I think. To my eyes that. Mark Whitten was the greatest slugger ever. Remember that 4 homer, “game”, against the Yankees I think it was and as I remember.

Greater than Babe. Or Bonds or Aaron. At least to me. 4 homers in one game. No one can do that. As I remember it.

Allow me to bottom line this sucker.

In 42 trips to the dish this season, the Red Hot Burleson has 2 XBH, 2 runs scored, and 2 RBI.

How can Oli keep that kind of production out of the lineup?

No, he wasn’t hitting well. He’s never hit well. Once again, I’ll post his woeful career slash line, but you’ll probably keep pretending he’s something he’s not:

    .238-.295-.367-.662 81

Mr Shady you’re either a deliberate contrarian or completely delusional. The above slash line encapsulates 403 career ABs.

He is what he is. A slow, singles hitting, poor fielder who doesn’t hit for average or power, nor does he walk much.

At this point he has no business being on an mlb team.

Winn is 22. He’s swinging a legit hot bat. Why keep him out?

    This move is inexplicable!

Burleson has had a job the past two seasons due to the ridiculous amount of OF injuries. As guys like Noot, DC, and Edman return, Burleson will find him either on the bench or in Memphis.

I’d send him to Memphis so that he can work on hitting with some power. Fat, slow, single hitters aren’t much use to teams.

Mr Shady, with all due respect, you should probably slow your roll with your praise of how well Burleson is hitting lately.

I know you have a disdain for facts & statistics, but, here’s where your Burleson stands as of today:

    .256/.293/.308/.600 67

These are the numbers of a bad hitter. A bad hitter with absolutely no power. Keep in mind, a league average hitter has an OPS+ of 100. Burleson isn’t even close to league average.

Can he turn it around and have a good season? Maybe. Let’s hope so.

But come on man, let’s not pretend he’s been Willie, Mickey, and The Duke.

Girsch is the Loch Ness Monster!

Plenty of stories of his existence, but very little evidence.

Is he real or just a myth?

Of course, we’re rooting for success. He’s a Cardinal! That’s not disputable. My team is better if all the young players have success.

However, we’re not blind homers. If a guy stinks, he stinks. We don’t like it, but we can’t pretend a pile of poop is Grandma’s Apple Pie. It doesn’t work that way.

    They’re not OUR stats.
    They’re Burleson’s stats.
    His numbers are his numbers.

We’re all rooting for him to succeed! We’d all love it if he became half the hitter you seem to think he is. But neither you nor Burleson can run away from his dismal record of hitting! He is what the numbers say he is, good or bad, same as every other player in MLB.

It’s certainly not personal. It’s just that he hits like Dal Maxvill, runs like Yadi Molina, and plays defense like Chris Duncan. Not good!

There is no doubt in my mind that Burleson is the best .179 hitter in MLB! Might be too soon for work to begin on his HOF Bust, but I’m good with measuring him for his Red Jacket.

What are we looking at when Noot gets back?

Does Noot take over in Center?
Does Scott keep playing and Noot plays left? With Donnie Baseball at DH?
Does the light-hitting, fast running Siani get sent down? Or do we send down the light-hitting, slow running Burleson?

    What does Mo do?
    What would you do?

Mr Shady. Are you simply incapable of admitting you were wrong about Burleson?

It’s not so hard. The truth will set you free!

Mr Shady, Edmonds and all other Cardinal broadcasters are essentially paid to sell the Cardinals to the local populace.

Now to your question. You’re supposed to be able to look at his numbers and figure out for yourself if he’s a good hitter or not. I didn’t need a Cardinal announcer to know if Albert Pujols could hit. I didn’t need an announcer to know that Luis Melendez couldn’t hit. I don’t need an announcer to know that Vic Scott is fast.

To date and it could always change, AB is an epic failure at the mlb level.

    I’m sorry, but I don’t see the value. I’m trying, but I don’t.

    He can’t run.

    He’s extremely limited defensively.

He’s hitting .200 with 4 singles and 1 double. No power! Career OPS+ of 80.

So please explain to this Neanderthal where his value is because I don’t see it.

Oh, and while you’re at it, please explain why you say he’s a “really good fastball hitter”? Please use some stats, facts, or data to back up your claim.

    Than you in advance!

    I love me some Burleson!

Doesn’t every team need a slow, singles hitting, .200 hitter for a DH?

I have a feeling the Alec Burleson era will be coming to a swift close soon.

Looks like we have Sutter covered. Brian can you explain why Medwick isn’t on the wall? 10 or 11 seasons as a Card. WS Champion. MVP. Triple Crown. 64 doubles in a single season.

Guy should’ve been one of the first players on the outfield wall!

As an aside, in 1984 Sutter pitched 122.2 innings (with 45 saves).

Last season the Cards had one (1) pitcher throw that many innings. Just one. In 2022 the Cards had three.

I would never begrudge Sutter his HOF accolades because he was not only a pioneer, not only a dominant player during his time, but he likely had a much longer career stolen due to overuse.

Baseball is constantly evolving and I think it’s always important to look at a player in the era in which he played.

RBK – Well, he did win a Cy Young with the Cubs and he was a great Cub.

However, arguably his best season was 1984 with The Cards. He had a career high 45 Saves and pitched a career high 122.2 innings.

He was probably better than most remember. Today, a closer might pitch 60 or 70 innings. Maybe less. Sutter regularly pitched 100 innings out of the pen and many of those innings he came into the game with runners on base.

If during his heyday he was used like a closer is today, he might have 70 or 80 saves a season.

Closer then was nothing like closer now.

Bruce would be brought into games during the 7th or 8th inning, bases loaded, no out and be expected to get the final 5, 6, 7, 8 outs.

Sutter rarely started the 9th needing 3 outs with no one on base. Different game then.

No doubt Herrera has turned a corner. He had an excellent year at AAA and followed it up with an excellent Winter Ball campaign.

    Nice call!

Agree, Scott needs AAA at-bats. He’s close, but pretty apparent he’s not ready yet.

Agree, Oli loves him some Alec Burleson. But, this is the big leagues and you have to produce. Period. In three big league seasons, Burleson has failed to produce. Period.

This has the makings of a good team IF they could get healthy. I’m looking forward to the return of Noot, DC, and Edman.

I don’t know, but I’m going to guess the Cards keep Burleson & his .190 bat in the lineup due to injuries to:

    Edman
    Carlson
    Noot
    Carpenter
    Donovan
    Contreras

But again, I could be wrong and maybe Oli just loves .190 singles hitters?

What are your thoughts, Mr Shady?

When Noot comes back, do Cards send Siani or AB down? Possibly Scott?

I’m old school. I’d hate to sacrifice elite defense for a .190 hitter. But what do I know?

Bryce Rainer. 18, high schooler, SS & Pitcher. Tremendous upside. Has played some third. I could see Cards taking him and he’s our third baseman post-Nado.

    I think he’s a big kid at 6’3″ & 195.

Of course, I’m on the Hagen Smith bandwagon, but he’s pitched hi
Self into the top 5 I would guess.
