gas a bit too early.I certainly dont agree with all Shildts choices but he did well and how anyone can say this team hasn`t made a big turnaround since Matheny and some others departed is just being plain hardheaded.The really bad news is that we need to win 4 of the next 5 games, if not all 5 games, to have a realistic chance to get to the NLDS. That’s only if we tie the Dodgers or Rockies for the 2nd Wild Card. The Dodgers are a game ahead of us and the Rockies are a game and a half ahead of us.
The Cubs play 1 game against the Pirates and then the 3 with the Cardinals to finish the season. The Brewers play 3 games against the Tigers to end the season. The Rockies play 1 more against the Phillies and 3 against the Nationals. The Dodgers finish with 3 games against the Giants That’s if we tie the Dodgers or Rockies for the 2nd Wild Card.
No buyer’s remorse on Shildt, although I did not like some of his decisions in this series. Mostly game one, where at a crucial point in a close game he brings in Hudson with the bases loaded. Hudson has not been able to throw consistent strikes, and sure enough he walks Braun on four pitches to force in the run.
That is the time of a game I think Wainwright would have been a perfect option, but the club insists on him starting.
Another blunder in that game was allowing O’Neill to be announced as a pinch-hitter, then wasting him by inserting Adams when Milwaukee went to a right-hander. Statistics show the platoon advantage in that situation is not all that great. While I do not believe you should manage totally based on stats, you do not give away an AB from a hitter like O’Neill, who can potentially turn around a game.
Still, I thought management should wait until the end of the season to make the decision on Shildt. But he seems to be a solid baseball guy and we will see what he can do in a full season in 2019.
It didn’t occur to me that the Cards would be a candidate for the playoffs. I didn’t see a reliable starting lineup. Our starting pitching was not well-established. Our relief corps has been on the absentee list for about three or four years.
Then, it got worse. Reyes was injured. Wainwright was injured. Weaver was still very hittable, if he threw it near enough to the plate to hit. Our relief corps can apparently only throw strikes to the inflated strike zone that our hitters have. Beyond that, Carp and Wong looked like 200 was a Hall of Fame line.
I was surprised at midseason that we had a 500 record. Get serious. I’d never heard of any of the starters, and I think we buried those relievers in an El Paso graveyard some years ago. The more minor league pitchers we brought up, the more we won. Didn’t have the same good fortune with hitters.
How this became a team that should have won a wild card berth is shocking. No way. Well, I guess there really wasn’t, because we didn’t. But, we did better than I had anticipated, and we did it while playing the most stupid baseball I have ever seen a Cardinal team play.
#1: I’d like someone who would put together a bullpen.
#2: I’d love to have someone who would teach the strike zone—to hitters and pitchers. It’s bad enough that the NL umpires don’t know it. But, at least some of the players should know it.
#3: Fine people for walking batters, striking out, and throwing to the wrong base. Is there a Whitey Herzog clone?
