1td, 22 year-old Saggese had three hits tonite. One, a triple off the top of the wall. Maybe he’s starting to “come into it”.

ParticipantWhen the Cardinals got Saggese from the Rangers I was led to believe that he was a real good player. Has he not performed well at AAA in Memphis?
63 wRC+ in 360 PAs at Memphis thus far.
July 2, 2024 at 7:20 am #258564Mr Walton & LACardFan…
The devil is in the details.
Note: I stated Dunn was the better hitter in Memphis “ALL” season. Fermin has not been in Memphis ALL season has , has he?
July 2, 2024 at 7:49 am #258568Talk about cherry picking. Weak sauce, AdM.
July 2, 2024 at 8:46 am #258571^^^^^
But it would hold up in court.
July 2, 2024 at 8:58 am #258572It would get laughed out of court.
July 2, 2024 at 2:16 pm #258603What does Statcast say about Gormans pitch types and chase rates? The now problem, if monthly splits are available.
July 2, 2024 at 6:43 pm #258620Nolan Gorman, future HOFer! Lol!
July 2, 2024 at 9:07 pm #2586521td, Sagesse keeps racking up the hits. 5 for 6, recently. Hope he is realizing his potential. 22 years old at AAA. He could be a good one.
July 2, 2024 at 9:34 pm #258654After a shade over 360 PA’s in 84 games at Memphis I’m seeing a substantial downturn in the jump to AAA, but I guess that’s expected, and at only 22 he’s got time to figure it out. He placed some really nice numbers on the board at AA and I’m guessing he comes with a nice mitt ater seeing he plays both middle IF positions as well as 3B.
July 2, 2024 at 10:15 pm #2586551td, this evening for AAA Memphis. “Thomas Saggese ~ 4-5, HR, 3 Singles, 3 RBI….. WALK OFF 3 Run HR….” courtesy of craviduce on another MB. Maybe that will “brighten your spirits” on the young Saggese. lol
July 4, 2024 at 5:08 am #258843I wonder if Pujols could come “coach” Gorman for a few games. He always seemed to have a positive effect on hitters on the team.
July 4, 2024 at 7:00 am #258844It boils down to this. Do we really want a player like Gorman? He’s always going to strike out a lot. He’s always going to hit a lot of homeruns. He’s always going to have a low obp and batting average. He is always going to have plenty of rbi’s. Unfortunately, the failure of Goldy and Arenado to produce magnify the downside of this type of player. I’m not ever expecting him to be our middle of the order guy. But I’m not bailing on him yet either. We need to clean up the rest of the lineup around him. Otherwise, we need to move on to a player with the opposite skill set.
July 4, 2024 at 7:34 am #258847Shady, I am going to try again to make a point that you have ignored when made by others.
Saggese has been hot in July. That is THREE DAYS now.
Here are his OPS numbers for the last THREE MONTHS. MONTHS. MONTHS.
April .740
May .676
June .595The trend is bad. The results are bad. He has a long way to go to reach his potential. We will have to see if this is the start of a rebound. But turning his first few few hot days at Triple-A into a starting MLB job is not realistic.
July 4, 2024 at 8:01 am #258851I doubt Albert could do anything in a few days for a batter who is carrying a 37% K rate over 300+ PAs this year.
Hopefully Gorman will hook up with something this winter that will help him.
July 4, 2024 at 8:12 am #258852We need to clean up the rest of the lineup around him.
At the least, I think this is painting with too broad a brush.
OPS+ season to date.
Contreras 155
Burleson 119
Winn 115
Donovan 112
Nootbar 111
Herrera 105
Arenado 93
Carpenter 91
Goldschmidt 89
Gorman 88
Siani 62At the least, it is not “the lineup around him”, rather it is certain individuals that need cleaning up. But I suggest that you are pointing a finger in the wrong direction.
July 4, 2024 at 8:43 am #258853So where else should I be pointing it? Your stats are not applicable. Contreras Noot and Herrera are 3 of your 6 guys with an ops+ over 100. They have all been on the IL for extensive lengths or Herrera whose defense is so sub standard we have to play Pages. So you like Carp and fat Crawford at dh? We are 26 out of 30 in runs scored. I pointed out Goldy and Arenado suck. An Ops+ of 150 is great. Contreras will not maintain that number and he was hurt Guaranteed. 125 is above average. 100 is average. So Burleson, Winn, and Donovan are the only guys who have actually played for extended periods who have an average ops plus or better.
Thanks for making my point for me Bling. In order to carry a player like Gorman, you have to have a way better lineup than what we have been throwing out there.July 4, 2024 at 9:04 am #258860Mr KeepComing…
What is perplexing is that Gorman was so much better last season.
He will always K a lot, but 148 last season wasn’t unreasonable in this era. And his .328 OBP was certainly respectable.
At age 24 I really expected him to take it to another level this season and he has. Unfortunately, he took it the wrong way and his regression is disturbing as well as significant.
But since the talent is there, you can’t give up on the kid yet or else you run the risk of what happened when we gave up too soon on Jose Cruz, Andy Van Slyke, or Randy Arozarena.
Just my two cents…
July 4, 2024 at 9:12 am #258864‘^^^^^
Your 2 cents are worth more like a dollar. We can’t give up on him yet. His downside is magnified by the performance and injuries of the current roster.July 4, 2024 at 9:53 am #258869This team and the absolute horror of the with RISP.
July 4, 2024 at 1:15 pm #258909Otherwise, we need to move on to a player with the opposite skill set.
We have a guy on our team with the opposite skill set who can play 2B. His name is Brendan Donovan. The fact that has been forced to be our regular LF most of the year speaks volumes about the state of our OF. Donnie should be the starting 2B while Gorman can be DH or traded.
July 4, 2024 at 3:28 pm #258986They way way both Arenado and Gorman have been struggling recently. Mo picking up both Saggese and Prieto might turn out to be very good insurance for the infield.
July 4, 2024 at 5:32 pm #259007Gscott-It almost reaches the point where this discussion belongs in the what’s it going to take to fix the Cardinals thread. I’m not stubborn about this player. He may not be a fit for this lineup. But I would like to see this lineup fixed before we move on from him.
July 4, 2024 at 5:50 pm #259008You fix a lineup by trying to replace a hitter with below average OPS. You don’t fix it by building around him. I know it is just half a season, but Gorman has over 1,000 career PAs and an OPS+ of 105, which sucks for an impact hitter. He ties into a mistake with a big boom and people get all googly eyed. His talent is hitting mistakes, which are few and far between in MLB. That is all he can do. How many PAs does it take?
July 4, 2024 at 6:33 pm #259013Short answer Bling-more. He’s only 24 yrs old. He leads the team in homeruns and is 1 off the lead in rbi. I’m truly sorry his other metrics aren’t better. If you want to remove players with below average ops, as you say, than you need to get rid of all of them besides Winn Donny Burly and Contreras.
