That is a man who is not long for his job. Fortunately for him, he seems to be on the right side of a group who has zero accountability.
Why wouldn’t the unsuccessful St. Louis Cardinals manager insult St. Louis Cardinals fans? Seems like a wonderful idea to me.
He sure does know how to say nothing in a whole lot of words. Not knocking him for that, because that’s what many coaches across sports do. But I learned nothing in reading that except for that he thinks he has an “elite” base running team (or at least I think that is what he was saying).
He’s no Tony LaRussa, though, when it comes to using English language, but he sure plays the victim like TLR did.

That’s a man with real job security. Then again, anyone paying attention knows he’s made many trades just to be doing something.
There are aspects of the job he’s good at, and there are others where he’s terrible. The problem is that the “building a team” aspect is pretty important. He’s not good at that.
Here’s hoping the surgery goes down tomorrow and not Thursday, because, well, I don’t want to speculate on what would happen if they are off on this report.
Okay, good. Sorry that feelers were hurt, though that is a preliminary diagnosis, subject to change after more testing. I fully admit my incompetence, though, as I am hardened after many years of watching doctors be incompetent and not nail their preliminary diagnoses.

14NyquisT, that story you posted a couple of days ago hits the nail on the head. The front office has just been collecting players and not building a team. They have no discernible vision or plan.
Now they want to be buyers and contend. Great. But to be that, you need to be just a couple of players away. What couple of players are going to push this team over the top? Regardless of the answer to that question, if there even were one, Mo will do his usual and go out and grab us a Gyorko and a Cecil and then declare victory.
I’m on the edge of my seat.
I sure hope he can, but to justify the contract, I think he has to get back to his old, dominate self. And the likelihood of that seems very remote. I’m not even sure why Mo bothers with veteran relievers anymore. His track record there is abysmal, and our kids do a fine job.
Heck, the way relievers throw now (all of them seem to be in the high 90’s), I doubt anything but a very small percentage of them will be effective after their arbitration years. Sad, but true.
We certainly had no need to sign Descalso, so anyone that wanted us to was just a sentimental fool (and possibly foolish enough to think we needed another player who can’t hit lefties and can barely hit righties). I am not shy in expressing that many fans are fools in the free agent market (which pretty much qualifies them to be GM, but I digress).
We are down this road because you didn’t enjoy my A. Miller joke. It was nothing more than that – but a pretty good answer to making fun of a bad $5 million contract is a bad $25 million contract.
I dislike the Cubs as much as anyone. But I’m not going to point and laugh at a guy whose fly is down while I’m rolling gate-down, too.

They have very different contracts, too. Red flags were abound with Miller. And the Cubs were more in a position to need to overpay for a veteran player to help complete their team.
But, yeah, let’s make fun of the Cubs for a bad signing.
Yeah, thank God Mo didn’t sign a negative WAR player this winter to a two year contract plus an option year. That would have been embarrassing.

At the very least, Flaherty needs to stop being used as a pinch runner. He may be the fastest of the starters, but he’s embarrassed himself two times in a row in a pinch running role, and that’s not good for anyone. Being fast doesn’t make you a good base runner.
I think a lot of people need to just step back and see the Cardinals for what they are – not that great. Andrew Miller is pretty much a good embodiment of the team. Was good recently. Still carries a big name, so people think higher of them they should. Will have moments where they look like the older, better version. But will regress to their mean. And overpaid.
We are what we are, and we aren’t in a very good position to sell. The team has been sloppily put together for several years now, and we are seeing the results. They are stuck in the ugly middle, laden with bad contracts.
Can they come out of it before Goldschmidt’s prime is over? We shall see, but I have my doubts if they stick with same management and their same plan.
I’ve never heard of FanSided or Matt Graves, but I can’t really argue with anything he said there.
And, apparently, neither can the person who seems to think he’s wrong and stupid.
There is no way Keuchel is worth only $3.5 million less than Fowler. 😉
The real Dallas Keuchel would have helped a lot, but it’s a gamble when you sign someone two months into the season who isn’t ready. There is a decent chance he’s not good this year. If we really want him, we have a chance this winter.
This same “joke” of a front office brought a WS title in 2011 and the best record in the NL in 2013 and 2015.
This just isn’t true. Jeff Luhnow left in December of 2011, and while Mo was able to “ride the wake” for a bit, Luhnow obviously had some special sauce that he took with him to Houston.
There are certainly a lot of factors, but I am amazed that so many people think that our front office has been doing a good enough job for the last few years. This team is rapidly heading in a poor direction. Mo had some great years, but if he were a player, he would have been released by now (unless his name rhymed with Nexter Prowler).
This team had a good season the year after his death, but the untimely death of Oscar Taveras is as good of a timestamp for the start of the demise as any. The impact of his loss is something that has compounded since his loss.
I’ll talk about the game. Dexter Fowler may not be able to catch a fly ball. He may not be able to hustle. And he may still have the same number of hits as the Cardinals leadoff man as I do this year. But he has hit two fair balls to the outfield tonight. That is real improvement we can hang our hats on!
