I saw this potential Cardinals lineup proposed. It looks pretty darn good. I’d also consider maybe Donovan at #2, Burly at #7 and Nootbaar at #8. Whatcha’ think?

I would have Contreras #3 since he is our best hitter.
No one asked me, but I’d leave Burleson in the 2 slot for now only because that’s where he’s been placed as of late and he seems to be comfortable there. If he continues to display the sort of power surge that’s led to 4 HR’s so far in June, I’d say you have to move him down in order to possibly afford him more RBI chances.
Shady, the lineup you “saw” has an IsoD of .103 for the season batting 7th, and also a career avg of .105 (IsoD). Nootbaar.
Betts is a career.080 for reference. He’s currently .101 for the season.
Elite plate discipline is very short of supply, and must bat in the top 3 for me, w/that table setter skill.
Carp is a .107 for his career. His may be the stubbornest strike zone in the last 10/15 yrs? In his prime he could put up .130’s and .140’s.
are you good with Burleson at #2?
The answer is yes, because we don’t have any top of the order hitters besides Winn right now. Burleson’s OBP is far too low for a top of order slot. Given his modest power he would be ideal around 6 or 7. But he puts it in play and has a nice BA, so right now, he is the best we’ve got for the 2 slot.
blingboy, I prefer more speed at #2 than Burleson has. However, if Winn’s at 1B after a single or walk, Burly should get some fastballs to hammer. And Burly’s recent power surge makes it nice to have him with a better chance at that 5th AB in the game.
My favorite thing about Burleson is his ability to put the ball in play. That makes him a pretty good stand in up near the top of the order despite the low OBP, in the absence of a true up in the order hitter. Both Donovan and Nootbar have faded pretty significantly, which has really impaired the top of the order.
Contreras had emerged as the best all around hitter when he went down, so I like him 3rd.
Gorman is all or nothing with a lot of strike outs and zero situational hitting ability. With him it is just all about whether he can hit enough home runs to outweigh all the strike outs. Similar to the situation with DeJong and O’Neill. I do not like a .230 hitter batting clean up, but with Goldy and Arenado fading into the sunset and Walker sputtering, we have nothing else.
Beyond the 4th spot, I don’t think the order matters too much. If somebody heats up, put them 5th.
No question that he puts it in play. I’d like to see him be bit more selective. He rarely K’s, but he also rarely walks as witnessed by only 9 BB’s in a little over 200 PA’s which is obviously the reason his OBP suffers. He’s generating some power as of late, so pitchers may tend to be a bit more careful with him. If he can remain patient, he should not only be able to draw more BB’s, but also run counts a little deeper to gain an advantage.
Wynn was none other than the, “Toy Cannon!” At only 5-10 and 160 lbs. he ripped 291 HR’s in his 15 year career. That’s 30 lbs. less than Edman’s listed weight. And in regards to Tommy, I saw a rumor that the Dodgers have designs on him and have propositioned Johnny and the Cardinals regarding an arrangement. No kidding.

Given the Cardinals are most likely going to be lowering payroll next year, and they are looking for an SP5 and a RP according to Mozeliak, maybe they will trade Edman for a couple of AAA pitching prospects at the deadline.
While I’m concerned about his trend towards injuries, Noot is the team’s ideal hitter in the two-hole behind WINN.
First of all, he is a high OBP guy (.349 career). Secondly, in 4 seasons he has never slugged below .400. He also runs well. Again, the ideal guy to hit behind WINN.
So, assuming Noot & Willy-Con are back soon (and that’s a big assumption), here’s my lineup moving forward.

It’s not a great lineup, but it’s the best I can do with the assembled talent.
Batting goldy 3rd and Burleson 7th is something Oli does. And he’s a dumb manager. Goldy hasn’t shown any reason to believe he is coming back to previous production levels. He’s been given ample opportunity. Bat him 7th and if he recovers move him back up.

Goldschmidt’s the team leader in runs scored with 31, but he also leads the team in PA’s with 274 which is 70 more than Burleson. And Goldschmidt’s tied for the team lead with with 25 BB’s. If not for all the walks, his OBP would be too embarrassing to even mention. At any rate, Burleson’s swung the bat better than has Goldschmidt to this point which is easily illustrated by a .448 SLG to Goldschmidt’s .351.
I know BW could have cherry picked to May 12th instead, and dropped a 4 K game off Goldy’s totals, but he stuck by the 11th date. One game of .020 ops pts.

The 9/33 bb/k is not going away for Paul. By months the same ratio is still there and worsening. Adding extra base hits has helped but his K% is right on Gormans heels.Goldy, Gorman and Burly all strike out three times as much as they walk. After Sinai’s 5 to 1 ratio, those three are next.

As for Edman I think it presumptuous to assume he will play at all this year. He may join Middleton on the year long sunk cost list.
Burly has an IsoD of .032 this season, it’s the flip side of Noots .103. That 3 to 1 ratio is confirmed by bb% (13.4 vs 4.4%). 13.4% leads the team.
I like a lefty batting 2nd, especially w/a runner on 1B, but the lefty needs to be able to take walks too. Strictly BA dependent, and BAbip vulnerable, will work with hot batters short term batting second; but give me the plate discipline long term.
