RBK> but that sure was a special lone single! I’m willing to watch Burleson go 0-20 in anticipation of his next roller through the infield! He’s that special.

    1Tough> great point.

Everyone expects every star to hit like Albert. It’s not possible. There’s only one Albert!

Great point. Let’s hope they’re back to playing “Cardinal” baseball.

Gotta believe Scott & Winn have made a difference. Walker is improved. And Gorman is pretty darn good!

    My opinion means nothing.

Bottom line is Burleson is struggling to hit mlb pitchers for the third straight season.

Can he turn it around. I hope he does. It would help my team. But so far he’s essentially Pete Kozma or Pete Bourjos at the dish. And time is running out. He’s 25. It’s his third season. And no one in baseball cares what he hit in Spring Training.

I’ll be honest. He NEEDS to be sent down. He needs to have some sustained success at the plate. Right now he’s lost. Again. Like last season. And the season before.

Burleson is hitting .190 with 2 RBI and 1 XBH on the season.

This is why he WILL be sent down if/when others are healthy. It will be a remarkably easy decision.

Herrera making a continued case for regular playing time either at catcher or as a DH. Seems like the time is now for this kid.

How many seasons of failure do you need to see before you admit you and your RedSox Scout were wrong about Burleson?

He can’t hit. He has absolutely no value at this point.

In three seasons this is what we’ve gotten.

30 HR a year, 100 RBI a year, 2 Gold Gloves, and 2 Platinum Gloves for the leagues best fielder.

Last season was a down year and he still hit 26 HR with 93 RBI. 54 XBH.

I’m not worried about him. He’s always been somewhat streaky. He’s still one of the top third basemen in baseball. I’m more concerned about the young players who aren’t hitting a lick!

I’ll say this and I hope you pay attention.

Dozens upon dozens of outfielders have had seasons of 40 or more homers. Only 5 second basemen. None were left-handed.

Now to your question. After his age 23 season, Gorman had 41 career HR.
After his age 23 season, O’Neill had 9 HR.

I’m sorry and this is not personal, but your comparison is ludicrous. Might as well compare Gorman to Ozzie Smith or Bob Gibson.

Gorman is an unique player. O’Neill is always hurt and is a dime a dozen type of guy.

No. Terrible comparison. O’Neil is an outfielder and his skill-set is not terribly unique for an mlb outfielder.

Gorman is a lefty-hitting second baseman who hit 27 HR in only 406 ABs at age 23.

His skill-set is incredibly unique and like many power hitters, he can run hot & cold. He’s not particularly hot to start the season, but if he remains healthy, 40 HR is not out of the question.

Neither Prieto nor Saggese have the potential to hit 40+ HR from the left side at second. Gorman is 23 and it will take a remarkable player to make his unique skill-set “expendable”.

No. If Player A has been really bad for two seasons and then starts the season off poorly, it’s fair to wonder if said player is simply a bad player.

But to take any player, pick out one game, and believe teams will either upgrade or degrade their rating/evaluation of the player based upon one game, well, that’s is a bit of a stretch and a totally different scenario.

Mr Shade, do you really think one game, in a 162 game season, is going to increase or decrease a player’s trade value? That seems to be a bit of a stretch, but of course, you’re entitled to your opinion.

Per Shady/ feel it’s fair to mention that the team, collectively, is off to a slow start offensively. Why nitpick?

To be fair, the thread you created is about Burleson and mentions him in the title. It’s not about a group of players but rather one, specific individual. I’m not sure one offering an opinion regarding this one, specific player is nitpicking?

I’m thinking/hoping the Cards jump all over Yama today and score 8 runs. Criticize Goldy, Gorman, Nado all you want, but it’s my hunch Yama may struggle against these type of hitters initially in his MLB career.

Will it be enough? Remains to be seen!

To me it’s all about player development.

For many years now our Cards have been great at developing decent players like Edman or Donovan.

But they’re not developing Star players. And they’re obviously not recognizing who they’re future stars are.

Cardinals, to be competitive again, desperately need guys like Winn, Walker, and Scott to become All Star caliber players. Add a Hence, Thompson, Libby, or Hjerpe to the list as well! And, they have to stop trading guys like Gallen, Arozarena, and Garcia.

Player development! Name of the game!

Mr Bling you are absolutely correct! Two games of a 162 schedule is essentially meaningless.

My only point is that this is Burleson’s third season with the team and we’re still waiting on him to perform. His two-game slump is meaningless in a vacuum , however one could also say it’s simply the continuation of an underperforming, disappointing young player.

I don’t know what to think. I had hopes that he would become the next Lance Berkman type of hitter. I’m starting to fear he’s the next Peter Bourjos with a bat in his hand.

Well Mr Bling, the difference is Nado has a long track record of success which Burleson does not.

I believe Nado has averaged about 30 HR with 100 rbi in three seasons here to go along with his magnificent defense.

With all due respect, it’s a poor comparison.

Mr Shady I’m not sure how to categorize a career .237 BA, .670 OPS, and 83 OPS+ apparently?

    Stupendous? Miraculous? Amazing? Magnificent?

No, I’m pretty sure “failure” is the correct word to date to describe the Alec Burleson era in St Louis.

I’m hoping he turns it around. Can’t have a DH who can’t hit in the lineup.

I’m on vacation with the fam and missed the game.

I don’t expect us to be competitive with the Dodgers. They’re actually trying to win.

I love how everyone freaked out, myself included, with Goldy’s poor spring only to see him morph into the future Hall of Famer he is once the games actually counted.

Men, allow me to “bottom-line” this Alec Burleson thread.

We all love Burleson’s hitting potential. We were aroused by his AAA performance. Encouraged by his Spring Training dominance.

But, now the games are for real and he has to produce. He’s a slow and poor base runner and a defensive liability. So, he HAS to hit. So far in his MLB career he’s been a failure. Time for him to put up or shut up.

I’ve previously been high on Burleson and am still hoping for the best, but I learned a long time ago that it’s prudent not to read too much into ST performances.

I’d add, to date he’s been helpless against lefty pitching, he’s still slow, and still a poor fielder.

Let’s just say, the jury is definitely still out on AB as a productive MLB player.

    Here’s what I don’t know.

If Herrera is in the game as a DH and Contreras gets injured, can Herrera then switch to catcher during the game?

Thanks to anyone who knows the answer to this.
