It is two bases from where the runners are when the throw is made when it is by an outfielder (or when it is not the first play by an infielder).
It is one base if it is from the pitcher from the rubber.
Pugs, saying that Fowler is valued way too high on that list deserves some kudos. That’s a good laugh early on Saturday for me.
That trade value on O’Neill is really inflated. I also think it might undervalue young pitching, but, otherwise, that is fascinating and probably fairly spot on.
Hard to say what far less would look like, but I’m thinking one team, for sure would be gone, if not more.
If the onus was put on the local minor league teams to pay these increases, many would go belly up. So that’s probably a non-starter.
If the onus is on the MLB teams, they’d just put the new numbers into their cost/benefit analyses, and figure out what stays and what goes. They already are doing this, rich and poor teams alike. So thinking that a 500% labor cost increase wouldn’t affect the number of players carried in the minors, short or long term, defies plain logic of that.
They would draft less players, and just trim from the bottom. Almost none of those players provide any long-term WAR anyway, but under that system, Mike Piazza is an insurance guy from Racine and not Hall of Fame catcher.
Are you okay with having far less guys in the system, though? Because that trade-off is likely (certain) when you talk about increases that large in pay.
I’d like to hear from more actual minor leaguers on that. There are a lot of musicians who choose to chase their dreams for far less.

That would represent about a 1000% raise, I don’t think that’s happening.
I can’t believe that MiLB players still aren’t paid for Spring Training. That’s absurd, and it irritates the Major Leaguers (they end up footing the bill for outings with MiLB guys – and the bullpen catchers are usually pretty well-taken care of by the MLB pitchers in camp).
The momentum is starting on this, but it will move slowly. I think we should see more teams follow the Blue Jays with their pay raises.
There were enough comments about the play. Molina is supposed to be a professional. His rant was unprofessional, uncalled for and just flat out mindless. He proved nothing more than he is a vulgar hothead. He is an embarrassment.

They don’t need a rule change here. That has already been done. This was as clear of a violation as any I have seen.
Verlander talking about the ball being juiced at the same time he is MLB leader in HRs allowed is a bit self-serving. I was laughing when I saw that.
The difference is far more in status than in the words or their direction.

Any increase in minimum wage will always lead to lower demand for labor. If they get the raise, there will be less minor leaguers. Is that trade off worth it? That’s where the debate is.
I’m sure they don’t want it, but I don’t think anyone is getting bent out of shape about Yadi checking morons online. Idiots don’t deserve the niceties of society.
Now, if Tommy Pham had cussed one time, I’m sure all here would want to ship him to a Siberian gulag, but that’s neither here nor there. We have no use for cost-controlled .800+ OPS outfielders here. We’ve got Dexter Fowler and potential.
I understand that Astros fans are going to be homers (I remember their contortions when signing the woman-beating closer while simultaneously stating they have a zero tolerance policy for domestic abuse), but how anyone can see what happened Lucroy and think that is part of the game is beyond me and an obscene statement. As I’ve said over and over again, let that same thing happen at 2B to Altuve, and see how fast people change their tune, even though the rule is not different.
Glad he’s doing the superficial things to patch things up on this, but you can certainly see why he’d be passionate about that situation. What Marisnick did is not legal in the NFL, and why it would be anything other than an auto-suspension in baseball is beyond me. He changed direction, attacked the head, and had no regard for home plate at all. Why is it that acceptable to do at home plate (and to catchers), but not at all acceptable at any other base?
MLB has a chance to make a statement with this suspension. Will they be courageous and protect guys from head injuries, or will they slap the idiot on the wrist and say boys will be boys?
I’m with Yadi, anyone defending Marisnick can @@## off. If someone did that to Altuve at 2B, I bet Astros fans would be singing a different tune.

Pugs, you referring to the time you said you dreamed of one day seeing Cox batting second for the Cardinals, but in far better prose than that?
Poor Albert has now been through this twice. Hopefully he can help the young guys on that team get through.

As though it was the uniform change that got him hitting just like he’d hit the year before in a Cardinal uniform. Some people are fantastic at carrying water.
As for Pham, he had one good year here. The rest of his tenure was spent hurt and/or running his mouth.
Pham had one full season with the Cardinals, and he went for a 6.1 WAR. For reference, Paul Goldschmidt has done that once in his entire career. Those aren’t the kind of players you trade away in the middle of a slump to make room for the Baders and Fowlers of the world especially when your front office makes a habit of slinging long-term, multi-million dollar contracts at players who habitually pull in less than half that WAR.
You’re probably right, Pugs. But do you ever get the feeling that we’re missing the catcher’s perspective here?
