Great game, very happy as I’m a Cards fan!
One of the best parts was getting Burleson and his lack of speed out of the outfield.
Now I’ve told you this before…it’s not a matter of what you think or what I think. Facts are facts. And the facts say Contreras is a far superior hitter. That’s not an opinion, it’s a fact. It’s also a fact that if you were a real man, you’d just admit you were wrong!
Contreras 2024: .928 OPS
Career: .817 OPSBurly 2024: .773 OPS
Career : .716 OPSI’m done since you have shown time and again you are too cowardly to admit you were wrong on this subject.

While neither would be a bad thing, couldn’t it be both?
LaCardFan….
I probably shouldn’t have used names because I wasn’t comparing anyone to anyone.
Point is simply this…don’t draft a mediocre player at a position of need when a great player is still on the board and available. It’s kinda like women…you may want a Catholic girl to please Mom, but don’t date a 4 just because she’s catholic when a Methodist 10 is out there and wanting you to ask her out!

I’m not against trading anyone in the right deal/package.
And yes, typically one has to give up quality to receive quality in return. With that said, it would have to be a nice deal as a I think a guy like Herrera can be so valuable in this modern era of baseball.
I feel the fastest way to screw up any draft is to draft for potential need over talent. In other words, don’t take the next Zach Thompson because you need pitching when Mike Trout is still out there.
My preference is Wetherholt. I think he will be the best all-around player from this class. He’s versatile defensively and plays 2nd, SS, and 3rd. He’s a consistent gap to gap hitter with some pop who loves to steal bases.
With that said…I’d be happy with Smith or Burns…I wouldn’t mind Kurtz. Montgomery has a ton of tools. I don’t want a high school kid as there are none who are the proverbial “can’t miss” prospect (although anyone can fail). HS kids are inherently riskier as well.
To me it comes down to Smith, Burns, Wetherholt, or Kurtz. I’m assuming there is no way Condon, Travis, or Cags drops to 7.
Some thoughts…
1. Edman should take longer than most on his rehab as it’s really spring training for him. He needs to work on his timing and getting into game shape. It’s not as if he’s been out 10 days with a tight hammy.
2. I’d hate to jettison Herrera because he’s a decent RH bat. I like him as a DH, backup catcher, and a future 1st baseman & left fielder. If he can make himself versatile from a defensive standpoint, he would be an extremely valuable commodity in this modern era of baseball.

I do not suffer fools easily. Guilty as charged.

Goal posts keep moving. I said Contreras was the Cards best hitter while Shady countered Burleson was the better and most feared hitter, which of course was ridiculous.
When I proved him wrong with facts/stats he cherry picked a RH pitcher and needing a fly ball to tie. When I proved that Contreras hits righties BETTER than Burly, we came to needing a single.
Heck…let’s do every scenario to determine the best hitter:
We need a grounder to short?
We need a sac bunt?
We need a bunt single?
We need a successful hit & run to the right side?
We need a successful hit and run to the left side?
We need someone to beat out an infield single?
We need to draw a walk?
We need a triple?Exhausting! Could’ve been avoided if Shady just admitted he was wrong and Contreras is the Card’s best and most feared hitter in 2024.
And allow me to add this, Mr Shady…
Having “CLASS” imho involves having the ability to admit when you’re wrong.
You’re the one who needs to man-up and admit you were wrong. That would be the “classy” thing to do!
Contreras vs RH pitcher .893 OPS
Burleson vs RH pitcher .868 OPSFACTS are your friend, Mr Shady.
Any other cherry picking you’d like to attempt? What an idiotic scenario & and I’m an idiot for playing along, but here goes…
I want Contreras up because I’m not just trying to tie the game, I’m trying to win the damn thing!
Contreras has a higher/better OBP, SLG, OPS, OPS+, RC/27, and ISOP.
Contreras is the far superior hitter. Please stop as I fear you’ll only embarrass yourself further.
Note: Gorman & Nado both had their OPS go over .700 today! It’s a good sign and hopefully a sign of better things to come!
Pretty clear the Offense is no longer Offensive. Can’t wait to get Noot & Edman back. They should really lengthen this lineup if the come back and play to their career norms.

I’m not a Burly critic nor was I criticizing him. Simply pointing out that he is not the hitter Contreras is. Not even close. And anyone who thinks he is doesn’t understand baseball.
I didn’t even mention his horrendous defense, you did.
Burly’s best position is DH. He should play first occasionally and the Outfield only in emergency situations. He’s that bad (since you brought it up).
Mr Shady wrote:
“AdM, are you really sure Contreras is ” the team’s best hitter by a wide margin”? Some now feel Burleson is, at least, the Cardinals’ “most feared hitter”, right now.”
1. Yes, I’m really sure.
2. Some people are idiots.^^^^^
Of course he’s streaky.
Point is, will he always be so streaky or is that a product of his youth? Will he mature as a hitter?
Time will tell….
Gorman by Month:
April .634 OPS
May .920 OPS
June .532 OPS
July 1.267It’s just tough to say what Gorman is. When he’s good, he crushes balls like no one on this team. But when he’s bad, he appears helpless.
I think it would be nuts to give up on this kid. He’s only 24. If he figures out a way to become more consistent, we have one of the leading sluggers in baseball.
I urge patience.

Are you referring to the “Merkle Bonehead” play of 1908?
Did you know that at the time Merkle was 19 and the youngest player in the NL?
Contreras .890 OPS 152 OPS+
Burly .780 OPS 119 OPS+Not. Even. Close!
And he’s not the team MVP. That’s either Helsley, Gray, or Winn!
Facts are your friend!
^^^^^
Considering Contreras is the team’s best hitter by a wide margin, I’m not sure why you wouldn’t lump him in with Winn & Burleson rather than Goldy & Nado?
^^^^^
Contreras and his .890 OPS is certainly earning his money and is easily the best hitter on this team. Not sure why you linked him with Goldy & Nado?
If my stats are correct, right-handed hitters have crushed Perez to the tune of an .884 OPS this season.
Time to get DC a start as well as Fermin & Pages. Maybe DC in RF, Contreras at DH, and Fermin at second?
Mr KeepComing…
What is perplexing is that Gorman was so much better last season.
He will always K a lot, but 148 last season wasn’t unreasonable in this era. And his .328 OBP was certainly respectable.
At age 24 I really expected him to take it to another level this season and he has. Unfortunately, he took it the wrong way and his regression is disturbing as well as significant.
But since the talent is there, you can’t give up on the kid yet or else you run the risk of what happened when we gave up too soon on Jose Cruz, Andy Van Slyke, or Randy Arozarena.
Just my two cents…

Agreed. He’s been elite in Left and simply stinging the ball for well over a month now!
Mr Shady…I’m not picking at Burleson, just looking at him objectively. You tend to ignore his flaws.
He doesn’t run well at all.
He’s mediocre at first. He’s horrible in RF.
His season looks good as a Cardinal, but come on. .313 OBP is poor to mediocre. His 24 XBHs is mediocre. Over 50 of his hits have been singles.Nolan Gorman , everyone’s fav whipping boy, has 1 more XBH than Burly even though he has 23 fewer hits! What does that tell you?
I’m not hating on the guy, but a 1.3 WAR over halfway through the season is poor to mediocre.
No doubt, my standards appear to be higher than yours.
