Serious question for all….CAN GORMAN BE SENT TO MEMPHIS? I cannot even watch the guy anymore as a player in this lineup that cannot hit as well. K machine and has to be the biggest disappointment of the year.
June 30, 2024 at 3:59 pm #258434I proposed optioning Gorman some time back. The idea did not get any traction.
It is true he cannot hit, but he has never been able to hit. It is just a question of how many mistakes he sees. I think opponents have adopted a strategy of erring out of the zone rather than letting it come in his wheelhouse because he commits very early. It’s how he puts such a hurt on it when he connects, but also why he misses by a foot so often.
June 30, 2024 at 4:06 pm #258436He is currently our version of Dave Kingman or Joey Gallo. He can make a living that way but should not to be counted on as a middle of the order bat. Hitting 7th or 8th is the best we can expect.
June 30, 2024 at 4:42 pm #258438The organization has plenty of options at 2B. Especially, when Edman returns. What good is it for Gorman and the team to keep him in the lineup the way he’s struggling? He needs to go to Memphis to try to regroup. Bring Prieto up to see if he can hit MLB pitching like he has in the minors. Prieto kind of reminds me of Burleson as a hitter. Also, Gorman’s trade value is “falling off the cliff”. Just like O’Neill’s did and Carlson’s has. Another reason to send him down to try to “get it together”. Let him there until the All-Star break, at least. Then re-evaluate the 2B situation. Including Edman as a possibility at 2B the way Siani is playing CF.
June 30, 2024 at 4:43 pm #258439Yes (can be optioned down)
If that is the goal, Noot for Gorman, and you know the rest, about LF & 2B.
June 30, 2024 at 5:59 pm #258449I don’t think it will happen. They already have Walker there trying to learn how to hit. It would be too much of a public indictment to send another drooled upon middle of the order hitter down. They produce hitters who can’t hit and pitchers who can’t pitch. They produce outfielders who can’t field and catchers who can’t catch.
June 30, 2024 at 6:11 pm #258450Just think – a couple of years ago we could have had Juan Soto for Gorman and Walker. I wonder if the Yankees would take that offer now?..:)
June 30, 2024 at 7:11 pm #258460Haha!…”They produce catchers that can’t catch.” What’s even worse is that they had 19 years to find one that could!
June 30, 2024 at 9:30 pm #258476Isn’t that the truth TD. It is unfathomable that for some years they were considering Herrara the catcher of the future, and he doesn’t have the arm necessary to even play the position. What in the world were they looking at? They aren’t developing players for the home run derby. They aren’t playing fantasy baseball. It’s is if they didn’t understand how the game works and what is indispensable in an everyday catcher.
And now, having invested $85 million in Contreras, with the understanding he will not be behind the plate a substantial amount of games, Herrera isn’t even suitable as the backup. Good grief.
And I have heard it said he will hit the gym and get better at throwing this winter. Absolute twaddle. He has been a professional catcher for 8 years. Are you telling me no one noticed he can’t throw and tried to fix it already?
If they liked his bat they needed to see if he could play a position, 2B or LF probably, and if so, then see if the bat develops. Instead, they pursued a path where success was not a possible outcome due to lack of enough arm to play the position. Its astounding.
June 30, 2024 at 10:28 pm #258479Jose Fermin can play 2B, and he bats RH, and he’s already on the active roster. I’d just as soon see Fermin play regularly if Gorman needs to go down to Memphis and get straightened out.
June 30, 2024 at 10:45 pm #258481Yeah, the gym idea is amusing. I’m pretty sure any Big League baserunner could run all day on Jack LaLane or Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Fermin is not a good player. If we have Nootbaar back in LF, Donovan can slide into 2B and the lineup is still solid (nothing can be done about Arenado and Goldschmidt)
July 1, 2024 at 2:03 pm #258515Just think – a couple of years ago we could have had Juan Soto for Gorman and Walker. I wonder if the Yankees would take that offer now?..:)
But we can’t leave the part out about Soto making $31M this year and projected to sign a long term contract this winter for north of $400M. Bill DeWitt might have something to say bout that.
July 1, 2024 at 2:13 pm #258516I’ve heard multiple different versions of that supposed trade, many including Carlson and others. Does anyone really know what was offered, and more importantly, what the Nats would have accepted?
For the record, the Nats got six players from the Padres for Soto (plus Josh Bell), not two. Five were highly rated young talents, plus Luke Voit. But if the Cards were offering just two players, I can understand why they were reportedly not among the top two finalists to get Soto.
July 1, 2024 at 4:02 pm #258527A guy on the next barstool once speculated that Mo must have intended to submit a losing offer for Soto. He got to check the trying box without the need for his boss to open the vault. I can imagine the tactic having been used more than once.
July 1, 2024 at 5:47 pm #258534It is tough to watch Gorman. The kid is still only 24 though and has incredible power, especially given that he can play middle infield. Would like to see him work on making contact more and let the power take care of iteself. But he K’d a lot in the minors as well.
I would give him time, and maybe a return to Memphis is in order when Noot and possibly Edman are activated.
Have no idea what we offered for Soto, and while he would look good right now we would not have been able to keep him. Thus I don’t regret not acquiring him.
July 1, 2024 at 7:02 pm #258538I hate the idea of sending Gorman down, but the way he’s now struggling, I guess it may be worth a shot.
IF they were to send him down I think Dunn deserves a shot as he’s been our best Memphis hitter all season. Better than Fermin, Prieto, and Saggese by a wide margin and he does play second (as well as third).
July 1, 2024 at 7:14 pm #258540I see where Walker is currently hitting .255 with 4 homeruns down in Memphis.
July 1, 2024 at 7:40 pm #258541If Gorman goes down, I think they will move Donovan to 2B and bring up Walker.
That is assuming Noot has already returned, Gormin has gone down, and Noot is in RF with Burleson mostly DH. That would make it Noot and Walker flanking Siani, with Burleson and Carlson backing them. That only leaves Carp and Crawford as backup infielders, which is concerning, but is a foreseeable consequence of signing Crawford and Carp, so I think they are prepared to do it.
July 1, 2024 at 8:41 pm #258549Mudville, Fermin may hit Rh but he has a serious reverse split

No, that is not true.
Memphis 2024: OPS/wRC+
Fermin (age 25): 1.076/177
Dunn (age 27): .962/145Fermin also has a considerably higher walk rate and lower strikeout rate than Dunn.
July 1, 2024 at 9:06 pm #258553On the other hand, Dunn has been hitting very well for a couple seasons and Firmin is a half season wonder.
July 1, 2024 at 9:12 pm #258555I directly responded to the comment made. You can move the goalposts when you don’t like the facts, but so what? Dunn played at Double-A for three seasons, so yes, he got better each year.
This Dunn discussion is in a loop. Same comments over and over. Now Dunn is taking over a Gorman thread, too. All we need to make it complete is a touch of Burly…
P.S. Again, I don’t see either Dunn or Fermin as a difference maker for the St. Louis Cardinals. And both will be in Memphis very soon. But I can’t let obvious misstatements pass.
July 1, 2024 at 9:17 pm #258556When the Cardinals got Saggese from the Rangers I was led to believe that he was a real good player. Has he not performed well at AAA in Memphis?

Nick Dunn: .349/.397/.560/.957
Jose Fermin: .346/.461/.615/1.076Who has hit better at Memphis?
